Introduction and Aim: Association of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) with fatty liver (FL) disease is controversial. The purpose of this study was to analyze the association of VDD with FL., Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study. Data on cardiovascular risk factors, medications, alcohol intake, smoking, diet, and physical activity were obtained. Biochemical, anthropometric, and blood pressure variables were measured. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was quantified through chemoluminescence. The presence of FL, defined as a liver/spleen attenuation index lower than 1.0, was identified through computed axial tomography (CAT)., Results: The study included 1,467 subjects (49.7% men) with a mean age of 53.3 ± 9.3 years and BMI of 28.3 ± 4.0 kg/m2. Only 11% had optimum values of vitamin D, and 25(OH)D concentration was lower in participants with FL. Multivariate logistic regression models, adjusted for age, gender, BMI, sampling season, glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, HOMA-IR, hs-CRP, ALT, AST, and elevated VAT, revealed an association between FL and vitamin D (VD) insufficiency (RM 1.61 [0.99-2.61]) and with VDD (RM 1.68 [1.02-2.77]); however, statistical significance was lost when including caloric consumption and physical activity in the model., Conclusions: In Mexican adults, deficient VD concentration and FL were not independently associated of caloric consumption and physical activity.

Background: Microalbuminuria is an early marker of atherosclerosis. Ethnic differences for both conditions have been reported. We studied microalbuminuria prevalence and its association with coronary artery calcification as an early atherosclerosis marker in a Mexican-Mestizo population free of diabetes and hypertension (healthy), as well as in hypertensive and diabetic subjects., Methods: In 1,472 adults (53.3 ± 9.4 years old, 50.3% women), anthropometric measurements, fasting blood glucose, and lipid profile were determined. A spot urine sample was used to quantify the albumin-to-creatinine ratio and to define microalbuminuria (20-200 mg/g in men, and 30-300 mg/g in women). A coronary artery calcification score was obtained by electron-beam computed tomography and subclinical atherosclerosis was defined as a score > 0., Results: Overall microalbuminuria prevalence was 9.3% (5.4% in healthy, 11.6% in obese, 12% in hypertensive, and 25% in diabetic subjects). Compared to "healthy" subjects without microalbuminuria, those with microalbuminuria had a ∼3-fold higher prevalence of coronary artery calcification > 0, while normal-high albumin-to-creatinine ratio (OR: 1.8; p < 0.05) and microalbuminuria (OR: 2.6; p < 0.001) was independently associated with coronary artery calcification > 0 only among diabetic subjects., Conclusions: Microalbuminuria and high-normal albumin-to-creatinine ratio were independently associated with subclinical atherosclerosis, suggesting that they may confer a higher risk of future cardiovascular events.

The CC chemokine monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1/CCL2 is involved in the formation, progression, and destabilization of atheromatous plaques and plays an essential role in postinfarction remodeling. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of MCP-1 gene polymorphisms as susceptibility markers for premature coronary artery disease (CAD) and cardiovascular risk factors in the Mexican population. Four MCP-1 gene polymorphisms (rs1024611, rs2857654, rs3760396, and rs1024610) were genotyped by 5' exonuclease TaqMan assays in a group of 1072 patients with premature CAD, and 1082 healthy unrelated controls (with negative calcium score by computed tomography) seeking for associations with premature CAD and other metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors using logistic regression analyses. MCP-1 polymorphism frequencies were similar in premature CAD patients and healthy controls. When the analysis included only those premature CAD patients without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the rs1024610 polymorphism was associated with increased risk of developing premature CAD under dominant and additive models adjusted by age and gender (OR=1.33, Pdom=0.040 and OR=1.34, Padd=0.027). The effect of the MCP-1 polymorphisms on various metabolic cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic parameters was explored separately in controls, and premature CAD. In this analysis adjusted by age and gender, the rs3760396 CC genotype was associated with low levels of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (P=0.002), whereas, the