In the wake of collective trauma and tragedy, artists may be called upon as "second responders" to facilitate healing and grief for a community. In this article, we explain the artists-as-second-responders discourse, including the messaging of artists feeling useful, art as diversion, and art as healing. Then, using an example of student-artists compelled to make sure "the show must go on" at Michigan State University in the days after a mass school shooting, we critique the second-responder discourse by arguing that such messaging may cause more harm to artists and facilitate problematic escapism. We also challenge the "call to serve" and offer recommendations for how, on days after, institutions can respond in more trauma-informed and supportive ways. In doing so, we argue that, in fact, the show must not always go on.

In this article, the authors share how a team of librarians used the ADDIE instructional design model to incorporate best practices in teaching and learning into an online, four-credit information literacy course. In this redesign process, the Association of American Colleges and Universities' high-impact practices and e-learning best practices were integrated as scaffolds for course content. The authors' experience with this systematic process and the concepts of instructional design suggest that the ADDIE model can be used to achieve several different ends in information literacy instruction. First, it can provide a structure around which librarians can develop a variety of instructional interactions. Second, it can help librarians consider student engagement, learning, and assessment more intentionally. And third, it can help to marry information literacy-specific standards and other learning guidelines, such as high-impact practices and e-learning best practices. From the authors' experience, other academic librarians may find applications for instructional design constructs into their own teaching practices, both in online and face-to-face learning environments.

Every August for the past six years, teachers at Walled Lake Consolidated Schools in Michigan learn how to use the latest educational technology tools from their colleagues during the district's one-day technology conference called Spice It Up! The teachers are both the presenters and the attendees, and they have a shared goal of moving the district forward and ensuring that teachers and administrators understand why staff and students must have access to and use technology every day. The purpose of this study was to examine the educational impact of an intervention, the inquiry-focused textbook "Integrating Concepts in Biology" ("ICB"), when used in a yearlong introductory biology course sequence. Student learning was evaluated using three published instruments: 1) The Biology Concept Inventory probed depth of student mastery of fundamental concepts in organismal and cellular topics when confronting misconceptions as distractors. "ICB" students had higher gains in all six topic categories (+43% vs. peers overall, p < 0.01). 2) The Biology Card Sorting Task assessed whether students organized biological ideas more superficially, as novices do, or based on deeper concepts, like experts. The frequency with which "ICB" students connected deep-concept pairs, or triplets, was similar to peers; but deep understanding of structure/function was much higher (for pairs: 77% vs. 25%, p < 0.01). 3) A content-focused Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) posttest compared "ICB" student content knowledge with that of peers from 15 prior years. Historically, MCAT performance for each semester ranged from 53% to 64%; the "ICB" cohort scored 62%, in the top quintile. Longitudinal tracking in five upper-level science courses the following year found "ICB" students outperformed peers in physiology (85% vs. 80%, p < 0.01).

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are a long-standing and important design for conducting rigorous tests of the effectiveness of health interventions. However, many questions have been raised about the external validity of RCTs, their utility in explicating mechanisms of intervention and participants' intervention experiences, and their feasibility and acceptability. In the current mixed-methods study, academic and community partners developed and implemented an RCT to test the effectiveness of a collaboratively developed community-based advocacy, learning, and social support intervention. The goals of the intervention were to address social determinants of health and build trust and connections with other mental health services in order to reduce mental health disparities among Afghan, Great Lakes Region African, and Iraqi refugee adults and to engage and retain refugees in trauma-focused treatment, if needed. Two cohorts completed the intervention between 2013 and 2015. Ninety-three adult refugees were randomly assigned to intervention or control group and completed four research interviews (pre-, mid-, and postintervention, and follow-up). Several challenges to conducting a community-based RCT emerged, including issues related to interviewer intervention to assist participants in the control group, diffusion of intervention resources throughout the small refugee communities, and staff and community concerns about the RCT design and what evidence is meaningful to demonstrate intervention effectiveness. These findings highlight important epistemological, methodological, and ethical challenges that should be considered when conducting community-based RCTs and interpreting results from them. In addition, several innovations were developed to address these challenges, which may be useful for other community-academic partnerships engaged in RCTs.

