This article discusses the circulation of information extracted from François Valentyn's Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (1724-1726) during the eighteenth century, both with regards to the central organs of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the Netherlands and the VOC establishments in the East Indies. First, three documents are analysed that were part of five VOC directors' personal archives, with the aim to determine the way these directors made use of Valentyn's book. It is concluded that for these directors Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën was probably the most important source of information about the VOC's trading empire, while at the same time their epistemic interest was limited to matters of trade. Second, the usage of Valentyn's book in various VOC establishments in the East Indies is assessed on the basis of correspondence between these establishments with the VOC central government in Batavia. Because of the fact that Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën was used simultaneously as a source of information by several actors, both in the Netherlands and in the East Indies, this might have resulted in standardising the operational knowledge of the East Indies within the VOC network. Abstract: The pulp and paper industry is placed in a unique position as biomass used as feedstock is now in increasingly high demand from the energy sector. Increased demand for biomass increases pressure on the availability of this resource, which might strengthen the need for recycling of paper. In this study, we calculate the energy use and carbon dioxide emissions for paper production from three pulp types. Increased recycling enables an increase in biomass availability and reduces life-cycle energy use and carbon dioxide emissions. Recovered paper as feedstock leads to lowest energy use (22GJ/t) and CO2 emissions (−1100kgCO2/t) when biomass not used for paper production is assumed to be converted into bio-energy. Large differences exist between paper grades in e.g. electricity and heat use during production, fibre furnish, filler content and recyclability. We found large variation in energy use over the life-cycle of different grades. However, in all paper grades, life-cycle energy use decreases with increased recycling rates and increased use of recovered fibres. The average life-cycle energy use of the paper mix produced in The Netherlands, where the recycling rate is approximately 75%, is about 14GJ/t. Background: A large number of nondigitized electrocardiograph (ECG) strips are routinely collected in larger cohort studies such as the ADDITION study (Anglo-Danish-Dutch Study of Intensive Treatment in People with Screen-Detected Diabetes in Primary Care). These ECG strips are routinely read manually but may contain overlooked information revealing cardiac autonomic dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate whether clinical information may be lost using manual R wave to R wave (RR) interval measurements in the calculation of heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)., Method: From the Danish part of the ADDITION study, we randomly selected 120 T2DM patients at baseline of the ADDITION study. Analysis of the ECG strips was performed using two different methods: (1) by experienced technicians using rulers and (2) by experienced technicians using a high-resolution computer-assisted method. Calculation of heart rate and time domain HRV [standard deviation of normal-to-normal RR intervals (SDNN) and root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD)] were performed with the same software., Results: When comparing results from the two methods, the following values of Pearson's r are obtained: 0.98 for heart rate, 0.76 for SDNN, and 0.68 for RMSSD. These results indicate that heart rate and HRV measurements by the computer-assisted and manually based methods correlate. However, Bland-Altman plots and Pitman's test of difference in variance revealed poor agreements (p < .01) for both HRV measurements (SDNN and RMSSD); only heart rate showed substantiated agreement (p = .54) between the two methods. Low HRV was statistically significantly associated to high heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure in these screen-detected T2DM patients., Conclusions: Paper ECG strips may contain overlooked clinical information on the status of autonomic function in patients with T2DM. In our study, manual measurements of RR intervals were inferior to the computer-assisted method. Based on this study, we recommend cautiousness in the clinical use and interpretation of HRV based on manual or low resolution measurements of RR intervals from ECG strips. High resolution measurements of RR intervals reveal significant associations between low HRV and high heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure among patients with screen-detected T2DM. A survey was carried out in the processing department of a paper mill, consisting of environmental and personal monitoring, a short questionnaire concerning chronic non-specific lung disease (CNSLD), spirometry, and intradermal tests. Spirometry was performed on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Exposures to paper dust regularly exceeded the Dutch Maximal Allowable Concentrations (MACs) for total and respirable dust. There were indications of a qualitatively different exposure to molds inside the mill in comparison with the outdoor air. A comparison between a group of workers exposed to paper dust and a control group showed significantly more persons with positive late and delayed intradermal test reactions in the exposed population. The analysis of the spirometric measurements after correction for differences between the groups in age, height, and smoking habits gave evidence of the existence of lower FEV1, MMEF, MEF50, and MEF25 among exposed workers with a positive immediate intradermal reaction on Friday. The same workers showed a decline in pulmonary function over the week compared with the controls. These changes suggest an obstructive airway reaction with an immunologic mechanism to dust exposure in a paper mill.
