It is unclear how objective risk factors influence the factors associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk perception. The goals of this study were to investigate factors associated with perceived risk of CRC and to explore how these relationships were modified by personal history of polyps or family history of CRC. The study involved a mailed questionnaire completed by 1646 men and women aged 50-75 years, which assessed perceived risk, demographic and health history variables and CRC worry. Participants were patients of primary care providers in a community medical group in central Massachusetts. The study sample seemed to have a generally accurate perception of CRC risk, which was appropriately increased in the presence of known risk factors. In multivariable analyses that controlled for all measured covariates, financial situation modified the association between perceived risk and a personal history of polyps, while age and insurance status modified the association between perceived risk and family history of CRC. CRC worry, self-reported health, personal history of other cancer and compliance with screening guidelines remained significant predictors of perceived risk. Potential interactions between objective risk factors and socioeconomic characteristics should be further explored in longitudinal studies. (Contains 2 tables.)

Family‐centred interventions addressing sociocultural and emotional stressors promise to prevent mental health problems among refugees in the United States. Peer‐led strategies are highly valued, as they engage communities and promote the sustainability of interventions. We assessed the effects of a peer‐led family‐centred Social and Emotional Well‐being (SEW) intervention on preventive (coping, social networking and conflict resolution) and mental health outcomes (stress, anxiety and depression) among resettled Bhutanese adults in Massachusetts. We conducted a SEW intervention with a pre‐intervention versus post‐intervention (7‐day) and follow‐up (3‐month) evaluation among 103 adults (50 families). The SEW is a culturally tailored 5‐weekly session program that included health education, problem‐solving and mind–body exercises to increase knowledge and skills regarding stress management and conflict resolution. We measured anxiety and depression using the Hopkins Symptom Checklist‐25 and stress using Cohen Perceived Stress scales. Health‐promoting behaviours were measured using validated scales. We used paired t‐tests for continuous and McNemar tests for categorical variables. Mean scores significantly decreased from pre‐intervention to post‐intervention and follow‐up for stress by 15% and 13.9%, anxiety by 20.9% and 25.1% and depression by 18.7% and 20.4% (all p's < 0.01). Mean scores increased from pre‐intervention to post‐intervention and follow‐up for coping by 10% and 17.2%, and for community networking by 28% and 36.8% (all p's < 0.01). Generalised estimating equations showed a significant reduction in stress, anxiety, depression and improved coping, self‐efficacy, family and community networking scored from baseline to follow‐ups (all p's < 0.01). Preventative behavioral interventions aimed at reducing mental problems among refugees are limited. We assessed the effect of a Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEW) intervention on health-promoting behaviors (coping, social-networking, and conflict-resolution) and health-outcomes (stress, anxiety, and depression) among resettled Bhutanese adults in Western Massachusetts. The study was a community-based SEW intervention with pre-posttest evaluation among 44 Bhutanese adults in Western Massachusetts. The SEW is a culturally tailored 5-week, once-weekly health-education, problem solving, and mind-body exercise program to promote stress management skills. We used validated scales to measure outcomes. Mean scores of mental problems decreased by 5.9 for depression, 9.0 for anxiety, and 5.0 for stress post-intervention (p < 0.01). Mean scores increased by 27.3 for coping, 10.6 for social support, and 20.4 for conflict-resolution. Mean social-network scores increased by 4.6 for family, 4.7 for friends, and 1.8 for community networks (p < 0.01). Objective: To determine which established diet quality indices best predict weight-related outcomes in young women.Design: In this cross-sectional analysis, we collected dietary information using the Harvard FFQ and measured body fat percentage (BF%) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. We used FFQ data to derive five diet quality indices: Recommended Food Score (RFS), Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015), Alternate Healthy Eating Index 2010 (AHEI-2010), alternate Mediterranean Diet Score (aMED) and Healthy Plant-Based Diet Index (HPDI).Setting: University of Massachusetts at Amherst.Participants: Two hundred sixty healthy women aged 18-30 years.Results: The AHEI-2010 and HPDI were associated with BMI and BF%, such that a ten-point increase in either