Date fruit is a beloved and widely consumed food in the Middle East and North Africa, and its popularity is growing globally. However, sorting these fruits can be a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, particularly when done manually. To address this challenge, we have proposed an innovative approach that uses multimodal data fusion and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to efficiently classify Algerian date fruit. Our process involves capturing four RGB images of the date fruit from various angles, a thermal image, and the weight of the fruit. We create a new image where the first channel consists of a grayscale image obtained by averaging the four RGB images of the fruit. The second channel contains the thermal image, and the third channel contains the normalized weight data. The new dataset is then divided into training, validation, and testing sets. We conducted experiments using four different models: VGG16, InceptionV3, ResNet50, and Basic CNN. Our findings show that the VGG16 model achieved the highest accuracy during training, validation, and testing, with scores of 99.6%, 90.4%, and 94%, respectively. The InceptionV3 model had the lowest accuracy, while the ResNet50 and Basic CNN models had similar performances. Our results indicate that the VGG16 model is the most suitable for classifying Algerian date fruit. Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is an important fruit of the Middle East and North Africa with a high content of phenolic compounds. This study applied ultrasonic-assisted and conventional methods to extract phenolic compounds from date flesh and seed. The efficacy of the extraction methods is compared in terms of quantity, content, and antioxidant capacity of phenolic compounds. The highest total phenolic content (TPC) was found in ultrasonic-assisted date seed samples extracted by ethanol (18.53 mg GAE/g). In contrast, the TPC content of conventionally extracted seed samples ranged from 1.30 to 14.46 mg GAE/g. The TPC and antioxidant capacity values of phenolic compounds extracted from date flesh samples were lower than those extracted from seed samples. Liquid chromatography electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS) was used to characterize phenolic compounds. A total of 47 different phenolic compounds were identified, including 21 phenolic acids, 21 flavonoids, and 5 other polyphenols. High-performance liquid chromatography equipped with a photodiode array detector (HPLC-PDA) was used to quantify the phenolic compounds in different date samples. The highest content was found in ultrasonic-assisted date seed samples extracted in methanol solvent. The extract also contained epicatechin (36.12 μg/g), coumaric acid (27.05 μg/g), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (21.03 μg/g), syringic acid (19.85 μg/g), and epicatechin gallate (11.67 μg/g). The results showed that ultrasonic-assisted extraction could significantly increase the quantities of functional components of the extracts obtained from fresh date fruit samples. Date fruits are the most common fruit in the Middle East and North Africa. There are a wide variety of dates with different types, colors, shapes, tastes, and nutritional values. Classifying, identifying, and recognizing dates would play a crucial role in the agriculture, commercial, food, and health sectors. Nevertheless, there is no or limited work to collect a reliable dataset for many classes. In this paper, we collected the dataset of date fruits by picturing dates from primary environments: farms and shops (e.g., online or local markets). The combined dataset is unique due to the multiplicity of items. To our knowledge, no dataset contains the same number of classes from natural environments. The collected dataset has 27 classes with 3228 images. The experimental results presented are based on five stages. The first stage applied traditional machine learning algorithms for measuring the accuracy of features based on pixel intensity and color distribution. The second stage applied a deep transfer learning (TL) model to select the best model accuracy of date classification. In the third stage, the feature extraction part of the model was fine-tuned by applying different retrained points to select the best retraining point. In the fourth stage, the fully connected layer of the model was fine-tuned to achieve the best classification configurations of the model. In the fifth stage, regularization was applied to the classification layer of the best-selected model from the fourth stage, where the validation accuracy reached 97.21% and the best test accuracy was 95.21%. Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L., Arecaceae) is a valuable fruit tree for many populations living in the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and the Middle East, and to play significant role in its economy. Asides from its well-known edible fruit, date palm tree also provides numerous by-products which have yet to be fully capitalized upon commercially. All parts of the date palm tree are of value to include: seeds (pits and oil), date pollen and the leaves. Date palm seed is a by-product of the fruit industry being discarded, and used as animal feed or for human consumption as non-caffeinated coffee. Date pollen is used traditionally for the treatment of infertility. This review aims to introduce a holistic overview on the phytochemical composition, nutritional, economical and potential health benefits of date by-products. Dates are one of the most prominent types of fruits spread in the Middle East and North Africa and have been an essential part of the diet of the Arab world since ancient times. It has been called “nature’s candy” due to its sweet taste, which is attributed to its high sugar content. Date fruits have great nutritional and therapeutic value, due to the variety of elements they contain, as they contain a good percentage of fiber, vitamins, and minerals, especially magnesium, potassium, selenium, calcium salts, and fatty acids (lauric, linoleic, palmitic, and citric acid) as well as an excellent source of antioxidants (flavonoids, polyphenols, and