rs1024610 TT genotype was associated with decreased risk of T2DM (P=0.035) in premature CAD patients. One haplotype (CATG) was associated with increased risk of developing premature CAD (OR=1.44, P=0.0019). In summary, in our study, the rs1024610 polymorphism was associated with increased risk of developing premature CAD only in those patients without T2DM. The four MCP-1 polymorphisms were in high linkage disequilibrium and one haplotype was significantly associated with risk of developing premature CAD., (Copyright © 2015 European Federation of Immunological Societies. Background and Rationale: Fatty liver (FL) and abdominal visceral fat (AVF) are strongly associated with systemic inflammation, however, it has not been defined if each one is independently involved, and if the insulin resistance is associated. To investigate if FL, AVF and insulin resistance are independently or additively associated with the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in subjects without coronary artery disease we included 491 men and 553 women., Material and Methods: All had anthropometric and plasma biochemical measurements, FL and AVF assessments by computed tomography., Results: The FL prevalence was 35.6% in men and 28.0% in women, p < 0.01. The prevalence of obesity, metabolic syndrome and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was significantly higher in FL compared to non FL subjects. FL and AVF accounted for 21 and 17%, respectively, to hs-CRP plasma levels. FL, AVF ≥ P75 and HOMA-IR ≥ P75 were independently and additively associated with plasma hs-CRP. The risk of hs-CRP ≥ 3 mg/L increased progressively in men from 1.36 (0.5-3.86) through 3.58 (1.32-9.7) in those with 1 or 3 factors respectively. In women from 2.25 (1.2-4.2) to 4.67 (2.3-9.4), respectively. In conclusion, both the FL and hs-CRP ≥ 3 mg/L occur in 1 of every 3 non CAD subjects. In men, FL and AVF ≥ P75 were associated with 3.6 times the risk of hs-CRP ≥ 3 mg/L, while in women, these factors were independently and additively associated with a 4.7 times higher risk of systemic inflammation.

Objective: To determine whether HDL size distribution and HDL subclasses are associated with coronary calcium scores., Methods: We screened 677 apparently healthy individuals by coronary tomography. One hundred twenty subjects were then recruited for the study and grouped by coronary artery calcification scores (CAC). Forty asymptomatic patients with atherosclerosis with CAC scores ≥75th percentile for gender and age were placed in the first group. Forty patients with CAC scores ≤25th percentile and 40 matched controls (CAC = 0) made up the two remaining groups. HDL samples were separated via sequential ultracentrifugation, followed by electrophoresis: they were then enzymatically stained and densitometrically analyzed to determine the triglycerides (Tg), phospholipids (Ph), and plasma cholesterol (C) concentrations corresponding to each HDL subclass., Results: HDL size distribution, lipid and non-lipid risk factors for atherosclerosis were similar among the three groups: HDL-cholesterol and HDL-phospholipids were significantly lower in the CAC ≥75th percentile group, whereas HDL-lipids in the CAC ≤25th group were comparable to the controls. HDL2b- and HDL2a-cholesterol were decreased, whereas phospholipids were lower in patients constituting 4 of the 5 HDL subclasses. The Ph-to-Tg ratios of small HDL were higher in both experimental groups compared with the controls, suggesting that these lipoproteins had abnormal structures. In spite of the significant differences between the high-CAC score subjects and the controls, statistical analyses demonstrated no substantial relationship between CAC scores and HDL parameters: other lipid and non-lipid risk factors for atherosclerosis were not statistically linked to CAC scores. Only male gender and age contributed to CAC scores in our study population., Conclusions: Our results suggest that CAC scores and traditional lipid profiles are independent aspects of atherosclerosis and that only lipids may be biomarkers of coronary calcification during the asymptomatic stages of the disease; however, HDL subclasses do not contribute to CAC scores., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Aim: The role of interleukin 17A (IL-17A) in the inflammatory process has caused interest in the potential significance of IL-17A as a biomarker for coronary artery disease (CAD). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of IL-17A gene polymorphisms as susceptibility markers for CAD in the Mexican population., Methods: Four IL-17A gene polymorphisms (rs8193036, rs3819024, rs2275913 and rs8193037) were genotyped by 5' exonuclease TaqMan assays in a group of 900 patients with premature CAD and 667 healthy controls (with negative calcium score by computed tomography), seeking associations with CAD and other metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors using logistic regression analyses., Results: No single IL-17A polymorphism was associated with premature CAD, however two haplotypes (CAGG and TAGA) were significantly associated with increased risk of premature CAD (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.00-1.84, P = 0.018 and OR = 2.09, 95% CI: 1.16-3.76, P = 0.003, respectively). Moreover, rs3819024 was associated with increased levels of visceral abdominal fat (P = 0.002) and rs8193036 was significantly associated with risk of central obesity (P = 0.020), hypertriglyceridemia (P = 0.027), and metabolic syndrome (P = 0.027) in the premature CAD group, under dominant models adjusted by age, gender, BMI, smoking history, alcohol consumption, and treatment., Conclusion: The results suggest that IL-17A haplotypes are involved in the risk of developing premature CAD and some IL-17A polymorphisms are associated with cardiovascular risk factors in Mexican individuals with premature CAD.

Aims: Angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism has been associated with the genetic susceptibility to several cardiovascular diseases; however, its association with cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) in different populations needs to be clarified. The purpose of this study was to identify the CRF patterns associated with the ACE I/D polymorphism in women from different Mexican communities., Methods: ACE I/D polymorphism was determined in two groups of healthy young women: 105 from an urban community and 59 from a semi-urban community using the polymerase chain reaction technique. Distributions of clinical and laboratory profiles among I/D genotypes were analyzed., Results: Women from the semi-urban community had significantly larger waist diameter and higher diastolic blood pressure than women from the urban community (p = 0.003 and p = 0.0055). Differences in the distribution of total cholesterol (p = 0.0008), triglycerides (p = 0.0091), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (p = 0.0272) between genotypes in each community were identified. Women with II genotype had larger values of these CRFs. Estimated risks showed that women from the urban community with the II genotype have three times more risk of having abnormal LDL-C values than women with ID genotype (p = 0.041). Estimated risks between women from semi-urban and urban community showed that urban women have 2.7 and 2.2 times more risk to have abnormal values of LDL-C and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, respectively (p = 0.010 and p = 0.029), and that women from semi-urban community have three times more risk of having a waist diameter above 80 cm compared to the urban community (p = 0.011)., Conclusion: The results showed that II homozygous women have higher risk of having high levels lipids and triglycerides than women with ID genotype.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of high blood pressure and associated cardiovascular risk factors in Mexican adolescents., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 770 male and 1076 female students (12 to 16 years old) from eight randomly selected high schools in Mexico City. Anthropometry, blood pressure and fasting lipids and lipoproteins were measured., Results: Blood pressure levels were adjusted for age, gender, and height. The prevalence rates of hypertension (systolic blood pressure (SBP) and/or diastolic (DBP) > or =95th percentile), and pre-hypertension (SBP or DBP > or =90th but <95th percentile) were 10.6 and 10%, respectively. Compared to normotensive subjects, those with high blood pressure showed a significantly higher prevalence of obesity, overweight, and dyslipidemia. A stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that waist (18.3%), Tanner stage (4.7%), age (2.1%), gender (0.6%), and body mass index (BMI, 0.3%) accounted for 26% of the variance in SBP; whereas BMI (8.7%), age (4.8%), Tanner stage (1.7%), waist (0.4%), and gender (0.4%) accounted for 15.9% of the variance in DBP., Conclusions: These results reveal a high prevalence of high blood pressure in adolescents living in Mexico City. Prehypertensive and hypertensive subjects showed a higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, suggesting that, as adults, these adolescents will be at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