diet score was associated with a 1·2 percentage-point lower BF% and a 0·5 kg/m2 lower BMI (P < 0·05). Odds of excess body fat (i.e. BF% > 32 %) were 50 % lower for those in the highest v. lowest tertile of the AHEI-2010 (P = 0·04). Neither the RFS nor HEI-2015 was associated with BMI or BF%; the aMED was associated with BMI but not BF%.Conclusions: These results suggest that diet quality tends to be inversely associated with BMI and BF% in young women, but that this association is not observed for all diet quality indices. Diet indices may have limited utility in populations where the specific healthful foods and food groups emphasised by the index are not widely consumed. Objective: The prevalence of hypertension in premenopausal women is increasing. There is substantial need for novel strategies to identify women who would benefit from increased screening and early interventions. Several mechanisms likely contributing to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are also involved in hypertension, including renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system dysfunction and micronutrient deficiencies. However, it is unknown whether young women with PMS have elevated blood pressure. Materials and Methods: We evaluated the association of blood pressure, PMS, and premenstrual symptoms in a cross-sectional study of 409 young women (mean age 21 years), conducted from 2006 to 2014. Our analysis included 78 cases (19%) who met established criteria for clinically significant PMS and 88 controls (22%) experiencing few symptoms. Blood pressure was measured during the mid-luteal phase. Lifestyle, diet, anthropometry, and other factors were measured by questionnaire and/or direct measurement. Results: After adjustment for smoking, body mass index, and other factors, mean diastolic blood pressure in PMS cases was 72.3 versus 69.1 mm Hg in controls ( p = 0.02). Diastolic blood pressure was also significantly higher in women reporting specific symptoms; for example, mean diastolic blood pressure in women reporting moderate or severe premenstrual nausea was 77.7 mm Hg compared with 71.0 mm Hg in women without nausea ( p = 0.007). Systolic blood pressure did not vary by PMS status. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is among the first studies to suggest that diastolic blood pressure is elevated in young adult women experiencing PMS. Recruiting sufficient numbers of participants for physical activity trials for individuals with diabetes can be difficult because there are often many behavioral demands for participants, and inclusion and exclusion criteria can be extensive. This study examined the recruitment strategies used for a randomized, controlled trial designed to investigate the efficacy of an automated telephone intervention to promote physical activity in adults with type 2 diabetes in an urban Veterans Administration health care system. Traditional recruitment approaches of posting flyers and obtaining referrals from clinicians did not yield sufficient numbers of interested patients. Using the electronic medical record system to identify patients with uncontrolled diabetes allowed staff to send targeted mailings to participants, and 77% of participants were recruited using this method. The targeted mailing approach elicited a positive response rate of 12% (328 of 2,764 potential participants identified) and appeared to produce a more representative and appropriate sample than other recruitment methods used. Lessons learned in this study may be helpful to researchers in future trials who attempt to recruit participants with diabetes for physical activity protocols. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adequate folate status in early pregnancy is critical to prevent congenital malformations, yet little is known about whether exposure to folate, specifically folic acid supplementation beyond the recommended dose, influences chronic health outcomes. The link between maternal folate levels and risk of childhood asthma and allergic disease has been investigated in 10 large prospective cohort studies that reported conflicting results. While the majority of studies reported no association, those supporting a positive relationship found a small increase in risk that was generally transient in nature, confined to early childhood, and associated with folic acid supplementation in late pregnancy. This systematic review presents background information on maternal folate exposure and childhood asthma, synthesizes the current epidemiologic evidence in the context of the methodological differences among studies and their potential limitations, and offers direction for future research. To estimate the association between multiple domains of physical activity and risk of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth. We utilized data from 1,040 participants in the Latina Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Study, a prospective cohort of predominantly Puerto Rican prenatal care