Abstract Madrepora oculata and Lophelia pertusa are the two main ecosystem engineering, scleractinian cold-water corals (CWC) found in Mediterranean canyons. Factors controlling CWC distribution in the Mediterranean Sea are not yet fully understood in spite of such ecosystems being recognized as sensitive habitats by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean. As they are threatened by fishery activity, they are subject to management and protection measures. In order to contribute towards identifying the major drivers governing CWC distribution at local scale, which is a prerequisite for proper management, we focused our attention on two canyons: (1) the Cassidaigne canyon, located in the eastern part of the Gulf of Lion, in which CWC ecosystems have settled in an upwelling environment and form large colonies, and (2) the Bari Canyon System, in the southwestern Adriatic, a site of coral growth that has been hypothesized to respond to hydrographic processes, including the cascading of North Adriatic Dense Water. The objective of our study was to combine several ecological variables to describe the environmental conditions in favor of CWC settlement and growth: (1) CWC observations, extracted from geo-referenced underwater videos, (2) seafloor characteristics derived from high-resolution bathymetry, (3) data on local hydrodynamic conditions (from high resolution hydrodynamic models). Habitat suitability models were used to identify the main variables driving CWC distribution. Models based on presence-only data (Maxent and ENFA) and on presence-absence data (GLMs) were fitted and compared. Seafloor ruggedness was identified to be the major factor driving CWC distribution in both canyons with the three methods. Two hydrodynamic variables (mean temperature and current velocity) were the second most important predictors for explaining CWC settlement and growth. Suitable areas for CWC habitat occurrence were mapped for both canyons. Spatial distributions were generally predicted at the same locations, although the GLM gave less realistic results in the Bari canyon system probably due to the limited range cover of the entire environmental conditions by the absence points, suggesting that the Maxent and ENFA models were more efficient. These theoretical distributions will help in the assessment of potential habitat extent in the deep-sea and also in the scheme of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). High habitat diversity was observed on the Seco de los Olivos Seamount (SW Mediterranean Sea), a Site of Community Importance belonging to the Spanish marine Natura 2000 Network. Thirteen epibenthic habitats were identified by analysing 55 Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) transects from 76 m to 700 m depth and derived data from multibeam bathymetry and high resolution seismic profiles. Habitat identification was based on a combination of assemblages of habitat-forming species and the environmental characteristics supporting their distribution. Depth and slope were identified as the main significant factors structuring epibenthic assemblages. The high diversity and patchiness of habitats found on the Seco de los Olivos Seamount can be explained by the high environmental variability resulting from its wide geomorphologic diversity, where flat summits, steep flanks, rocky outcrops and sedimentary moats are combined. The distribution of benthic habitats at this seamount is likely a combination of suitable ecological conditions, local recruitment, feeding strategies and attachment mechanisms. Knowledge on the occurrence of habitats in areas of natural importance is crucial to species and habitats conservation and to develop proper monitoring and management programs aimed at fulfilling European regulation requirements. A new method based on photographic sampling coupled with in situ observations was applied to 53 stations along the French Mediterranean coast, to assess the integrity of coralligenous reefs affected by different levels of anthropogenic pressure. The conservation state of the assemblages characterizing these habitats was then assessed by an index – the INDEX-COR – that integrates three metrics: (i) the sensitivity of the taxa to organic matter and sediment deposition, (ii) the observable taxonomic richness, and (iii) the structural complexity of the assemblages. The sensitivity of INDEX-COR was tested and showed good correlation with the Level of Pressure calculated for each station according to expert judgment and field observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the Mediterranean Sea, brown macroalgae represent the dominant species in intertidal and subtidal habitats. Despite conservation efforts, these canopy-forming species showed a dramatic decline, highlighting the urge for active intervention to regenerate self-sustaining populations. For this reason, the restoration of macroalgae forests through transplantation has been recognized as a promising approach. However, the potential stress caused by the handling of thalli has never been assessed. Here, we used a manipulative approach to assess the transplant-induced stress in the Mediterranean Ericaria amentacea , through the analysis of biochemical proxies, i.e., phenolic compounds, lipids, and fatty acids in both transplanted and natural macroalgae over time. The results showed that seasonal environmental variability had an important effect on the biochemical composition of macroalgae, suggesting the occurrence of acclimation responses to summer increased temperature and light irradiance. Transplant-induced stress appears to have only amplified the biochemical response, probably due to increased sensitivity of the macroalgae already subjected to mechanical and osmotic stress (e.g., handling, wounding, desiccation). The ability of E. amentacea to cope with both environmental and transplant-induced stress highlights the high plasticity of the species studied, as well as the suitability of transplantation of adult thalli to restore E. amentacea beds.

Abstract: This work aims to compile knowledge on ecologically rich habitats that deserve special protection in the Mediterranean high seas. Many marine ecosystems are currently threatened by fishing activities, such as bottom trawling, gillnets and demersal and pelagic long-lines. Especially vulnerable are areas described as either sensitive habitats or essential fish habitats. Among these we highlight the associations of sessile organisms, such as cold coral reefs, mostly detected on continental slopes, seamounts and on the walls of submarine canyons, and those areas considered as hot spots of diversity and habitat of vulnerable fauna, like cold seeps, hydrothermal vents and submarine canyons. Essential habitats for pelagic species are defined by oceanographic features like productive areas associated with upwelling, and in the Mediterranean the spawning areas and migratory routes of bluefin tuna, swordfish, and albacore are of high conservation interest. We propose that in a context of difficult fisheries management in Mediterranean international waters, or high seas, these vulnerable habitats should be protected through the establishment of a web of Marine Protected Areas coordinated by all the involved countries and controlled by strict surveillance. Abstract: Habitat destruction is one of the main threats to environmental integrity. Assessing the consequences of human impacts is crucial both to predict and prevent structural and functional changes of habitats. However, to date almost all studies on marine threats, from regional to global scales, have been entirely qualitative and generally based on little more than expert opinion. We have developed a meta-analytical approach to quantify overall effects of various stressors on different Mediterranean habitat types and to compare the relative importance of different impacts across a range of habitats. We first qualitatively reviewed and synthesized 366 experiments (either manipulative or correlative) collected in the literature. After a selection procedure, we finally quantitatively meta-analyzed 158 experiments. We showed that fisheries (destructive or not), species invasion, aquaculture, sedimentation increase, water degradation and urbanization have negative effects on Mediterranean habitats and associated species assemblages. We also explored the overlap between the impacts identified as important in the Mediterranean and those identified by experts as being important globally, highlighting the inadequacies of relying on expert opinion alone. Finally, we drew attention to the critical lack of empirical knowledge about marine systems in many areas of the Mediterranean, which impedes the implementation of effective conservation measures. The article discusses the environmental quality assessment of Mediterranean and Black Sea transitional waters by comparing the patterns of variation of five benthic biotic indices. Eight transitional water habitats were investigated, including lagoons, coastal lakes and saltmarsh. Results show that biotic indices provided contrasting responses in terms of environmental quality assessments of each habitat. It suggests further study to develop a biotic index that provides useful and unambiguous data under various anthropogenic pressures and in various transitional waters.
