The nation-states in the Middle East emphasize the concepts of sovereignty and boundary they acquired from the West, although they do not conform with the actions of these states. It is remarkable that most of these borders are artificial and the ethnic groups living in the region are not taken into consideration. This causes an ethnic group to often stay within the borders of multiple countries. Kurds are one of the examples of the division of the same ethnic group with modern borders, by staying within the borders of more than one country. In this study, Nusaybin and Qamişlo districts at Turkey and Syrian border which are positioned as two opposite cities by the drawing of the borders are examined and envisagement forms and the development of border crossings between the two cities are discussed. As a result of the study, it occurs that the image of the border is not always the same for the states and the people in the border region. Because, while borders define the area that sovereignty is applied for states, it is mostly a simple wire fence or minefield for the people. Thickening of the border, on the other hand, took form due to ethnic continuity across the border. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
