Formative assessment has been long emphasised as a powerful means for enhancing science learning. However, there is still a lack of research to investigate the impacts of formative assessment on both students' motivational beliefs and behaviours in science learning. This study examined such impacts using data from six Western and six East Asian countries/economies in PISA 2015. 96,491 15-year-old students were included. The SEM analysis of overall data showed that (i) formative assessment had both direct effects on students' science learning behaviours and indirect impacts mediated by students' motivational beliefs and (ii) the total effect of teacher feedback on science learning behaviours was greater than adaptive instruction. The comparison between Western and East Asian datasets indicated that (i) the impact of teacher feedback on East Asian students' motivational beliefs was greater than that on their Western counterparts; (ii) the impact of adaptive instruction on Western students' motivational beliefs was greater than that on East Asian counterparts; and (iii) the direct impacts of teacher feedback and adaptive instruction on science learning behaviours were similar for both groups of students. Suggestions were made on how to effectively implement formative assessment to enhance science learning in different cultural contexts.

Science education researchers and curriculum documents have advocated scientific inquiry for more than six decades; however, inconsistent findings concerning its effects on students' learning outcomes have been revealed in recent analyses of large-scale international assessment data (e.g., the Programme for International Student Assessment [PISA]). This has evoked considerable concern given the significant role that inquiry plays in science education. To unpack the complex influence of inquiry on science achievement, this study used the PISA 2015 data from eight Western or East Asian regions to explore the effects of inquiry on students' science achievement and the mediation of attitudes toward science. The results indicated that despite the negative effects that the investigation aspect of inquiry had on science achievement, the explanation aspect of inquiry had positive effects on science achievement for the Western, East Asian, and whole samples. When all of the effects of both the investigation and explanation aspects were integrated, the overall influence of inquiry on students' science achievement was found to be positive for the whole and East Asian samples and slightly negative for the Western sample. This study highlights the necessity of considering different facets of inquiry and different types of effects when investigating the effects of inquiry on science achievement and achieving a better balance between the investigation and explanation processes when implementing inquiry in school classrooms.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the radix of Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels (RAS) is mainly used to replenish and invigorate the blood circulation. This study investigated anti-platelet aggregation activities were used by New Zealand rabbits, and high-performance liquid chromatography data were obtained to determine the spectrum–effect relationship for different commercial grades of RAS. Plasma and urine metabolites were examined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry-based metabolomics to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the role of these metabolites in a rat model of blood deficiency (BD). Plasma and spleen metabolites were additionally examined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography plus Q-Exactive tandem mass spectrometry-based lipidomics to clarify the mechanisms of RAS in treating BD. The third grade of RAS exhibited the best activity in replenishing and invigorating blood in vitro and in vivo. Ferulic acid, ligustilide, senkyunolide I, uridine, and guanine are quality markers of anti-platelet aggregation activity. Based on the metabolomics results, 19 potential biomarkers were screened in plasma, and 12 potential metabolites were detected in urine. In lipidomics analyses, 73 potential biomarkers were screened in plasma, and 112 potential biomarkers were screened in the spleen. RAS may restore lipid metabolism by regulating disorders of glycerophospholipid and sphingolipid metabolism, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, amino acid metabolism (thereby improving energy metabolism), and arachidonic acid metabolism (thereby promoting blood circulation). These results provide a deeper understanding of the effects of different grades of RAS and a scientific reference for the establishment of grading standards and for the clinical use of RAS. Simple Summary: Swainsonine-containing plants are a poisonous plant widely distributed in grasslands around the world, poisoning by it can cause livestock deaths and economic losses to herdsmen. We have developed a sustained-release injection for the prevention of poisoning by swainsonine-containing plants. Compared to other formulation, e.g., powders and pills, injections have the advantage of convenient administration with easy dosage control. The injection uses poloxamer as the sustained-release matrix and can be solidified into a gel at physiological temperature. We have shown that this formulation is safe and can maintain an effective blood drug concentration for up to 5 days, providing a new approach for preventing swainsonine-containing plants poisoning livestock. Swainsonine-containing plants contain swainsonine which has been shown to cause neurological signs and pathological changes in farm animals. It causes a large number of livestock poisonings every year resulting in economic losses to the livestock industry. At present, "Jifang E" is used in the prevention of swainsonine-containing plants poisoning livestock, and the preventive effects have been well-documented. However, "Jifang E" is typically administered in drinking water, making it difficult to control the administered dosage, because of feeding difficulties and it may cause certain side effects that are unique to the water-dissolved powder. To overcome these difficulties, we developed a