The management of waste has been the major issue in the state of Meghalaya and as well as in the other part of the world. In order to reduce the solid waste in the locality the method of vermicomposting has been implemented. The organic waste is being produced from each and every household so as to reduced the waste from one particular locality, the organic waste has been collected from few houses like the food waste, areca nut shell and so on and then this waste are further used in the vermi-composting so as to reduced them. The waste generated from agricultural and municipal can also be reduced through the vermi-composting method. Vermicomposting is one of the process that help us mainly in waste reduction and in this method only organic waste can be reduced. In this method the basic procedure is that we are using earthworm as the source to reduce the waste and after three months the number of the earthworm increase and the organic waste is broken down by the earthworm species which lead to its conversion into the organic fertilizers. Through this method we are able to know that vermicompost produced a very rich micro and macronutrients; namely calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc etc(16). Vermi composting is an eco friendly method which is also economical and it is also socially acceptable(12). The organic fertilizers which we obtained from vermicomposting can be used for the plant growth as well as in the agricultural field(7). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
