This article analyzes the relationship between various forms of intimate partner violence (IPV) and unmet need for family planning (FP) in South Asia. The data were obtained from the latest wave of the Demographic and Health Survey in Afghanistan, India, Maldives, Nepal, and Pakistan. Binary logistic regression analyses show mixed results, with a significant association between at least one type of IPV and unmet need for FP in all countries under study, except Maldives. There were also contrasting findings on the IPV-unmet need nexus, with a positive sign in some but negative sign in others. Women who experienced physical violence were associated with a higher odds of having an unmet need in Pakistan, but the opposite was true in Afghanistan and Nepal. The odds of having an unmet need were higher among Indian women who experienced IPV (sexual and emotional). In Afghanistan, women who experienced IPV (physical and emotional) have lower odds of having an unmet need. However, the interaction analysis of IPV (physical and sexual) and partners' controlling behavior showed a positive association with unmet need. Policymakers need to develop policies and strategies to prevent IPV and reduce unmet need for FP, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This qualitative study explores the experiences of client-perpetrated violence toward female sex workers in Kathmandu, Nepal. Individual interviews were conducted with 30 female sex workers. Data were analyzed using qualitative coding methods and thematic development. Two main themes emerged. Contexts in which client-perpetrated violence corresponded with (a) conditions associated with exchange of services, and (b) alcohol use. The first theme involved five factors: negotiating condom use, number of clients, requesting payment, length of service time, and negotiating sex acts. Objective: To examine relationships between lifetime experience of intimate partner violence (IPV), and current contraceptive use and method among married women of reproductive age in Nepal.Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of 2016 Nepal Demographic Health Survey data on contraceptive use and IPV experience among ever-married women of reproductive age. Weighted percentages were reported and multinomial logistic regression was used to assess associations between IPV (physical, sexual, emotional, or any form) and contraception use (modern reversible, sterilization, or traditional).Results: Among 3562 women who responded to the violence module, 26% reported experiencing any form (physical, sexual or emotional) of IPV in their lifetime. Lifetime exposure to any form of IPV was associated with sterilization (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.50; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12-2.00) and lifetime exposure to physical violence only was significantly associated with having been sterilized (aOR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.17-2.16).Conclusion: Experience of violence, particularly physical violence, was found to be associated with sterilization in Nepal. Research is needed to understand the causes of this association, and the decision-making power dynamics related to contraceptive use, husbands' attitudes toward sterilization, and the reasons why sterilization-relative to other contraceptive options-was the contraceptive method of choice. This study examined prevalence and correlates of spousal physical or sexual violence against married women in Nepal using a nationally representative sample of 3,373 women. About 23 percent had experienced physical abuse and 14 percent had experienced sexual violence by their husbands. Compared to women married at age 20 and after, those married by age 15 had 83 percent and 71 percent higher odds of experiencing physical and sexual abuse respectively. Other risk factors included: husband’s humiliation of wife in front of others, jealousy and mistrust, excessive consumption of alcohol, and women’s awareness of physical violence against their mothers. Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is physical, sexual, or psychological harm perpetrated by a spouse or an intimate partner. Its detrimental effects on women's physical, mental, sexual, and reproductive health are well-documented. However, its impact on nutritional status is not well-studied, and previous studies have led to contradictory findings. This study aimed to explore the association between intimate partner violence and the nutritional status of married Nepalese women., Methods: The study used the 2016 Nepal Demographic Health Survey data, which employed a modified version of the Conflict Tactics Scale to determine women's exposure to IPV. Anemia and low body mass index (BMI) were used as proxies of nutritional status. Multinomial regression was used to analyze the relationship between BMI and IPV; multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the association between anemia and IPV., Results: The prevalence of underweight, overweight/obesity, and anemia were respectively 13.9%, 25.1%, and 38.7%. The prevalence of physical, sexual, and emotional IPVs experienced in the preceding year were respectively 9.8%, 4.6%, and 7.6%. Likewise, the prevalence of lifetime physical, sexual, emotional, and controlling behavior IPVs were respectively 21.8%, 7.4%, 12.3%, and 32.1%. The low intensity of emotional IPV (AOR 1.62; CI: 1.02-2.56) and moderate intensity of physical IPV (AOR 3.70; CI: 1.64-8.35) experienced in the preceding year, and low intensity of lifetime emotional IPV (AOR 1.69; CI: 1.11-2.58) were associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity. Moderate intensity of sexual IPV (AOR 2.59; CI: 1.099-6.108) experienced in the preceding year was associated with an increased risk of underweight BMI. The low intensity of lifetime controlling behavior (AOR1.25; CI: 1.03-1.53) was associated with an increased risk of anemia., Conclusions: Emotional and Physical IPVs are significantly associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity. Sexual IPV is significantly associated with an increased risk of underweight BMI, and controlling behavior is significantly associated with an increased risk of anemia. Seeking help could offset the detrimental effects of IPV; therefore, IPV screening should be a part of regular healthcare assessment for married women, and appropriate rehabilitation should be offered to IPV survivors., (© 2022.