temperature-sensitive gel for injection and the optimal ratio of each formula of sustained-release injection is P407 (24%), P188 (6%), Vitamin C (1%), PEG4000 (0.5%), and "Jifang E" (10%). Our results suggest that novel formulation makes the micellar system more stable and the particles are uniformly dispersed. Colloidal morphological studies showed that each group formed a homogeneous pore structure after gelling, and the structure became more dense with the addition of "Jifang E". The rheological study shows that "Jifang E" is a pseudoplastic fluid, and the addition of "Jifang E" reduces the viscosity of the formula, which is beneficial to the injection. In vitro and in vivo release rate studies have shown that the effective concentration of "Jifang E" can be maintained for 3 to 5 days. The acute toxicity test in SPF Kunming mice showed that its LD50 was 828.323 mg/kg, with confidence limits of 676.706–1013.911 mg/kg, which is a safe dosage (LD50 > 200 mg/kg). There were no observed reactions of muscle irritation or subcutaneous tissue irritation with the dosage used for New Zealand rabbits. In summary, we successfully developed the sustained-release injection formulation of "Jifang E" for the prevention of swainsonine-containing plants poisoning livestock, which provides the basis for subsequent field extension trials and the further study of its detoxification mechanism. Phytophthora species are notorious plant pathogens, with some causing devastating tree diseases that threaten the survival of their host species. One such example is Phytophthora agathidicida, the causal agent of kauri dieback – a root and trunk rot disease that kills the ancient, iconic and culturally significant tree species, Agathis australis (New Zealand kauri). A deeper understanding of how Phytophthora pathogens infect their hosts and cause disease is critical for the development of effective treatments. Such an understanding can be gained by interrogating pathogen genomes for effector genes, which are involved in virulence or pathogenicity. Although genome sequencing has become more affordable, the complete assembly of Phytophthora genomes has been problematic, particularly for those with a high abundance of repetitive sequences. Therefore, effector genes located in repetitive regions could be truncated or missed in a fragmented genome assembly. Using a combination of long-read PacBio sequences, chromatin conformation capture (Hi-C) and Illumina short reads, we assembled the P. agathidicida genome into ten complete chromosomes, with a genome size of 57 Mb including 34% repeats. This is the first Phytophthora genome assembled to chromosome level and it reveals a high level of syntenic conservation with the complete genome of Peronospora effusa, the only other completely assembled genome sequence of an oomycete. All P. agathidicida chromosomes have clearly defined centromeres and contain candidate effector genes such as RXLRs and CRNs, but in different proportions, reflecting the presence of gene family clusters. Candidate effector genes are predominantly found in genepoor, repeat-rich regions of the genome, and in some cases showed a high degree of duplication. Analysis of candidate RXLR effector genes that occur in multicopy gene families indicated half of them were not expressed in planta. Candidate CRN effector gene families showed evidence of transposonmediated recombination leading to new combinations of protein domains, both within and between chromosomes. Further analysis of this complete genome assembly will help inform new methods of disease control against P. agathidicida and other Phytophthora species, ultimately helping decipher how Phytophthora pathogens have evolved to shape their effector repertoires and how they might adapt in the future. Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), especially aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, is a serious cerebrovascular disease with high mortality and morbidity. However, there is no effective treatment in clinics. In recent years, more and more studies have shown that early brain injury (EBI) may be an important reason for poor prognosis of SAH. Explore the mechanism of early brain injury after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). In this study, 20 male New Zealand white rabbits were selected and divided into the experimental group and sham operation group, with 10 rabbits in each group. The neurobehavioral scores, food intake, and cerebral perfusion parameters, cerebral blood volume (CBV), cerebral blood flow velocity (CBF), ET-1, IL-1, and IL-6, in rabbit plasma were compared. The food intake scores and neurological dysfunction scores of the experimental group at 1 h, 6 h, 24 h, and 72 h after modeling were higher than those of the sham operation group, which had a statistical significance (P < 0.05). The dysfunction scores all showed a gradual decrease; the CBV and CBF values of the experimental group at 1 h, 6 h, 24 h, and 72 h after modeling were all lower than those of the sham operation group, which had a statistical significance (P < 0.05), and the MTT values were all higher than that of the sham operation group, which had a statistical significance (P < 0.05). The TTP values of rats in the experimental group were higher than those in the sham operation group at 6 h, 24 h, and 72 h after modeling (P < 0.05), the experimental group was in the modeling. The levels of serum ET-1, IL-1, and IL-6 at 1 h, 6 h, 24 h, and 72 h were higher than those in the sham operation group, which had a statistical significance (P < 0.05). New Zealand white rabbits can have brain perfusion volume disorder, inflammatory reaction, and cerebral vasospasm in the early stage after SAH, and brain injury can appear in the early stage. New Zealand kauri is an ancient, iconic, gymnosperm tree species that is under threat from a lethal dieback disease caused by the oomycete Phytophthora agathidicida. To gain insight into this pathogen, we determined whether proteinaceous effectors of P. agathidicida interact with the immune system of a model angiosperm, Nicotiana, as previously shown for Phytophthora pathogens of angiosperms. From the P. agathidicida genome, we defined and analysed a set of