The article presents a critique of and expands on the ideas presented in the essay titled "A Friendly Critique of a Child's Right to an Open Future," by Bertram Bandman, published in the December 2001 issue of "Philosophy of Education Yearbook." The author discusses the conflicts between group and individual rights and between minority and mainstream group rights, as relevant to the landmark court case, Wisconsin v. Yoder. He defends the rights of the Amish cultural community to self-determination and preservation of their religious beliefs. The author questions Bandman's contention that Amish children are harmed by not being allowed to develop in accordance with the values of a liberal society.