patients in Massachusetts. Physical activity was assessed by bilingual interviewers using a modified version of the Kaiser physical activity survey in early (mean = 15 weeks) and mid pregnancy (mean = 28 weeks). Physical activity (i.e., sports/exercise, household, occupational, and active living) in pre, early and mid pregnancy was categorized in quartiles. SGA was classified as <10th percentile of birth weight for gestational age. Pre- and early-pregnancy physical activity were not associated with SGA. In multivariable analyses, women with high total activity in mid-pregnancy had a decreased risk of SGA [risk ratio (RR) = 0.42; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.21-0.82; p = 0.003] as compared to those with low total activity. Findings were similar for high household activity (RR = 0.69; 95% CI = 0.34-1.40; p = 0.26), active living (RR = 0.63; 95% CI = 0.35-1.13; p = 0.04), and occupational activity (RR = 0.79, 95% CI = 0.47-1.34; p = 0.26). High levels of sports/exercise were associated with an increased SGA risk without a significant dose-response association (RR = 2.14, 95% CI 1.04-4.39; p = 0.33). Purpose. To examine factors associated with smoking cessation at pregnancy onset In Hispanic women. Design. Cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the prospective Latina Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Study. Setting. Public obstetrical practices of a medical center in Massachusetts, 2000-2004. Subjects. A total of 351 Hispanic (predominantly Puerto Rican) prenatal care patients who smoked in the year prior to pregnancy. Measures. At enrollment, interviewers collected self-reported cigarette smoking prior to and during pregnancy and sociodemographic, health, and acculturation factors. Analysis. Logistic regression and backward elimination procedures were used to determine factors independently associated with quitting. Results. Forty-five percent of women reported quitting smoking at pregnancy onset. In multivariate analyses, women born outside the United States, women with a family history of diabetes, and non-Puerto Rican Hispanics were 32% to 54% more likely to quit smoking. Women with high stress, women with marijuana use, and parous women were 23% to 49% less likely to quit. Women who smoked 20+ cigarettes/d in prepregnancy were less likely to quit smoking (relative risk = .44; 95% confidence interval .27, .65) compared with light smokers. Age, income, body mass index, language preference, prepregnancy exercise, and alcohol consumption were not associated with quitting. Conclusions. Non-U.S. birthplace, family history of diabetes, and non-Puerto Rican ethnicity were associated with quitting smoking at pregnancy onset in Hispanic women. Background: Disturbances in glucose metabolism during pregnancy are associated with negative sequalae for both mother and infant. The association between smoking and abnormal glucose tolerance (AGT) remains controversial. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the relationship between smoking prior to and during pregnancy and risk of AGT. Methods: We utilized data from a prospective cohort of 1,006 Hispanic (predominantly Puerto Rican) prenatal care patients in Western Massachusetts. Women reported pre- and early pregnancy smoking at recruitment (mean = 15 weeks) and mid pregnancy smoking at a second interview (mean = 28 weeks). AGT was defined as > 135 mg/dL on the routine 1-hour glucose tolerance test (1-hr OGTT). We used multivariable regression to assess the effect of pre, early, and mid-pregnancy smoking on risk of AGT and screening plasma glucose value from the 1-hr OGTT. Results: In age-adjusted models, women who smoked > 0-9 cigarettes/day in pre-pregnancy had an increased risk of AGT (OR = 1.90; 95% CI 1.02-3.55) compared to non-smokers; this was attenuated in multivariable models. Smoking in early (OR = 0.48; 95% CI 0.21-1.10) and mid pregnancy (OR = 0.38; 95% CI 0.13-1.11) were not associated with AGT in multivariable models. Smoking during early and mid pregnancy were independently associated with lower glucose screening values, while smoking in pre-pregnancy was not. Conclusions: In this prospective cohort of Hispanic women, we did not observe an association between smoking prior to or during pregnancy and risk of AGT. Background: Adjustment for covariates (also called auxiliary variables in survey sampling literature) is commonly applied in health surveys to reduce the variances of the prevalence estimators. In theory, adjusted prevalence estimators are more accurate when variance components are known. In practice, variance components needed to achieve the adjustment are unknown and their sample estimators are used instead. The uncertainty introduced by estimating variance components may overshadow the reduction in the variance of the prevalence estimators due to adjustment. We present empirical guidelines indicating when adjusted prevalence estimators should be considered, using gender adjusted and unadjusted smoking