The article offers information on the sacred sites of the Winnemem Wintu, a community of 120 self-enrolled members in Northern California, which is vulnerable to extinction. The Winnemem Wintu community holds a strong sense of cultural identity even though 90 percent of their homeland was flooded by the Shasta Dam. The community has a physical and spiritual connection to the McCloud River Basin, and their children are made to visit sacred sites to learn their ancestors' spiritual knowledge.
