Using an adaptation of the traditional Gini index in spatial autocorrelation models and the analysis of thematic cartography, this article aims to show that there is uncertainty about the spatial patterns found in the outsourcing process of Latin American cities, understanding that certain economic activities in this sector break with the typical center-periphery layouts and take advantage of territorial capacities to establish autonomous production environments. When analyzing different Advanced Producer Services sectors in the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara, in Mexico, it was seen that there is a reduced presence of medium to largesized businesses, which leads to the limited construction of production agglomerations outside the main city center. However, a relational analysis of the space leads one to consider that apart from showing a predilection for the urban west, there are services that in their strategic role could provide the basis for the future development of clusters in this city [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several empirical studies indicate that the lack of financing is one of the main barriers that affects the economic growth of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The main objective of this investigation was to determine to what extent the economic sector, the enterprise size, the characteristics inherent to the enterprise, the legal status, the variables linked to the performance of the enterprise, and the attributes of the owner influence the access to the bank financing of SMEs in Mexico. Using a discrete-response probit regression model, the impact of enterprise characteristics on the probability of obtaining a bank loan was determined. The data collected are from the Enterprise Surveys of Mexico, carried out by the World Bank. The sample of 1480 enterprises is representative by enterprise size, by economic sector, and by region. The research has a quantitative approach with a correlational scope, and a nonexperimental and transectional design. One of the main results highlights that the determinants with the greatest influence on access to bank financing are: the age, the small size, foreign participation, and the manufacturing sector. These results are consistent with other empirical studies, as well as with the pecking-order theory and the financial life-cycle theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: This study seeks to determine which method for studying melliferous flora is suitable for planning corresponding research. Knowledge of melliferous flora has applications in areas of commercial and scientific interest because pollinators, such as different bee taxa, provide ecosystem services that include the pollination of both agroecosystems and wild ecosystems. In this manuscript, we reviewed research carried out in Mexico on the identification of melliferous flora, emphasizing the methods used and highlighting their implications for bee–plant–human interactions as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods used in the determination of this type of vegetation. Methods such as observations of the foraging process, palynological analysis, and taxonomic determination via genetic sequencing were analyzed. We observed advantages in each method, but better integration between methods would facilitate concrete advances in understanding this type of flora. Ultimately, the determination of melliferous flora is a practical tool that provides useful knowledge in diverse economic and scientific sectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FLOOD damage , *EVIDENCE gaps , *FEDERAL jurisdiction , *ECONOMIC impact , *COVID-19 pandemic , *ECONOMIC sectors , *FLOOD warning systems - Abstract
Flooding, including inland and coastal flooding, is one of the most devastating and costly natural hazards in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Recent research conducted by an international team has focused on understanding the true and comprehensive economic costs of floods, with an eye toward addressing their impacts, allocating adequate resources for monitoring and preparedness, and building resilient communities. Flood-costing methods vary greatly among federal and subnational jurisdictions across the three North American countries. Because the rigor and consistency of existing datasets across the three countries vary significantly, it is also difficult to determine the economic impacts of cross-border events. This paper aims to critically analyze the research methods used to conduct this trinational project and develop recommendations for enhancing impacts of such work in the future. We discuss three major research barriers: gaps in knowledge and research capacity, differences in data collation and analysis methods across the three countries, and linguistic barriers in working across disciplines and economic sectors. We also explore how the COVID-19 pandemic significantly added to these three barriers. We propose creation of new institutional mechanisms that can play a major role in developing comprehensive, consistent, and cohesive data gathering approaches in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. DISTRIBUTION (Probability theory) , *HEAT stroke , *ECONOMIC sectors , *METEOROLOGICAL stations , *TEMPERATURE , *AGRICULTURAL productivity - Abstract