prevalence as an illustration. Methods: We compare the accuracy of adjusted and unadjusted prevalence estimators via simulation. We simulate simple random samples from hypothetical populations with the proportion of males ranging from 30% to 70%, the smoking prevalence ranging from 15% to 35%, and the ratio of male to female smoking prevalence ranging from 1 to 4. The ranges of gender proportions and smoking prevalences reflect the conditions in 1999-2003 Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System (BRFSS) data for Massachusetts. From each population, 10,000 samples are selected and the ratios of the variance of the adjusted prevalence estimators to the variance of the unadjusted (crude) ones are computed and plotted against the proportion of males by population prevalence, as well as by population and sample sizes. The prevalence ratio thresholds, above which adjusted prevalence estimators have smaller variances, are determined graphically. Results: In many practical settings, gender adjustment results in less accuracy. Whether or not there is better accuracy with adjustment depends on sample sizes, gender proportions and ratios between male and female prevalences. In populations with equal number of males and females and smoking prevalence of 20%, the adjusted prevalence estimators are more accurate when the ratios of male to female prevalences are above 2.4, 1.8, 1.6, 1.4 and 1.3 for sample sizes of 25, 50, 100, 150 and 200, respectively. Conclusion: Adjustment for covariates will not result in more accurate prevalence estimator when ratio of male to female prevalences is close to one, sample size is small and risk factor prevalence is low. Purpose: Osteoporosis affects 4–6 million (13%–18%) postmenopausal white women in the United States. Most studies to date on risk factors for osteoporosis have considered body mass index (BMI) only as a possible confounder. In this study, we assess the direct relationship between BMI and osteoporosis. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among women aged 50–84 years referred by their physicians for a bone mineral density (BMD) examination at Baystate Medical Center between October 1998 and September 2000. BMI was determined prior to the BMD examination in the clinic. Information on other risk factors was obtained through a mailed questionnaire. Ordinal logistic regression was used to model the association between BMI and osteoporosis, controlling for confounding factors. Results: BMI was inversely associated with BMD status. After adjustment for age, prior hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use, and other factors, odds ratios (OR) for low, high, and obese compared with moderate BMI women were 1.8 (95% CI 1.2-2.7), 0.46 (95% CI 0.29- 0.71), and 0.22 (95% CI 0.14-0.36), respectively, with a significant linear trend ( p < 0.0001) across BMI categories. Evaluating BMI as a continuous variable, the odds of bone loss decreased 12% for each unit increase in BMI (OR = 0.88, 95% CI 0.85-0.91). Conclusions: Women with low BMI are at increased risk of osteoporosis. The change in risk associated with a 1 unit change in BMI (∼5–8 lb) is of greater magnitude than most other modifiable risk factors. Stress associated with attempts to integrate into a new culture is directly linked to mental health outcomes among refugees. However, there is a paucity of literature on how refugees cope to reduce their stress. This study assessed the association between coping strategies and perceived stress among resettled Bhutanese adults in Western Massachusetts. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 225 Bhutanese (men: 113, women: 112) refugees aged 20-65 years residing in Massachusetts. Coping was measured with the 32-item Tobin Coping-Strategies Inventory-Short Form (CSI-SF). The 32-item CSI-SF includes 8 subscales: problem-solving, cognitive-structuring, express-emotions, social-contact, problem-avoidance, wishful thinking, self-criticism, and social-withdrawal, each with 4 items. Four composite constructs were created from subscales, namely, problem-focused engagement (problem solving + cognitive structuring), emotion-focused engagement (express emotions + social contact), problem-focused disengagement (problem avoidance + wishful thinking), and emotion-focused disengagement (self-criticism + social withdrawal). Perceived stress was measured with the 10-item Cohen Perceived Stress Scale. Associations of coping scores with perceived stress score (PSS) were assessed using multiple linear-regression analyses adjusting for sociodemographic, and lifestyle factors. The coping scores of 4 subscales were inversely associated with PSS including problem solving (β = -0.430, p ≤ .0001), cognitive structuring (β = -0.416, p = .0002), express emotions (β = -0.292, p = .004), and social contact (β = -0.448, p ≤ .0001). Two composite constructs of subscales, namely, problem-focused (β = -0.236, p ≤ .0001) and emotion-focused (β = -0.199, p = .0003) engagement coping