This paper presents my contribution to an interdisciplinary study of large landowners in the Camargue initiated by the Tour du Valat Research Centre for the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands. As repositories of a rich natural environment these landowners are the main target of conservation policies in this protected area. To find solutions to halt the loss and degradation of natural habitats, my study aimed initially to assess the gap between the representations and management of biodiversity by the landowners and the type of management advocated by the conservation actors in the Camargue Regional Park. This led to identifying a conflict between the private landowners and public actors of nature conservation regarding the control of the Park, with a resulting serious handicap for an efficient integrated management. In analyzing the conflict, there emerged three profiles of landowner relationship with their land: those who consider it as an economic investment, those who consider it as a farming inheritance, and those who view it essentially as a place for leisure. In conclusion the study showed that despite conflicting positions, a discussion is possible, however, between ecologists and conservation managers on the one hand and some land owners on the other, who for different reasons view their heritage as common heritage. Abstract: The Late Miocene distribution and diversity of zooxanthellate-like corals in the Mediterranean are analyzed in their paleobiogeographical framework, using our REEFCORAL database. The Late Miocene Mediterranean pool reached 20 z-coral genera. Although this fauna could build flourishing reef ecosystems during the Early Messinian, it was a relict fauna with severely limited speciation that lived on the edge of its ecological requirements in terms of solar energy and temperature range. Most z-coral genera, because they had long stratigraphic ranges and had survived previous extinctions, were able to adapt to the Messinian environments, which were unusual for such biotas. Hence, Porites, the most widespread genus in the region and also the most dominant in ecological assemblages, was the best equipped to cope with the drastic changes related to the Messinian Salinity Crisis. Abstract: The wetlands of North Africa are an endangered and invaluable ecological heritage. Some of these wetlands are now protected by various conservation statutes; which actual impact has not yet been reliably evaluated. This article aims to assess the conservation management (Nature Reserve and Ramsar site) of a protected Tunisian lake, Majen Chitane, by using palaeoecological, historical and modern data, and by comparing it with the unprotected lake Majen Choucha. While located in similar environments, these lakes are today home to very different flora. Baseline conditions reconstructed from literature indicate that both lakes were very similar until the 1950s, and comparable to the current state of Majen Choucha, housing rich oligotrophic plant communities. In the 1960s, at the time that cultivation of the adjacent peatland began, Majen Chitane underwent strong ecological changes as the initial oligotrophic plant, diatom and zooplankton communities were replaced by eutrophication-tolerant ones. Eutrophication led to the local extinction of 40–55% of the hydrophytic and temporary-pool plant species, including those characteristic of the Isoetion. Given the damages and despite the recent conservation status of the site, it''s unlikely that Majen Chitane will undergo any natural regeneration. Restoring it would start with completely protecting the complex lake-peatland and re-introducing the locally extinct species from Majen Choucha. The Mediterranean region is identified as one of the world's 36 biodiversity hotspots, with the Earth's most biologically rich yet threatened areas. Lebanon is a hub for Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) biodiversity with 9116 characterized plant and animal species (4486 fauna and 4630 flora). Using DNA barcoding as a tool has become crucial in the accurate identification of species in multiple contexts. It can also complement species morphological descriptions, which will add to our understanding of the biodiversity and richness of ecosystems and benefit conservation projects for endangered and endemic species. In this study, we create the first reference library of standard DNA markers for mammals and plants in the EMR, with a focus on endemic and endangered species. Plant leaves were collected from different nature reserves in Mount Lebanon, and mammal samples were obtained from taxidermized museum specimens or road kills. We generated the 12S rRNA sequences of 18 mammal species from 6 orders and 13 different families. We also obtained the trnL and rbcL barcode sequences of 52 plant species from 24 different families. Twenty-five plant species and two mammal species included in this study were sequenced for the first time using these markers.

Six temporary wetlands in the region of Sejenane (Mogods, NW Tunisia) were studied in order to characterize the aquatic flora and fauna and to quantify their spatio-temporal variability. Samplings of aquatic fauna, phytosociological relevés, and measurements of the physicochemical parameters of water were taken during four different field visits carried out during the four seasons of the year (November 2009-July 2010). Despite the strong anthropic pressures on them, these temporary wetlands are home to rich and diversified biodiversity, including rare and endangered species. Spatial and temporal variations affect fauna and flora differently, as temporal variability influences the fauna rather more than the plants, which are relatively more dependent on spatial factors. These results demonstrate the interest of small water bodies for maintaining biodiversity at the regional level, and thus underscore the conservation issues of Mediterranean temporary wetlands that are declining on an ongoing basis currently., (Copyright © 2014 Académie des sciences.
