Sea-level reconstructions based on foraminiferal assemblage data are common for temperate salt-marsh settings. In comparison, the widespread mangrove swamps of equatorial to subtropical settings have received considerably less attention due to enhanced taphonomic loss of specimens, extensive bioturbation, abundant infaunal foraminifera and irregular intertidal topography. The tropics, however, provide the best possible estimate of “eustatic function” and thus are important for testing earth-ice models. In this paper, we use foraminiferal data, in a chronologic framework provided by optically stimulated luminescence, radiocarbon and Pb-210 age estimates, to determine coastal evolution and rates of sea-level rise in the Setiu wetland of northeastern peninsular Malaysia on the western margin of the southern South China Sea over the past ca. 200 years. Foraminiferal data from three surface transects across fringing mangrove swamps were used to interpret four cores from mid to high mangrove swamp settings. Patterns of foraminiferal distribution were determined by correspondence analysis, canonical correspondence analysis and detrended canonical correspondence analysis of dead assemblage data. We used weighted averaging as the transfer function model to reconstruct sea-level curves for the cores and to provide a composite reconstruction for the last ca. 200 years. Based on one C-14 estimate, sea level rose during the 19th century at 1.26 mm yr − 1 . The rate increased to 3.2 ± 0.6 mm yr − 1 .around 1900 CE, roughly coincident with rate increases recorded globally. However, the 20th century rate in the Setiu wetland is considerably greater than that of global estimates (ca. 1.8 mm yr − 1 ) for this period. Rates of sea-level rise in the Gulf of Thailand (immediately to the north of the Setiu wetland) determined from GPS-corrected tide gauge data and multi-satellite altimetry are geographically variable but also greater than the global rate. The data from the Setiu wetland provide the first foraminifera-based sea-level reconstruction of the past few hundred years from the southeastern South China Sea (SCS) and they represent the first time the early 20th century increase in rate of sea-level rise has been identified using proxy foraminiferal data in an equatorial setting. Sedimentological, geomorphic, and ground penetrating radar (GPR) data are combined with optically stimulated luminescence data to define the Holocene evolution of a coastal system in peninsular Malaysia. The Setiu coastal region of northeast Malaysia comprises five geological and geomorphic units representing distinct evolutionary phases of this coastline. Estimated marine limiting point elevations indicate deposition of an early aggradational shoreline associated with a sea-level elevation of -0.1 to +1.7 m (MSL datum) between ∼6.8 ka and 5.7 ka, in agreement with previous sea-level studies from the Malay-Thai peninsula. A hiatus occurs in the record between ∼5.7 ka and 3.0 ka, possibly due to a relative sea-level oscillation and shoreline erosion. Long-term relative sea-level fall and possible still-stands created strandplains that are interrupted by aggradational to transgressive paleo-barrier and estuary formation corresponding with brief episodes of RSL rise. Analyses of GPR facies and OSL ages suggest annual clinoform deposition, with geometries dictated by variations in ENSO. These data demonstrate the utility of high resolution studies of coastal facies as useful proxy indicators for paleoclimate studies at subdecadal to millennial time-scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The history of Holocene sedimentation on the Sunda Shelf (southern South China Sea), one of the largest shelves in the world, has received little attention, particularly off Peninsular Malaysia. We present here evidence of Holocene transgression from most of the inner shelf of Peninsular Malaysia, based on lithologic and foraminiferal analyses of 24 cores from 13.5 m to 46.8 m water depth encompassing the coastal sand wedge and the immediately adjacent shelf. Six benthic foraminifera biofacies occur within these cores and, together with lithologic data and five AMS radiocarbon age estimates, enable recognition of three units previously defined in cores taken from 52 m to 77 m water depth. Eleven of 24 cores contain Unit 3, earliest Holocene coastal plain semi-consolidated peaty, sandy clay deposits that represent the lowest part of the post-last glacial maximum transgressive systems tract (TST). In a single core, Unit 4 open marine, inner shelf sandy mud deposits of the early Holocene upper part of the TST overlie Unit 3. In 23 cores Unit 3 is directly overlain by Unit 5, open marine, inner shelf sandy mud deposits of the highstand systems tract (HST) and laterally equivalent sediments within the coastal sand wedge that accumulated after the mid-Holocene sea-level maximum. The alternating submergence and subaerial exposure of the low-gradient, shallow Sunda Shelf of southeast Asia during Quaternary interglacial-glacial cycles played an important role in ocean circulation and monsoonal climate through the interchange of Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean waters. The Quaternary stratigraphic development of this margin is, however, poorly understood. This study uses a multi-proxy approach (AMS radiocarbon, bulk sediment magnetic susceptibility, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, and foraminiferal assemblage data) to characterize environmental change and late Pleistocene to Holocene sequence stratigraphic architecture in 16 cores from the northern Sunda Shelf off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Five chronostratigraphic units are recognized. Unit 1 is an inner shelf deposit dating from a late Pleistocene sea-level highstand (the highstand systems tract of the pre-LGM base-level cycle). Units 2–4 represent different paleoenvironmenal components of the transgressive systems tract (TST) of the most recent base-level cycle. Unit 2 is a late Pleistocene shallow open embayment deposit that formed during the post-LGM inundation of the paleo-Chao Phraya River valley as sea level rose. Unit 3 is composed of late Pleistocene to early Holocene paralic peat and organic-rich mud and is capped by a transgressive ravinement surface. Unit 4 is a shallow shelf unit deposited during the early Holocene transgression on the Sunda Shelf prior to ca. 6500 cal yr BP (the onset of the regional Holocene sea-level highstand). Unit 5 represents the mid-Holocene to recent highstand systems tract (HST) deposited from ca. 6500 cal yr BP to present. The incised paleovalleys of the paleo-Chao Phraya River and its tributaries provide more accommodation space for sediment accumulation than the surrounding shelf. However, the thinness of the Holocene sedimentary record, 2–3 m in the incised valleys compared to <1 m over the adjacent shelf, indicates that the LGM incised valleys were almost filled by fluvial and coastal plain sediments before open marine conditions returned near the beginning of the Holocene. The multi-proxy approach of this study elucidates the geologic response of this shelf to sea-level rise and the sequence stratigraphic development of tropical, siliciclastic-dominated shallow shelf depositional sequences. • Sixteen cores were collected from the northern Sunda shelf off Peninsular Malaysia. • Late Quaternary paleoenvironments were interpreted from multi-proxy data. • Four post-last glacial maximum (LGM) chronostratigraphic unit were defined. • LGM incised valleys were almost filled prior to post-LGM transgression. • 2–3 m of Holocene sediments occur in incised valleys, <1 m over the adjacent shelf.