strategies were inversely associated with PSS. Greater use of problem- or emotion-focused engagement coping strategies was associated with reduced PSS among Bhutanese, suggesting that problem-focused or emotion-focused stress management interventions hold promise for stress reduction among resettled Bhutanese. Background: Resilience, or an individual's positive response in managing life's adversities, is of increasing interest in addressing the mental health disparities in refugees. Although the link between stressful life events and poor mental health is established, research on the role of resilience on the mental health of refugees is limited., Aims: This study assessed the association between resilience and anxiety or depression in resettled Bhutanese adults in Western Massachusetts., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 225 Bhutanese (men: 113, women: 112) refugees aged 20-65 residing in Massachusetts. Resilience was measured with the 25-item Wagnild and Young's Resilience Scale including two constructs as follows: a 17-item 'personal competence' that measures self-reliance, independence, determination, resourcefulness, mastery and perseverance and an 8-item 'acceptance of self and life' that measures adaptability, flexibility and a balanced perspective of life. Higher total scores indicate greater resilience. The Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 was used to measure anxiety (10-item) and depression (15-item) with a cutoff mean score of ⩾1.75 for moderate to severe symptoms. Associations of resilience with anxiety or depression scores were assessed using multiple-linear and logistic regression analyses., Results: The proportion of participants with above threshold anxiety and depression were 34.2% and 24%, respectively. Resilience was inversely associated with both anxiety (beta for 1 unit change in resilience scores: β = -0.026; p  = .037) and depression (β = -0.036, p  = .041). 'Personal competence' resilience was inversely associated with both anxiety (β = -0.041 p  = .017) and depression (β = -0.058, p  = .019), but 'acceptance of self and life' resilience was not. Participants with the highest tertile of resilience scores had a significantly decreased risk of anxiety (ORs (95% CI): 0.13 (0.04-0.40)) and depression (0.16 (0.04-0.60))., Conclusion: Higher resilience was associated with reduced anxiety and depression among Bhutanese with personal competence resilience accounting for most of the effects. These findings suggest the potential targets for mental-health intervention to improve resilience in refugees.

Background: Latina women are at increased risk for antenatal depressive disorders, which are common during pregnancy and are associated with elevated risk for poor maternal health and birth outcomes. Physical activity is a potential mechanism to reduce the likelihood of depressive symptoms. The purpose of the study was to assess whether total and domain-specific physical activity in early pregnancy reduced risk for elevated antenatal depressive symptoms in mid-late pregnancy in a population of Latina women at high-risk for depression., Methods: Data from 820 Latina participants in the prospective cohort study Proyecto Buena Salud was examined using multivariable logistic regression. Total, moderate/vigorous, and domain-specific physical activity (household/caregiving, occupational, sports/exercise, transportation) were assessed using the Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used to assess depressive symptoms and identify women with elevated symptoms indicative of at least probable minor depression and probable major depression., Results: A total of 25.9% of participants experienced at least probable minor depression and 19.1% probable major depression in mid-late pregnancy. After adjusting for important risk factors, no significant associations were observed between total physical activity (4th Quartile vs.1st Quartile OR = 1.02, 95% CI = 0.61, 1.71; p-trend = 0.62) or meeting exercise guidelines in pregnancy (OR = 0.96, 95% CI = 0.65, 1.41) and at least probable minor depression; similarly, associations were not observed between these measures and probable major depression. There was a suggestion of increased risk of probable major depression with high levels of household/caregiving activity (4th Quartile vs 1st Quartile OR = 1.51, 95% CI = 0.93, 2.46), but this was attenuated and remained not statistically significant after adjustment. When we repeated the analysis among women who did not have elevated depressive symptoms in early pregnancy (n = 596), findings were unchanged, though a nonsignificant protective effect was observed for sport/exercise activity and probable major depression in fully adjusted analysis (OR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.30, 1.33)., Conclusion: Among Latina women at high-risk for antenatal depression, early pregnancy physical activity was not associated with elevated depressive symptoms in mid-to-late pregnancy.

