The advance of renal replacement therapy options for people with end-stage kidney disease has given rise to the development of specialist renal nurses including the renal transplant coordinator. The renal transplant coordinator role requires a high level of specialist knowledge in renal and transplantation nursing plus a commitment to following through with people in the long term. To find out just what renal transplant coordinators in Australia do, an interview was conducted with renal transplant coordinators from each Australian state and territory. Their stories relate to transplanting units; referring centres; and, adult, paediatric, statewide and national renal services. Background: Paraquat ingestion is frequently fatal. While biomarkers of kidney damage increase during paraquat-induced acute kidney injury (AKI), significant concurrent proteinuria may alter diagnostic thresholds for diagnosis and prognosis to an unknown extent. This study evaluated the effect of albuminuria on biomarker cutoffs for diagnosis and outcome prediction.Methods: This was a multi-centre prospective clinical study of patients following acute paraquat self-poisoning in 5 Sri Lankan hospitals. Biomarker concentrations were quantified using ELISA and microbead assays and correlated with urinary albumin. Functional-AKI was defined by the Acute Kidney Injury Network serum creatinine definition and alternatively by a ≥50% increase in serum cystatin C. Albuminuria was defined as albumin-creatinine ratio >30 mg/g. The study outcomes were compared with a retrospective analysis of a pre-clinical study of paraquat-induced nephrotoxicity with appropriate controls.Results: Albuminuria was detected in 34 of 50 patients, and increased with functional-AKI severity. The concentrations of uNGAL, uCysC, uClusterin, uβ2M, and uKIM-1 were higher in albuminuric compared to non-albuminuric patients (p < 0.001). Albuminuria correlated with biomarker concentration (r > 0.6, p < 0.01) and was associated with death (p = 0.006). Optimal biomarker cutoffs for prediction of death were higher in the albuminuric group. Similar outcomes with more detailed analysis were obtained in experimental paraquat nephrotoxicity.Conclusion: Albuminuria was associated with paraquat-induced nephrotoxicity and increased excretion of low-molecular weight protein biomarkers. AKI biomarker cutoffs for diagnosis, outcome prediction and AKI stratification increased in the presence of albuminuria. Climate change is occurring and not being mitigated, motivating adaptation but adaptation strategies can have biophysical, economic, technological, and social limits. We review publicly available documents to assess how successful current and proposed adaptation strategies may be for the Australian Alps, including likely limits and potential collaborations and conflicts among stakeholders. Conservation managers, the tourism industry, and local communities have implemented or are proposing a range of adaptation strategies in the region. Some stakeholder strategies complement each other (e.g. invasive species control, fire management), while others are potential sources of conflict (water and electricity for snowmaking, year-round tourism). Economic costs and biophysical constraints are the most important limits to these adaptation strategies. These types of limits and conflicts between different stakeholders on adaptation strategies are likely to occur in other regions and demonstrate that adaptation may only provide partial and short term solutions to the challenges of climate change. In the case R v. Iby, the New South Wales born alive rule is examined in regards to newborn babies who show any signs of life.

Tourism in ski resorts depends on snow cover which is expected to decline with climate change. This paper explores hypotheses about demand side responses to climatic change by analyzing patterns of visitation in recent years with differing snow cover. Snow cover and visitation patterns to six resorts which differ in altitude and size in Victoria, Australia, were compared between a slightly warm and much drier year (2006, +0.6°C and -50% precipitation to longer-term averages) to a more typical year (2007) and to nine earlier years. Snowmaking partly offset declines in natural snow cover in 2006, although there were still fewer days with snow on the ground. The number of visitor days was much lower in 2006 than the previous nine years for the three lowest-altitude resorts (-69%), while it actually increased (+10%) in the highest altitude resort where there were fewer visitors (-17%), but they stayed longer. Snowmaking is already critical for ski resorts in low snow years. With warmer conditions, lower-altitude resorts may not receive enough income due to reduced visitation to offset snowmaking costs, while higher-altitude resorts may have a short-term gain, but become uneconomical in the longer term. The Australian Alps, which are of high conservation value, are popular summer bushwalking destinations. Experimental trampling trials using a standardized methodology were conducted to determine the resistance and resilience of the two common vegetation types: tall alpine herbfield and subalpine grasslands. Vegetation parameters were measured in lanes subject to control (no trampling), 30, 100, 200, 500 and 700 passes at five sites prior to trampling, immediately post trampling, 2weeks, 6weeks and 1year post trampling. Vegetation height, cover of graminoids and herbs, as well as net species richness all declined with trampling, while litter cover increased. Thresholds for damage varied between the two communities and among the different vegetation parameters. The resistance indices for the two communities (number of passes resulting in 50% reduction in vegetation cover), however, were similar at around 440–450 passes indicating that these two communities are among the most resistant of the 19 alpine–subalpine communities that have been tested around the world, but only of moderate resistance compared to non-alpine communities. The two communities showed limited recovery with damage still evident 1year post trampling. Although humans are a major mechanism for short and long distance seed dispersal, there is limited research testing clothing as a vector. The effect of different types of material (sports vs hiking socks), or different items of clothing (boots, socks, laces vs legs) or the same item (socks) worn in different places on seed composition were assessed in Kosciuszko National Park, Australia. Data was analyzed using Repeated Measures ANOVA, independent and paired t-tests, Multi-dimensional Scaling Ordinations and Analysis of Similarity. A total of 24,776 seeds from 70 taxa were collected from the 207 pieces of clothing sampled, with seed identified from 31 native and 19 non-native species. Socks worn off-track collected more native seeds while those worn on roadsides collected more non-native seeds. Sports socks collected a greater diversity of seeds and more native seeds than hiking socks. Boots, uncovered socks and laces collect more seeds than covered socks and laces, resulting in 17% fewer seeds collected when wearing trousers. With seeds from over 179 species (134 recognized weeds) collected on clothing in this, and nine other studies, it is clear that clothing contributes to unintended human mediated seed dispersal, including for many invasive species. The article analyzes the relationship of John Dunmore Lang, described as the chaplain of pandemonium, with British radicals. Lang also attempted to promote a scheme for cotton production in the Moreton Bay district of New South Wales to middle class British radicals and liberals like the leaders of the Manchester Chamber of commerce and the Anti-Corn Law League for the improvement of his adopted home's economy. Lang's meeting with Richard Cobden and John Bright was a result of his visits in Great Britain.

The perspectives of residents are brought together in this assembly of statements concerning the management of hexachlorobenzene waste in Botany, a southeastern suburb of Sydney. The paper indicates how residents have responded as participants in public participation exercises, and the contribution made by lay experts in the search for a negotiated solution to the problems of legacy wastes. Resident comments on the role of independent scientific experts, on legal liability, and on the State Government sponsored Commission of Inquiry, indicate the deficit of resources faced by the local community.
