Fisheries constitute an important economic sector for Morocco, where the species Sardina pilchardus represents the main landings. In acoustic evaluations conducted along the Moroccan coast since 1995, the absence of juveniles in 1996 and 1998 and the collapse of the sardine stock between 1996 and 1997 represent the main events until 2002. Sardines are known to be microphageous planktivores and thus are sensitive to environmental variability. A biogeochemical model coupled to a hydrodynamic model (ROMS) was run over the Canary Current System (1991–2002) to investigate the environmental factors that could have played a role in the variability of the sardine spawning. A grid refinement (1/12°) centred on the Saharan Bank (SB) region was built to study the main spawning ground of sardines off northwest Africa. The volume of the potential spawning habitat (PSH) of sardines was defined as a function of depth, temperature and salinity, which are included in the ranges 0–200 m, 15–21°C and 35.8–36.8, respectively. Our modelling frame was able to reproduce the seasonal cycle of temperature, phytoplankton concentration and PSH over the SB. It also captured the warming associated with the negative index of the North Atlantic Oscillation of 1995–1997 and allowed a description of the inter-annual variability of the PSH. Our experiment shows that the volume of PSH was much reduced in 1996 compared to the other years. The results suggest that the delay between high abundance of plankton and favourable spawning conditions is a good proxy for determining the recruitment failure of sardine in this oceanic region. This paper provides information on the early life stages of the Moroccan Atlantic sardine, Sardina pilchardus, and two species of Sardinella: Sardinella aurita and S. maderensis, between Cape Blanc (21°N) and Cape Boujdor (26°N), dealing with the spawning grounds, the nursery areas and the optimal spawning temperature and salinity range.The spawning areas for Sardina are located North of Dakhla (24°30′–25°30′N) and near Cintra Bay (23°N). The larval development area is described together with seasonal and annual characteristics. The nurseries of Sardina are near Dakhla and to the south between 21 and 22°N but precise locations vary with season. The maximum occurrence of eggs was during winter, and was at temperatures from 16 to 18 °C in winter and between 18 and 18.5 °C in summer.The main spawning area of Sardinella species is between Cape Blanc and Cintra Bay (21–23°N) with a maximum occurrence of eggs and larvae in July. For Sardinella off the southern region of Morocco, the optimal temperature interval for spawning is between 18 and 21.14 °C. No conclusions can be drawn on the relationship between spawning and water salinity.The area north of Cintra Bay has a broad, but shallow continental shelf. This topography leads to decreasing dispersion effects and the zone constitutes a favorable area for larval retention and development. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Marine phytoplankton was studied in January and July 2002 along of four transects: 32°30'N, 29°N, 24°30'N and 24°N. A total of 142 taxa were recorded in this area. The maximal specific richness, both in summer and in winter, was registered around Dakhla (24°N). The global spatiotemporal variability of species richness and specific diversity showed that the most structured and species-rich populations are situated in the coastal areas. The vertical variation of the two parameters showed homogeneity between depth levels. The maximal phytoplanktonic densities are recorded in the southern transects due to the permanent upwelling activity in the southern Atlantic coast. The bathymetric distribution of densities was more heterogeneous during summer, characterized by a high intensity of upwelling. The species Thalassionema nitzschioides, Asterionellopsis glacialis, Melosira, Chaetoceros and Leptocylindrus minimus are indicators of upwelling., (Copyright © 2012 Académie des sciences. The study of the Cape Ghir upwelling filament (31°N) focalizes to describe the dispersive mechanism, caused by the upwelling. The zooplankton was sampled during five oceanographic cruises conducted between 2008 and 2009. Surface temperature and chlorophyll "a" were also measured along with sampling. The distribution of environmental parameters accused extensions that show the path of the filament. Copepods constitute the largest fraction of zooplankton community and represented by 86 species, majorly dominated by Acartia clausi and Oncaea venusta. A number of species of deep or cold waters have been recorded in the area corresponding to a net resurgence of cold water. The analysis of the copepods distribution allowed to view the path of the filament at different times of the year. In this paper, we present a deterministic time discrete mathematical model based on multiregional periodic matrices to describe the dynamics of Sardina pilchardus in the Central Atlantic area of the Moroccan coast. This model deals with two stages (immature and mature) and three spatial zones where sardines are supposed to migrate from one zone to another. The population dynamics is described by an autonomous recurrence equation N(t + 1) = A.N(t), where A is a positive matrix whose entries are estimated using data collected during biannual acoustic surveys carried out from 2001 to 2003 onboard the Norwegian research vessel "Dr Fridtjof Nansen". The dominant eigenvalue lambda of A that gives the long-term growth rate of fish population is smaller than one. This agrees with the stock decrease observed in the data collected. We show that lambda is highly sensitive to the recruitment rate and much less sensitive to the reproduction rate. These results can clearly be used to define an efficient scenario in order to fight for instance against a stock decrease.
