This article presents a historical analysis of three eras in the history of Las Vegas gaming industry leadership: a maverick era, a mafia era, and an MBA era. Within each period, the article highlights the roles of key figures that shaped the industry's evolving landscape. The second section examines management applications that emerged from each of these periods, with a focus on four areas: (1) operating principles, (2) government relations, (3) "backlash management," and (4) the ways in which the mythologies of these eras have actually been used in the selling of the city itself. The article concludes by summarizing the successes and failures of this evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