carotenoids) which offer significant health-promoting and disease-fighting benefits. In this review, the origin of the date palm fruits was studied, and the nutritional value was compared between three types of dates (Ruthana, Sukari, Ajwa) in terms of the nutritional components and the therapeutic values, which is proven by several studies. The nutritional content of date fruits; sugars, beneficial fats, nutritious proteins, and phytochemicals was reviewed. The health benefits of date fruits include their ability to inhibit free radicals, anti-inflammatory activity, cytotoxicity on cancer cell lines, and the applications for its use as a functional food were indicated. The exact mechanisms still need further research and exploration, specifically, Ruthana fruits as this type of available literature showed a research gap that could be investigated. Date palm fruit is consumed as a highly nutritious food item particularly in the Middle East. This work was designed to investigate the occurrence of filamentous moulds, their toxins in date palm fruit samples, and explore the biocontrol potential of Bacillus cereus 342-2 against few date palms associated fungal species. In total, 36 date palm fruit samples from different sources and varieties were collected from the markets in Qatar. Aspergillus and Penicillium spp. were found to contaminate most of the samples, except Akhlas samples, which were free of any fungal contamination. In total, ochratoxin A (OTA) was found in 6 (16.67%) date samples, all within the permissible limit, except one (2.7%), where the level was above the maximum permissible concentrations of 2 µg/kg. The volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of B. cereus were very effective against the growth of A. niger and A. carbonarius with an inhibition rate of 100%. Whereas their effects against A. flavus was weak as mycelia grew; however, no sporulation occurred until day 7 of co-incubation. Gas chromatography mass spectrophotometry analysis of B. cereus volatiles showed aldehyde as a major component with a peak area of 10.6%, and Undecane with a peak area of 2.02%. The date palm is economically vital in the Middle East and North Africa, providing essential fibres, vitamins, and carbohydrates. Understanding the genetic architecture of its traits remains complex due to the tree's perennial nature and long generation times. This study aims to address these complexities by employing advanced genome-wide association (GWAS) and genomic prediction models using previously published data involving fruit acid content, sugar content, dimension, and colour traits. The multivariate GWAS model identified seven QTL, including five novel associations, that shed light on the genetic control of these traits. Furthermore, the research evaluates different genomic prediction models that considered genotype by environment and genotype by trait interactions. While colour- traits demonstrate strong predictive power, other traits display moderate accuracies across different models and scenarios aligned with the expectations when using small reference populations. When designing the cross-validation to predict new individuals, the accuracy of the best multi-trait model was significantly higher than all single-trait models for dimension traits, but not for the remaining traits, which showed similar performances. However, the cross-validation strategy that masked random phenotypic records (i.e., mimicking the unbalanced phenotypic records) showed significantly higher accuracy for all traits except acid contents. The findings underscore the importance of understanding genetic architecture for informed breeding strategies. The research emphasises the need for larger population sizes and multivariate models to enhance gene tagging power and predictive accuracy to advance date palm breeding programs. Background: Phenolic compounds (polyphenols) are common plant secondary metabolites playing different roles in plants, and some of these vegetables and correlated fruits--figs, grapes, pomegranates, olives, date palms, etc.--contain remarkable and diversified amounts of these substances. In addition, polyphenols are reported to show positive effects for human health, because of their antioxidant behavior. Figs are an excellent source of polyphenols with highest concentrations of proanthocyanidins. Actually, figs contain higher amounts of polyphenols than red wine and tea. Objective: Antioxidant activity of several flavonoids (a group of polyphenols) in figs is higher than that of, vitamin C, glutathione, or vitamin E. Pomegranates contain very high levels of polyphenols as compared to other fruits and vegetables. It is used in folklore medicine for the treatment of various diseases, such as hepatic damage, snakebite, ulcer, etc. Method: The health-positive potential of pomegranate fruit has been mainly attributed to ellagitannins, the predominant class of phenolics in pomegoxidation. Results: The chief phenolic compound found in fresh olive is the bitter secoiridoid oleuropein.. Conclusions: Processing of table olive decreases levels of oleuropein with correlated increases in the hydrolysis of hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol. Many of the health benefits reported for olives are thought to be associated with the levels of hydroxytyrosol. Date palm represents a staple food in most of the Arabian countries and is commonly consumed in several parts of the world. The fruit of date palm trees are an important part of the diet for a large portion of the Middle East and North Africa. The fruit is consumed both fresh and dry and can be stored dry for extended periods of time. Date fruits vary significantly across hundreds of cultivars identified in the main regions of cultivation. Most dried date fruit are low in sucrose but high in glucose and fructose. However, high sucrose content is a distinctive feature of some date fruit and affects flavor as well as texture and water retention. To identify the genes controlling high sucrose content, we analyzed date fruit metabolomics for association with genotype data from 120 date fruits. We found significant