One of the climate problems that causes the most environmental impact worldwide is the trend of increasing occurrence of events of maximum extreme temperature, signaled by indicators such as hot extremes (HE) and maximum maximorum (highest maximum) temperature (MmT). These events can cause conditions ranging from severe droughts to heat stroke, which can cause death in any population. Indicators of maximum extreme temperature in one of the most important agricultural areas in northwestern Mexico were calculated based on significant trends (ST) and adjusted return periods. To calculate the trends of the maximum extreme temperature, frequency (FR), annual average duration (AAD), annual daily duration (ADD), intensity (IN) of HE, and MmT, the Mann-Kendall and Sen's slope tests were applied to data obtained for 19 weather stations from the CLImate COMputing database for the period 1982-2014. Adjusted return periods (ARP) were calculated for each indicator of maximum extreme temperature by fitting a probability distribution function. For the study area, the ST and maximum extreme temperature shows a prevailing cooling trend. This can be deduced by observing the proportion of negative ST compared with positive ST. The highest positive magnitudes of ST were recorded at stations CUL (FR = 3.44 HE dec-1), GUT (AAD = 6.15 day HE-1 dec-1 and IN = 13.62 °C dec-1), IXP (ADD = 35.00 day dec-1) and POT (MmT = 2.50 °C day-1 dec-1). For ARP, the estimate of the average occurrence frequency of extreme events per100 years are FR = 6.11 HE dec-1 (1 time), AAD = 6.64 day HE-1 dec-1 (4 times), ADD = 38.68 day dec-1 (1 time), IN = 39.09 °C dec-1 (6 times) and MmT = 41.95 °C day-1 dec-1 (1 time). These findings are of key importance for the economic sectors related to agricultural production in the state known, at least to date, as "the breadbasket of Mexico" (Sinaloa). The results will help to develop adaptation/prevention measures before the coming socioeconomic and hydrological disasters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyzes the impact of international oil price uncertainty on the different economic sectors (primary, secondary, and tertiary) in Mexico in the period 1993:1–2020:4 through a bivariate structural vector autoregressive (VAR) model with a generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) in mean to capture the impact of oil volatility on economic growth at the sectoral level of economic activity. The results show that the uncertainty of the international price of oil has a differentiated effect on the different sectors of economic activity in Mexico since it does not influence the primary sector; it negatively impacts the secondary sector, and there is mixed evidence in the tertiary sector. Additionally, evidence is provided that both positive and negative shocks to the international oil price have asymmetric effects at the sectoral level in Mexico. The results highlight the need to implement public policies, at the country level, that help mitigate the effect of uncertainty in the oil market and promote economic stability at the sector level. The article presents two input-out models with inoperability that analyze the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in Mexico. Both use methodological developments in which contributions were made in their specification. The first, a static model, generates a vulnerability index of the economic branches, establishing their priority for attention with economic policy instruments. The second, a dynamic model, estimates possible trajectories of economic recovery of the sectors, their possible duration, and their resilience capacities in the face of persistent phenomena of the pandemic. The models are adjusted to the shortterm indicators produced by the INEGI, reflecting a heterogeneous behavior between the sectors; some have a medium-term tendency not to return to their normal productive capacity. VOCATIONAL education , *EDUCATIONAL planning , *ECONOMIC sectors , *GOVERNMENT policy , *VOCATION , *EMPLOYABILITY - Abstract
This paper presents the results of a study aimed at identifying good practices in different systems of Vocational Education and Training (VET) around the world and in some regions of Mexico, with the purpose of designing a new vocational model for the state of Guanajuato, integrating the educational and employability dimensions, and considering the new trends in vocational systems, that have evolved from an exclusive action of educational centers, towards a new conception that integrates strategic actions carried out collaboratively by educational, governmental, social and economic actors in the region. This is a research project where a documentary analysis methodology is applied, exploring different sources and references of vocation systems that have been implemented by different countries and in other states of the Mexican Republic, to make the proposal of a new vocation model, which is the theoretical-practical reference to coordinate the actions of different actors in the region, which facilitates adequate decision-making by Guanajuato students about the continuation of their educational preparation at the high school and college levels, in addition to the best option for employment. The resulting model integrates two major conceptual axes and four subcategories in each axis, so that it is the initial input for the design of state public policies, as well as the formation of strategies in the educational, social and economic sectors of the state of Guanajuato. The Mexico–China economic relationship is highly asymmetric, although the amount of total trade between the two countries has grown rapidly in the last ten years. Chinese exports to Mexico have grown exponentially and have diversified into different