This article builds on the 2007 College and Research Libraries article, "The Librarian, the Machine, or a Little of Both." Since that time, Oakland University Libraries implemented changes to its instruction program that reflect larger trends in teaching and assessment throughout the profession; following these revisions, librarians undertook a new study to assess the effectiveness of online library instruction in face-to-face courses in comparison to the hybrid model that had been in place. The study's design and its results serve to contribute to discussion of best practices in information literacy pedagogy, online learning, instructional design, and the role of the librarian therein. Librarians recognize the importance of professional learning as their roles and responsibilities evolve in the shifting teaching and learning environments of the twenty-first century. However, the literature on meaningful, job-embedded learning opportunities for academic librarians is scant, and opportunities are especially scarce in the fields of instructional design and instructional technology. Using a qualitative case study approach, the author of this article presents how one group of academic librarians added to their knowledge of instructional design, instructional technology, and the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

Oakland University (OU) Libraries undertook an assessment of how to leverage its resources to make online tutorials more focused on users' needs. A multi-part assessment process reconsidered Web tutorials offerings through the lenses of faculty and staff feedback, literature review, and an analysis of other universities' online tutorial offerings. From there, OU's e-Learning and Instructional Technology Librarian developed the MAGIC guidelines (Manageable, Available, Geared at users, Informative, Customizable) to resituate OU Libraries' online tutorials and place users at the center. Putting MAGIC into practice meant integrating Web tutorials at points-of-need, identifying and sharing essential information, and engaging students in the learning whenever possible.

Social skills are an important part of development, and deficits in this area have long-term impacts on a child. As a result, clinicians should include a measure of social skills as part of a comprehensive assessment. There are a few well-researched measures of social skills that are currently used, including the Matson Evaluation of Social Skills with Youngsters (MESSY). The MESSY has been translated and studied internationally in more than nine countries; however, updated norms for the United States have not been conducted since the inception of the measure. The purpose of this article is to examine the psychometric properties of the MESSY using an updated norm sample and age cohorts. Overall results indicated strong internal consistency and good to strong convergent and divergent validity. Psychometric properties for the older age cohorts were stronger and more consistent than those for the 2- to 5-year-olds. This reflects the variability of development and difficulty of assessing social skills at this young age. (Contains 5 tables.)

