Legionellosis has been a mandatory weekly reportable disease in Madrid, Spain since 1997. The aim of this study was to know the trend of cases notified during 1998-2003 and to determine the epidemiological characteristics of the last year. The information source was the compulsory report of illness surveillance system. The number of cases and incidence rates observed from 1998 to 2003 were: 16 and 0.31 in 1998, 33 and 0.67 in 1999, 42 and 0.84 in 2000, 53 and 1.09 in 2001, 135 and 2.47 in 2002 and 83 and 1.50 in 2003. The main symptoms were fever in 62 cases, respiratory symptoms in 56 cases, neurological symptoms in 20 cases, and vomiting and diarrhea in 15 cases.
