The article reports on a study of orf virus infection in humans that occurred in New York, Illinois, California, and Tennessee during 2004-2005. The zoonotic parapoxvirus is often identified after contact with animals such as sheep or goats. The four cases describe the skin lesions and treatment. The CDC editorial note discusses identifying parapoxvirus by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. The recommended measures for preventing the transmission of orf virus to humans are barrier protection and hand washing. The similarity of orf virus infection to cutaneous anthrax is mentioned.