association of dried date sucrose content and a genomic region that contains 3 tandem copies of the beta‐fructofuranosidase (invertase) gene in the reference Khalas genome, a low‐sucrose fruit. High‐sucrose cultivars including the popular Deglet Noor had a homozygous deletion of two of the 3 copies of the invertase gene. We show the deletion allele is derived when compared to the ancestral allele that retains all copies of the gene in 3 other species of Phoenix. The fact that 2 of the 3 tandem invertase copies are associated with dry fruit sucrose content will assist in better understanding the distinct roles of multiple date palm invertases in plant physiology. The earliest evidence suggesting the human utilisation of wild date palm fruits in the Near East is dated to the sixth and fifth millennia B.C. Despite the lack of archaeological data, it is commonly believed that at the end of the Late Uruk period (c. 3300–3100 B.C.) the Sumerians established the first date palm plantations. Nevertheless, this belief has never been well-proven by any scientific data, which makes this issue open to debate. This article points to the images of the date palm known from the pictographic script from Uruk as an important source of botanical data—a concept which has never been discussed in the literature—and elaborates on the phenotypic traits of the Phoenix dactylifera L. discernible there. It aims to establish the level and condition of horticultural knowledge of the cultivators of the date palm tree in the late fourth millennium B.C. Many of the botanical traits found on the date palm pictographs are noteworthy, especially where the morphology of the crown, trunk, and root zone are concerned. Most importantly, the identification of pictographs representing date palm inflorescences prompts us to the conclusion that the Sumerians discovered the dioecious nature of the Phoenix dactylifera L. , selecting the staminate inflorescences to pollinate female trees by at least c. 3300 B.C. The discovery of this method of artificial fertilization was a turning point in Mesopotamian agriculture since it enabled farmers to obtain a better crop while economizing on space and labour, constituting the beginning of the date palm plantations that are still such a feature of present-day Iraq. Featured Application: Seeds of the desert date palm tree can be used as potential feedstock for the production of second-generation biodiesels in the Middle East and Africa. Transportation is a vital necessity without which the entire world would come to a standstill. The fossil fuels used to power transportation are consumed at rates of approximately 100,000 times their rate of natural formation, and their consumption subjects the human environment and ecosystem to significant damage. As substitutes for fossil-based diesel, second-generation biodiesels can eliminate many of the challenges concerning first-generation biodiesels in terms of their high cost and the food versus fuel debate. The seeds of the date palm tree have significant oil content and are a promising prospective energy source. This study investigated the potential environmental benefits of this biofuel in terms of diesel tailpipe emission reduction. The various blends of palm date biodiesel were produced and matched to fuel standard requirements, resulting in four standard-compatible blends that were tested in a diesel engine at varying operating conditions for speed and load. Although the biodiesel emissions had lower concentrations of CO2, CO, and HC relative to fossil diesel, higher concentrations of NOx were detected. The results suggest that date-seed biodiesel could become a sustainable energy source for the transport sector, although further technical and economic investigations will be required before its wide deployment. Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is one of the oldest fruit crops grown in the arid regions of the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and the Middle East. The most probable area of origin of the date palm was in or near what is now the country of Iraq, but date cultivation spread to many countries starting in ancient times. Dates are a major food source and income source for local populations in the Middle East and North Africa, and play significant roles in the economy, society, and environment in these areas. In addition to serving directly as a food source, dates are packed and processed in a number of ways, and other parts of the tree are used for various purposes. The date palm is a diploid, perennial, dioecious, and monocotyledonous plant adapted to arid environments. It has unique biological and developmental characteristics that necessitate special propagation, culture, and management techniques. Thousands of date palm cultivars and selections exist in different date-growing countries. Different genetic marker systems have been used to study genetic relationships among date palm cultivars. The long life cycle, long period of juvenility, and dioecism of date palms make breeding challenging. Worldwide date production has grown from 1,809,091 t in 1962 to 6,924,975 t in 2005. Date palms (Phoenix dactylifera) are an important fruit crop of arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa. Despite its importance, few genomic resources exist for date palms, hampering evolutionary genomic studies of this perennial species. Here we report an improved long-read genome assembly for P. dactylifera that is 772.3 Mb in length, with contig N50 of 897.2 Kb, and use this to perform genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of the sex determining region and 21 fruit traits. We find a fruit color GWAS at the R2R3-MYB transcription factor VIRESCENS gene and identify functional alleles that include a retrotransposon insertion and start codon mutation. We also find a GWAS peak for sugar composition spanning deletion polymorphisms in multiple linked invertase genes. MYB transcription factors and invertase are implicated in fruit color and sugar composition in other crops, demonstrating the importance of parallel evolution in the evolutionary diversification of domesticated species.
