The article presents information on the statistics related to the number of handicapped children in foster care units in the United States. A survey related to children generic in foster care was conducted in 1960. The survey showed that Minnesota relies heavily on county child welfare services to identify and make foster care placements and has high number of generic foster care placements of children with mental retardation. Michigan has a regional mental retardation program with specialized family foster care arrangements for children and adults with mental retardation. New York City showed increased number of drugs-addicted babies, and young children with pediatric AIDS while New York State showed decreased number of children in foster care from 1980-1985.
