Abstract

The article reports on the spread of the West Nile Virus (WNV) through organ transplantation and blood transfusion in Louisiana in 2008. An investigation by the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) found that two WNV infection cases were caused by transfusion while another was infected via organ donation. It is suggested that blood centers utilize the most sensitive screening criteria to detect the virus in order to prevent transmission.
