1. The Problematic Past in the Work of Charles Sheeler, 1917–1927.

Abstract

This article examines the place of the past in Charles Sheeler's photographs and paintings made in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, around 1917, in New York City during the 1920s, and in the short film of New York, Manhatta (1921), which he made with the photographer Paul Strand. It situates these works in the context of the scholarship on Sheeler and on the art of New York in the early twentieth century, in particular that of the Ashcan School and of visual representation which attends to the architectural fabric of the city in preference to depicting its inhabitants. The article argues that although the scholarship has identified Sheeler's interest in making connections with the American past, it has not recognized the fraught nature of that relationship. By looking at the Doylestown and New York pictures, the analysis demonstrates how the problematic status of the past for Sheeler appears in these works as hauntings and absences. This article examines the relationship between the painters Frederic Edwin Church and Martin Johnson Heade, and the author Theodore Winthrop at a time when all three were tenants of the Tenth Street Studio building in New York City and Church was completing his important painting, The Heart of the Andes (1859). The article examines the close intellectual relationship between Church and Winthrop, who wrote a pamphlet to explicate Church's painting. The association of Winthrop's ardent nationalism and belief in American expansionism with this understanding of art as a moral practice is analysed and related to current interpretations of mid-century landscape. A discussion of Winthrop's 1861 novel, Cecil Dreeme, as a fictionalized account of the complexity of debates in the Tenth Street Studios leads into an analysis of The Heart of the Andes, which identifies complexities and ambivalences in the painting that put it partly outside the moral position. A comparison of The Heart of the Andes and Heade's 1859 painting Approaching Thunderstorm suggests Heade's opposition to Church's work as moral example. The article concludes by situating these positions and debates within influential accounts of US culture after the Civil War and arguing that the three-way conversation between its protagonists that began in 1859 exemplifies some of the tensions characteristic of attitudes to the arts in the society that went to war. 3. Trends in Perinatal HIV Prevention in New York City, 1994-2003.

Abstract

Objectives. We examined trends in perinatal HIV prevention interventions in New York City implemented during 1994 to 2003 to ascertain the success of the interventions in reducing perinatal transmission. Methods. We used data obtained from infant records at 22 hospitals. We used multiple logistic regression to analyze factors associated with prenatal care and perinatal HIV transmission. Results. We analyzed data for 4729 perinatally HIV-exposed singleton births. Of mothers with prenatal care data, 92% had prenatal care. The overall proportion who received prenatal care and were diagnosed with HIV before delivery was 86% in 1994 to 1996 and 90% in 1997 to 2003. Use of prenatal antiretrovirals among mothers who received prenatal care was 63% in 1994 to 1996 and 82% in 1997 to 2003. From 1994 to 2003, cesarean births among the entire sample increased from 15% to 55%. During 1997 to 2003, the perinatal HIV transmission rate among the entire sample was 7%; 45% of mothers of infected infants had missed opportunities for perinatal HIV prevention. During 1997 to 2003, maternal illicit drug use was significantly associated with lack of prenatal care. Lack of prenatal, intrapartum, and neonatal antiretrovirals; maternal illicit drug use; and low birthweight were significantly associated with perinatal HIV transmission. Conclusions. Interventions for perinatal HIV prevention can successfully decrease HIV transmission rates. Ongoing perinatal HIV surveillance allows for monitoring the implementation of guidelines to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV and determining factors that may contribute to perinatal HIV transmission. Abstract

This article focuses on the portrayal of suburban women in the works of Maeve Brennan, a short story writer. Brennan seems an ideal figure to appeal to a suburban woman hoping to catch a glimpse of midcentury urban glamour. In her essay "The Last Days of New York," Brennan describes a view from the window of her hotel room on Washington Square. Brennan's essays, criticized as demure and two-dimensional, were addressing some of the most significant issues affecting urban life at midcentury: the rupture of neighborhoods in the era of Moses and Jacobs, the plight of New Yorkers losing their homes to the bulldozer and the demise of the residential hotel. Brennan's work addresses the significance of the hotel for women in the first half of the twentieth century. Her work also foretells, however unwittingly, the homeless crisis of the 1980s. In her essay "The Last Days of New York," Brennan writes of watching a demolition from her office on the twentieth floor of a midtown building, presumably the offices of New Yorker on Forty-third Street.

This essay is interested in the role that destruction and undoing play in the work of the American Ashcan painter George Bellows, and in the relation of these things to the perception of memory and the past. It charts the vivid love affair with destruction in a series of four paintings Bellows made between 1907 and 1909. The excavations for a new Pennsylvania Station building in mid-town Manhattan fascinated and horrified New Yorkers, and Bellows responded to the compelling spectacle it provided with what has been called the first ‘great drama’ of his career. In the excavation series and particularly in Excavation at Night (1908, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art), Bellows offers us an image of destruction as a fantasy of remaking the vanished past. ‘Decreation’ in the sense the term is used by Giorgio Agamben in Potentialities (1999), and the Freudian concept of ‘undoing’, provide a way into these meanings. Abstract

Introduction: The response to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic in New York City (NYC) included unprecedented support from the DoD-a response limited primarily to medical and public health response on domestic soil with intact infrastructure. This study seeks to identify the common perspectives, experiences, and challenges of DoD personnel participating in this historic response.Materials and Methods: This is a phenomenological qualitative study of 16 military health care providers who deployed to NYC in March 2020. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board at the USU (No. DBS.2020.123). All participants served on either the United States Naval Ship Comfort or at the Javits Center. We conducted semi-structured interviews exploring the participants' experiences while deployed to NYC. These interview scripts were then independently coded by five research team members.Results: We identified four common themes and 12 subthemes from the participants' responses. The themes (subthemes) were lack of preparation (unfamiliar mission and inadequate resources); confusion about integration with civilian health care (widespread, dynamic situation, and NYC overwhelmed), communication challenges (overall, misunderstanding and miscommunication resulting in tension, and patient handoffs); and adaptation and success (general, military-civilian liaison service, positive experience, and military support necessity).Conclusions: This study provides unique insight into the DoD's initial response to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic in NYC. Using this experiential feedback from the DoD's pandemic responders could aid planners in improving the rapidity, effectiveness, and safety of military and civilian health care system integrations that may arise in the future. Abstract

In this study, correlates of HIV sexual protective behavior, in the form of condom use, were examined within a population of urban women identified as at increased heterosexual risk for HIV infection. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to analyze data collected via structured interviews for 187 Puerto Rican women recruited from the waiting areas of a comprehensive health clinic in the Bronx, New York. Increased condom use with primary partners was associated with higher levels of mastery, more non-Hispanic acculturation, and greater adherence to traditional female gender roles. Increased condom use with nonprimary partners was associated with higher HIV/AIDS prevention self-efficacy. Thus, primary versus nonprimary relationships appeared to represent distinct contexts for HIV sexual risk behavior, with implications for different intervention strategies based upon relationship contexts for Latina women.