economic sectors. In contrast, Mexican exports to China have also grown but at a much slower pace and the pattern shows more concentration in fewer products. Paradoxically, in the context of the United States–China trade war, the Mexican economy has benefitted from the increase in tariffs that the United States has imposed on Chinese products. In 2019, for the first time, Mexico displaced China as a main trade partner of the United States. In this context, this article analyses the current economic relationship of Mexico with China and the United States in a triangular scheme, the impact of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement on the China–Mexico relationship, and Mexico's trade relationship with both economies in the context of the trade war. LABOR supply , *CENSUS , *GENDER role , *GOVERNMENT policy , *DEMOGRAPHIC surveys - Abstract
Women face disproportionate care burdens on their time because of traditional gender roles, lack of public policies supporting them and the lack of government services for satisfying society's care needs. This unequal distribution of care responsibilities reduces their opportunities to fully participate in labour markets. We argue that all else equal, women's physical proximity to affordable care services is key to determining their accessibility to them. In addition, services may have different effects on women's labour force participation (LFP), depending on their care responsibilities and other characteristics of their social and economic local conditions, such as size and type of economic output. We use geospatial analysis to explore the relationship between the local supply of care services and women's LFP. We use the population census and the intercensal population survey of Mexico, together with data from economic censuses and directories of care and financial services. We also develop an exploratory data analysis model for the Colombian case. We find that, given gender roles in care provision and women's accessibility to economic sectors, the supply of care services and the type of local economies are quite significant in determining their LFP, regardless of their educational level. Accordingly, mere investment in care services may not be enough since the economic output and type of activities also interfere with LFP. Besides, this effect increased considerably during the COVID-19 pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While the agricultural sector contributes the economic growth, it also induces GHGs and causes environmental degradation. The effect of agriculture activities on environmental degradation receives attention last several years in environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) literature. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of agriculture activities (AGRI), energy consumption (EC), foreign direct investment (FDI), and trade openness (TO) on CO
2 in the context of EKC hypothesis for the Next Eleven countries in the period of 1991–2019. For this purpose, we employ common correlated effects mean group estimator (CCEMG) to obtain panel and country-specific results. In addition, Dumitrescu–Hurlin panel causality test is used to examine the pairwise causal relationship between variables. The results show that the EKC hypothesis, the inverted U-shape relationship between CO2 and GDP, is valid for Bangladesh, Mexico, Nigeria, Turkey, and the panel. FDI has significantly positive association with CO2 for South Korea and the panel. TO has significantly negative association with CO2 for Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mexico, and the panel but significantly positive relationship with CO2 in Philippines. Moreover, the focus variable AGRI has significantly negative association with CO2 for Bangladesh, Turkey, and the panel but significantly positive relationship with CO2 for Mexico. This article explores the hypothesis that innovation is an important driver of growth, using an interregional dynamic panel model that controls for endogeneity and captures cumulative effects. In Mexico, the evidence based on three regional criteria (geography, income, and innovation stimulus intensity) suggests that innovation has positive effects on growth, as has been theoretically hypothesized, but with gradual reductions from 2008 and significant variations by region and sector. Furthermore, public support for innovation produced different effects between areas with varying degrees of economic development, with greater elasticity in less-economically developed areas. This reality could facilitate the reduction of regional inequalities. Support for innovation should prioritize intensive high-tech projects, include more diverse economic agents, and have a regional perspective. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The automotive industry is one of the important economic sectors for Mexico and the world due to the large areas of development, marketing, design, strategies, and sales. Currently one of the biggest challenges in the industry is the application of new Industry 4.0 methods for the evolution of companies in the industry, which require a higher level of digital maturity. This article defines concepts such as digitization and digital transformation to understand the new path of the automotive industry, which companies must know, to adapt to the digital transformation process to modernize and renew their production processes. The stages of digital transformation will be analyzed, so that companies know the quality needs they require in production processes, establishing new objectives and developing models to reach a satisfactory digital transformation. The phases of digital transformation of companies are a challenge for most of them due to the impact of new quality trends, that is why their stages must be known for the proper automotive operation; The people who make up the industry are the leaders capable of transforming the culture of companies. Organizations are the ones that define digital transformation and optimization plans for all areas of companies, therefore, they will obtain the greatest digital benefits and opportunities. The article shows the importance of the process of adaptation of any company to digital technologies in order to optimize the process and the product and satisfy the customer, it is important to have a culture that transforms their processes, strategies, products, people, services and quality. Mexico exhibits the lowest labor productivity of all OECD countries and main groups of nations. However, little is known about its behavior at the sector-state level, or whether it was affected by the global financial crisis (GFC). Therefore, this paper explores the extent to which the GFC affected the convergence—catch-up—process of seventeen Mexican economic sectors in the 1999–2014 period. Moreover, this paper identifies the regions that were more affected by the GFC and analyzes whether the sectoral composition is driving the states' labor productivity convergence patterns. Results suggest that the GFC pushed 13 economic sectors toward convergence and changed the direction of the pre-GFC catch-up trend in 15; that the labor productivity convergence pattern barely changed in the north of Mexico in the short term, and that the biggest changes occurred in the center and south regions; and that states' sectoral composition drives their labor productivity patterns. Despite the increasing prevalence of forest-cover change and conflicts, most studies have been unable to unravel the complex relations between the two processes. We attribute this failure to methodological limitations. We put forward an alternative approach that combines different datasets (remote sensing, GIS, local narratives, official censuses, newspaper articles), methods (spatial and relational analyses), and scales (subregions, economic sectors, land-based activities) to create a robust explanation of the relations between different intensities of forest-cover change and conflict in the Meseta Purépecha region, central Mexico. This is an important forest region, inhabited by indigenous and mestizo peasants; it has a worldwide reputation for community forestry and is also the epicenter of international avocado production. Forest-cover change is intense and there are recurrent episodes of conflict. We clustered communities in three subregions according to their patterns of forest-cover change. We analyzed the spatial patterns of forest-cover change and conflicts and we characterized the structure and function of the different economic sectors to unravel the nonlinear, interdependent (and sometimes contradictory) relations among these processes. We found that avocado production has differentially shaped the composition and working of society within each subregion, leading to three diverging patterns. Avocado production has provoked conflicts over landownership and over illegal logging in nearby areas. In some areas, a low incidence of conflicts over forest clearance might be explained by high profits, coercion, and violence. We suggest that, by combining spatial and relational analyses, we can integrate and check the congruence of nonequivalent representations from quantitative sources and observant participation at different scales and explain the heterogeneity that processes display across space. Our methodological approach can thus improve our understanding of similar and other complex and uncertain environmental problems elsewhere, especially when accurate or appropriate data are missing. The objective of this article is to analyze the trend of Foreign Direct Investment (fdi) in the state of Guanajuato, in particular, that attracted by the automotive industry during the period 2000-2016. This study uses a quantitative methodology to describe the behavior and general trends of the total FDI flows, the data used were gathered from official statistics sources and the results from a research project carried out from 2014 to 2017. The main conclusions drawn are: FDI in the automotive industry has allowed Guanajuato to become one of the main emerging and dynamic center of this sector in Mexico. There is a positive impact on the economic development of the State, measured through created employment, exports, and economic growth, among others. The main factors that have promoted the FDI flows are: a) infrastructure, low wages, skilled workforce, etc., and b) State industrial policies have implemented attractive incentives for the companies. Informal entrepreneurship is a persistent and extensive phenomenon in both developed and developing countries and considerable efforts have been made to understand it from an ecosystem perspective. Nevertheless, literature that analyzes networks within and among individuals in the informal economic sector has received less attention. This study presents an interesting extension of Granovetter's "strength of weak ties" hypothesis. Until now, strong ties are perceived to be constraining and less beneficial than weak ties for the entrepreneurial activity. However, this paper critically examines this assumption in the context of informal entrepreneurship to explore in detail this networking dynamic and how it affects their financial and social performance. A qualitative approach using 50 face-to-face interviews in Mexico was conducted. Our findings demonstrate that strong ties provide the resources, support and information informal entrepreneurs need to reduce their adversity and vulnerable conditions, having a positive impact on their financial and social outcomes. INFRASTRUCTURE (Economics) ,STOCKS (Finance) ,BENCHMARKING (Management) ,ECONOMIC sectors ,ECONOMIC development - Abstract