Background: Previous studies have suggested that violence victimization is prevalent among women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). However, it is unclear whether early life abuse contributes directly to PMS or whether associations are explained by the high prevalence of PMS risk factors including smoking and obesity among women reporting childhood abuse., Methods: We have assessed the relation of early life abuse and the incidence of moderate-to-severe PMS in a study nested within the prospective Nurses' Health Study 2. Participants were aged 27-44 years and free from PMS at baseline, including 1,018 cases developing PMS over 14 years and 2,277 comparison women experiencing minimal menstrual symptoms. History of early life emotional, physical, and sexual abuse was self-reported in 2001., Results: After adjustment for obesity, smoking, and other factors, emotional abuse was strongly related to PMS (pTrend<0.0001); women reporting the highest level of emotional abuse had 2.6 times the risk of PMS as those reporting no emotional abuse (95% confidence interval, 1.7-3.9). Women reporting severe childhood physical abuse had an odds ratio of 2.1 (95% confidence interval, 1.5-2.9; pTrend<0.001) compared with those reporting no physical abuse. Sexual abuse was less strongly associated with risk. Adjustment for childhood social support minimally affected findings., Conclusions: Findings from this large prospective study suggest that early life emotional and physical abuse increase the risk of PMS in the middle-to-late reproductive years. The persistence of associations after control for potential confounders and mediators supports the hypothesis that early life abuse is importantly related to PMS.

Background: Epidemiologic studies of companion animals offer an important opportunity to identify risk factors for cancers in animals and humans. Canine malignant lymphoma (CML) has been established as a model for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Previous studies have suggested that exposure to environmental chemicals may relate to development of CML., Methods: We assessed the relation of exposure to flea and tick control products and lawn-care products and risk of CML in a case-control study of dogs presented to a tertiary-care veterinary hospital (2000-2006). Cases were 263 dogs with biopsy-confirmed CML. Controls included 240 dogs with benign tumors and 230 dogs undergoing surgeries unrelated to cancer. Dog owners completed a 10-page questionnaire measuring demographic, environmental, and medical factors., Results: After adjustment for age, weight, and other factors, use of specific lawn care products was associated with greater risk of CML. Specifically, the use of professionally applied pesticides was associated with a significant 70% higher risk of CML (odds ratio(OR)=1.7; 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.1-2.7). Risk was also higher in those reporting use of self-applied insect growth regulators (OR=2.7; 95% CI=1.1-6.8). The use of flea and tick control products was unrelated to risk of CML., Conclusions: Results suggest that use of some lawn care chemicals may increase the risk of CML. Purpose: Studies of smoking during pregnancy and preterm birth among Hispanic women are sparse. Our goal was to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoking during pre-pregnancy, early pregnancy, and mid pregnancy on preterm birth among Hispanic women, the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States., Methods: We evaluated data from a prospective cohort study of 1,041 Hispanic (predominantly Puerto Rican) women recruited between 2000 and 2004 in Springfield, Massachusetts. At recruitment (mean = 15 weeks), women reported their smoking since pregnancy awareness (early pregnancy) and in the year prior to pregnancy (pre-pregnancy). Mid pregnancy smoking was collected at a second interview (mean = 28 weeks)., Results: Smoking in pre-pregnancy was not associated with preterm birth. After adjustment for age, parity, education, and illicit drug use, women who smoked in early pregnancy had 1.6 times the risk of preterm birth (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0-2.7) compared with nonsmokers. Women who smoked in mid pregnancy had 2.1 times the risk of preterm birth (95% CI, 1.0-4.2) compared with nonsmokers with a trend of increased risk of preterm birth with increasing levels of smoking (p trend, 0.03)., Conclusions: Smoking in early or mid pregnancy increased the risk of spontaneous preterm birth in a Hispanic population.

It is unclear how objective risk factors influence the factors associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk perception. The goals of this study were to investigate factors associated with perceived risk of CRC and to explore how these relationships were modified by personal history of polyps or family history of CRC. The study involved a mailed questionnaire completed by 1646 men and women aged 50-75 years, which assessed perceived risk, demographic and health history variables and CRC worry. Participants were patients of primary care providers in a community medical group in central Massachusetts. The study sample seemed to have a generally accurate perception of CRC risk, which was appropriately increased in the presence of known risk factors. In multivariable analyses that controlled for all measured covariates, financial situation modified the association between perceived risk and a personal history of polyps, while age and insurance status modified the association between perceived risk and family history of CRC. CRC worry, self-reported health, personal history of other cancer and compliance with screening guidelines remained significant predictors of perceived risk. Potential interactions between objective risk factors and socioeconomic characteristics should be further explored in longitudinal studies.