Background: Defining the characteristics of healthcare worker (HCW) attitudes toward the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine can provide insights into vaccine hesitancy. This study's goal is to determine HCWs' attitudes regarding the COVID-19 vaccination and reasons for vaccine hesitancy. Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed HCWs working in institutions in Saginaw, Sanilac, and Wayne counties in Michigan (N = 120) using tipping-scale questions. Analysis of variance and t-test were used to measure HCWs' attitudes toward the COVID-19 virus and vaccines. Results: Most HCWs received (95.9%) and recommended (98.3%) a COVID-19 vaccine. The top three factors that HCWs cited for recommending a COVID-19 vaccine were: (1) efficacy of the vaccine, (2) current exposure to patients with active COVID-19 infection and risk of virus spread, and (3) safety of vaccine and long-term follow-up. Female HCWs or HCWs aged 25–54 years were more concerned about contracting COVID-19. Physicians or HCWs aged 55–64 were less concerned regarding the effectiveness and side effects of the vaccine. Conclusions: Gender, age, ethnicity, provider type, and medical specialty showed statistically significant differences among COVID-19 attitudes. Focusing educational efforts on HCW demographics who are more likely to have negative attitudes can potentially decrease vaccine hesitancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An effective approach to engaging populations who face health care access barriers is support from community health workers (CHWs). There is little research, however, on specific barriers and facilitators related to two key areas of CHW practice: outreach, defined as the ability to make any initial contact with the priority population, and engagement, defined as the ability to continue to work with the priority population after initial contact is made. The current qualitative study is ancillary to a randomized evaluation of a CHW-led program for Medicaid Health Plan enrollees. Implementation experiences with outreach and engagement led the evaluators to develop the current study in which health plan and nonhealth plan CHWs (n = 12) serving low-income, predominantly Black populations in Detroit participated in qualitative semistructured interviews to elucidate barriers and facilitators to outreach and engagement. All audio recordings were transcribed verbatim. The study team used inductive qualitative data analysis techniques. Barriers to outreach included inaccurate contact information and mistrust. Barriers to engagement included lack of ability to provide needed resources, leading to hopelessness and diminished trust, and discontinuity of services due to eligibility changes and terminated programs. Facilitators included adapting outreach schedules and strategies to community needs, availability of resources, and relational strategies that leveraged CHW social proximity. Further research should systematically investigate the relative success of different CHW-led outreach and engagement strategies for specific populations so as to better design and implement CHW programs. Research data management (RDM) skills are vital yet often untaught in graduate programs, especially in the social sciences. In this article, the authors present a case study of how a research data librarian and an education librarian partnered to provide targeted RDM instruction for a previously unconsidered student group: education doctoral students. They discuss the design, development, and implementation of this focused RDM support. Assessment data from a workshop and in-class sessions are presented and contextualized. Background. Cixutumumab (a humanized monoclonal antibody against insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor [IGF-1R]) and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor temsirolimus were combined in a phase I study of patients with advanced cancer. We investigated the prevalence of metabolic toxicities, their management, and impact on outcome. Methods. The temsirolimus dose was 25 mg or 37.5 mg i.v. weekly with escalating doses of cixutumumab (3, 5, or 6 mg/kg i.v. weekly). No patients with diabetes or hyperlipidemia at baseline were eligible until the expansion cohort. We assessed metabolic derangements in our patient cohort, their management, and their association with tumor shrinkage, time to progression (TTP) and overall survival (OS). Results. Of the 57 patients analyzed, hyperglycemia was seen in 36 (63%) (grade 1-2: 33 [58%]; grade 3-4: 3 [5%]). The median blood sugar level (fasting and nonfasting) across cohorts was 149 mg/dL (upper limit of normal: 110 mg/dL). No patient developed diabetic ketoacidosis or nonketotic hyperosmolar coma or pancreatitis during treatment. Median maximum triglyceride, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein levels achieved were 247 mg/dL (range: 65-702 mg/dL), 243 mg/dL (range: 103-424 mg/dL), and 153 mg/dL (range 50-375 mg/dL), respectively. Higher glucose levels were associated with more RECIST tumor shrinkage (r= -.30 [95% confidence interval: -.52, -.03; p = .03]). There was no association between metabolic toxicities of the mTOR and IGF-1R combination and TTP or OS. Conclusion. The combination of temsirolimus and cixutumumab was safe and resulted in manageable metabolic toxicities. More tumor shrinkage was seen in patients who developed these adverse events. Although perhaps limited by the small number of patients, no significant association was discerned between hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, or hypercholesterolemia and TTP or OS. While HIV has become a largely chronic disease, age-associated comorbidities are prevalent in people living with HIV (PLWH). Therefore, PLWH are appropriate for advance care planning (ACP) and advance directives (ADs) completion. We sought to characterize AD completion among outpatient PLWH. We conducted a retrospective chart review of PLWH who receive their routine care at the University of Wisconsin HIV clinic. Data were extracted from the electronic health record. Variables were entered into a stepwise multivariate logistic regression model to assess which factors were independently associated with AD completion. Five hundred and eighty eight charts were reviewed. Eighty-one percent of subjects were male and 72% were white; mean age was 46.8 years. ADs were completed by 134 subjects and 6.7% of those were completed at the HIV clinic. In the final multivariate model, those who had completed an AD were more likely to be older than age 45; ever been diagnosed with AIDS; have cardiovascular disease, neurologic disorder, chronic kidney disease, or malignancy. In this study, a small percentage of patients had documented ADs, with only a small proportion completed in the HIV clinic. The HIV clinic is an underutilized resource to offer ACP. Interventions are needed to provide the necessary ACP resources for PLWH. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

We compared the relative abundance of lake trout Salvelinus namaycush spawners in gill nets during fall 1999-2001 in Lake Michigan at 19 stocked spawning sites with that at 25 unstocked sites to evaluate how effective site-specific stocking was in recolonizing historically important spawning reefs. The abundance of adult fish was higher at stocked onshore and offshore sites than at unstocked sites. This suggests that site-specific stocking is more effective at establishing spawning aggregations than relying on the ability of hatchery-reared lake trout to find spawning reefs, especially those offshore. Spawner densities were generally too low and too young at most sites to expect significant natural reproduction. However, densities were sufficiently high at some sites for reproduction to occur and therefore the lack of recruitment was attributable to other factors. Less than 3% of all spawners could have been wild fish, which indicates that little natural reproduction occurred in past years. Wounding by sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus was generally lower for Seneca Lake strain fish and highest for strains from Lake Superior. Fish captured at offshore sites in southern Lake Michigan had the lowest probability of wounding, while fish at onshore sites in northern Lake Michigan had the highest probability. The relative survival of the Seneca Lake strain was higher than that of the Lewis Lake or the Marquette strains for the older year-classes examined. Survival differences among strains were less evident for younger year-classes. Recaptures of coded-wire-tagged fish of five strains indicated that most fish returned to their stocking site or to a nearby site and that dispersal from stocking sites during spawning was about 100 km. Restoration strategies should rely on site-specific stocking of lake trout strains with good survival at selected historically important offshore spawning sites to increase egg deposition and the probability of natural reproduction in Lake Michigan.