After much debate, many academic circles have concluded that under the right circumstances, infrastructure stocks may be a promoter for growth. This paper benchmarks Mexico's infrastructure quantity stocks and identifies Mexico's infrastructure bottlenecks in regard to 94 countries. With a sample of annual data from 1960 to 2014, the analysis focuses on three economic sectors-telecommunications, energy and transport-by three exercises: (1) reviewing trends (simple and conditional) from an international perspective, (2) estimating infrastructure's effect on growth with the generalized method of moments methodology, and finally, (3) calculating Mexico's infrastructure gap compared to region leaders. The main findings indicate that Mexico's infrastructure stocks were the lowest compared to similar countries in 1990. In 2010, Mexico improved its infrastructure stock provision, but still lags from the world mean. With 6-year average periods, there is statistically significant evidence of a positive effect of infrastructure on growth. Overall, Mexican infrastructure quantity is behind most regional leader's, barely surpassing that of India's. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, I seek to sharpen the understanding of the economic channels through which sector-specific distortions affect aggregate outcomes. I pay special attention on how cross-sector misallocation might arrive as a result of these distortions, and clarify how models of resource misallocation across heterogeneous firms differ from models of resource misallocation across sectors. I present facts that suggest the presence of such distortions in Mexico, a noteworthy developing country. The paper highlights the importance of understanding the origin and nature of sector-specific distortions for policy design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents an inventory of 139 nanotechnology companies in Mexico, identifying their geographic distribution, economic sector classification, and position in the nanotechnology value chain. We find that the principal economic sector of nanotechnology-engaged firms involves the manufacture of chemical products, which largely serve as means of production (primary or intermediate materials; instruments and equipment) for industrial processes. The methodology used in this analysis could be replicated in other countries without major modifications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on Mexico's economic conditions and political dynasty. The country's first reformist President Luis Echeverria has committed his administration to close the economic gap between the poor and lagging rural population and the well-to-do urban classes. The essential theme of his administration has been its policy of dialogue of being open to the aspirations of all sectors such as the workers, students, entrepreneurs. It also notes that his economic reform program, which includes modernizing governmental machinery, fighting corruption, uplifting the rural sector, and tax and banking reforms, has been opposed by businessmen and conservatives within his own party, the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI).

In this paper, an attempt has been made to analyse how the violence and abuse against elderly migrants in Monterrey, Mexico affects their health. For this research, 257 elderly Mexican migrants were surveyed in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey during 2012 through 2013. The study found that the majority of elderly people migrate to urban areas in search of a better economic opportunity. Once in the city, they are absorbed into the informal economic sectors. Results indicate that most of these elderly people suffer physical, sexual and psychological violence, as well as neglect and financial abuse from their employer, relatives, clients and pedestrians, which has an adverse effect on their health. Elderly migrants reported numerous health problems, where many of them were suffering from different types of injuries, stress and depression, among others. This paper concluded that violence suffered by elderly migrants has a significant impact on their health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies about the demand of productive factors of the Maquiladora Industry have focused in the labor demand. Such literature has advanced in two directions: specifying dynamic models of labor demand; or deriving the demand of productive factors from production functions that assume constant returns to scale, functional separability or certain substitution patterns among them. In this paper we estimate a translog production function without imposing a priori these restrictions. Our objective is to determine whether there is evidence supporting those assumptions. In particular, we analyze the hypotheses of constant returns to scale, and the different forms of functional separability in a three inputs production function. We use data that combines annual time series (1990-2006) with cross section of nine economic sectors of the Mexican maquiladora. We find no evidence supporting the assumptions that have been used in previous studies of factor demand. Specifically, we find evidence of decreasing returns to scale, and that the elasticities of substitution between the productive factors are all different. The estimated elasticity of substitution between labor and capital is below one; between labor and materials fluctuates between 1 and 1.5; whereas the elasticity of substitution between capital and materials is above 2. During the global crisis. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has withdrawn from developed economies and has substantially increased in emerging and transitional economies. In this scenario. Mexican MNEs have been spreading during the last four years. after starting their internationalization two decades ago. In this paper we show that the relationship between two factors-economic sector and geographical location of FDI - explains the difference in outcome of corporate operations during the crisis. While positive results have been found regarding investments in Latin America and Asia. less favorable results are registered in investments in Europe and the United States. These findings modify the theoretical approach on the "location determinants" of FDI. Our sources are enterprise's websites and direct surveys applied during the last four years for a sample of 20 of the largest MNEs in Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Territorial economic analysis at the municipal level allows identifying the specific problematic at the micro-region level. The purpose of this paper is to characterize the municipal economic growth of the State of Mexico and its tendencies regarding urbanization, labor specialization and soil uses, based on territorial and economic variables from the sectors in which it is employed, generating a reference framework that enables proposals' elaboration for the various problematics in each region and municipio. It is clear that the State of Mexico has gone through transformations during 1990-2007 towards urban economic growth polarizing its regions, with a broad economic diversification and with mixed orientation among the three economic sectors, which implies a great competence for job positions. The environmental knowledge of inhabitants residing in a highly biodiverse mountainous region of western Mexico with an important economic forestry sector was investigated. Indices of environmental knowledge, by average and through a factor analysis, were developed and characterized using survey data collected in 2018 and 2021. These indices showed high levels of correlation, and followed similar patterns of distributions. Ordinary least squares and quantile regressions were used to examine social, economic, demographic, and perceptions as determinant factors of the generated indices. Age and education were repeatedly found as important factors influencing environmental knowledge, while income and gender were consistently not significant factors. Furthermore, environmental knowledge was related to quality of life. The index developed by factor analysis generated more significantly stable parameter results across percentiles of environmental knowledge. The indices were recommended for monitoring environmental knowledge in long term studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work is an account of the results of a study that was carried out in order to know the principal components of the collaboration between the Mexican productive sector and the Technological Centers of Research and Development of the Conacyt System (CTID-SC). Its objective is to contribute towards the construction of a theory which can explain those factors that determine linkage between the aforesaid centers, and firms in the industrial sector. The accumulated empirical evidence shows that those using the centers tend to benefit in four different ways from the linkage: 1) excellence; 2) professionalism; 3) cooperative behaviour; 4) competitivity. It was concluded that a technological policy--when it attempts to promote linkage between CTID-SC and the Industrial sector- should take into account the effect of the different business's technological capacties in relation to the effectivity of the services provided by the Centers at the moment of establishing their organizational missions. FOREIGN investments ,INVESTMENTS ,INDUSTRIALIZATION ,TELEPHONE lines ,INFRASTRUCTURE (Economics) ,ECONOMIC sectors - Abstract
In December 1993, restrictions to foreign ownership across major Mexican economic sectors were abolished. This paper studies output, industrialization intensity, "international infrastructure", and government expenditures on infrastructure as determinants of FDI inflows into Mexican states over 1994-2001. We conduct a "general to specific" estimation strategy across Mexican states. Telephone lines appear to be very important to FDI as their coefficients are around 2.0 in Random Effects Models. Industrialization is also important, with coefficients varying from 0.62 to 0.67. Allowing for endogeneity between FDI and real output, dynamic GMM panels confirm the robust effects of telephone lines on FDI. International infrastructure thus appears more conducive to FDI than domestic infrastructure, such as interstate and secondary roads. With international infrastructure being a major catalyst of FDI inflows into Mexico, we provide support to ongoing conventional wisdom promoting such type of investment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