RXLR effectors, a class of proteins that typically have important roles in suppressing or activating the plant immune system. RXLRs were screened for their ability to activate or suppress the Nicotiana plant immune system using Agrobacterium tumefaciens transient transformation assays. Nine P. agathidicida RXLRs triggered cell death or suppressed plant immunity in Nicotiana, of which three were expressed in kauri. For the most highly expressed, P. agathidicida (Pa) RXLR24, candidate cognate immune receptors associated with cell death were identified in Nicotiana benthamiana using RNA silencing‐based approaches. Our results show that RXLRs of a pathogen of gymnosperms can interact with the immune system of an angiosperm species. Artificial intelligence (AI) emphasises the creation of intelligent machines/systems that function like humans. AI has been applied to many real-world applications. Machine learning is a branch of AI based on the idea that systems can learn from data, identify hidden patterns, and make decisions with little/minimal human intervention. Evolutionary computation is an umbrella of population-based intelligent/learning algorithms inspired by nature, where New Zealand has a good international reputation. This paper provides a review on evolutionary machine learning, i.e. evolutionary computation techniques for major machine learning tasks such as classification, regression and clustering, and emerging topics including combinatorial optimisation, computer vision, deep learning, transfer learning, and ensemble learning. The paper also provides a brief review of evolutionary learning applications, such as supply chain and manufacturing for milk/dairy, wine and seafood industries, which are important to New Zealand. Summary: Dothistroma needle blight is one of the most devastating pine tree diseases worldwide. New and emerging epidemics have been frequent over the last 25 years, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, where they are in part associated with changing weather patterns. One of the main Dothistroma needle blight pathogens, Dothistroma septosporum, has a global distribution but most molecular plant pathology research has been confined to Southern Hemisphere populations that have limited genetic diversity. Extensive genomic and transcriptomic data are available for a D. septosporum reference strain from New Zealand, where an introduced clonal population of the pathogen predominates. Due to the global importance of this pathogen, we determined whether the genome of this reference strain is representative of the species worldwide by sequencing the genomes of 18 strains sampled globally from different pine hosts. Genomic polymorphism shows substantial variation within the species, clustered into two distinct groups of strains with centres of diversity in Central and South America. A reciprocal chromosome translocation uniquely identifies the New Zealand strains. Globally, strains differ in their production of the virulence factor dothistromin, with extremely high production levels in strain ALP3 from Germany. Comparisons with the New Zealand reference revealed that several strains are aneuploids; for example, ALP3 has duplications of three chromosomes. Increased gene copy numbers therefore appear to contribute to increased production of dothistromin, emphasizing that studies of population structure are a necessary adjunct to functional analyses of genetic polymorphisms to identify the molecular basis of virulence in this important forest pathogen. We report the mitochondrial genome of Sabella spallanzanii, an invasive Mediterranean sabellid introduced to Australia and New Zealand. The mitogenome is 15,581 bp long and consists of 38 genes, including 13 protein coding genes, two rRNA genes, and 23 tRNA genes. It shows deviations from the putative annelid ground pattern, such as gene order re-arrangements and regions encoding on the negative strand. It is, however, very different from the mitogenome of the closely related serpulid, Spirobranchus giganteus. Phylogenetic analyses of the mitochondrial genes support a sister relationship of Sabella spallanzanii and Spirobranchus giganteus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The hard tick Haemaphysalis longicornis (Ixodidae) is widely distributed in East Asia, China, Australia and New Zealand. It can transmit many infectious pathogens, including the causative agents of human rickettsiosis, bovine theileriosis, bovine babesiosis and canine babesiosis. Therefore, a greater understanding of H. longicornis biology might aid in the development of more effective control measures against the tick and tick-borne pathogens. Methods: We analyzed the expression of miR-184 in different developmental stages and various tissues of H. longicornis using real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Antagomir (Ant-184) was used to knock-down miR-184, whilst Ms-Ant and non-injected ticks were used as the negative and blank controls, respectively. We used online software tools (RNAhybrid and TargetScan) to predict the putative target genes of miR-184. Results: The expression of miR-184 was highest in unfed nymphs and lowest in unfed larvae. The tissue distribution of miR-184 showed abundant expression in the midgut. To investigate the probable roles of miR-184, antagomir (Ant-184) was used to knock-down miR-184 (t(4) = 12.32, P = 0.0002). After inhibiting miR-184, other biological factors were examined in each group. The engorged body weight was significantly reduced in the treated group (Ant-184) in contrast to control groups (t(22) = 2.19, P = 0.0388). The mean duration of the egg-laying days was significantly increased (33.5 ± 1.91) and the number of eggs (t(10) = 3.147, P = 0.0137), and egg mass (t(10) = 3.4472, P = 0.0063) were significantly reduced in the treated group. During oviposition, eggs were monitored and in half of the ticks of the Ant-184 group the eggs were completely desiccated, lacked embryo development and did not hatch. We analyzed the expression of Vg proteins (Vg1, Vg2, Vg3) in semi-engorged ticks, engorged ticks, ticks at day 2 after engorgement and egg stage in Ant-184, non-injected and Ms-Ant groups, and found significant variation. Conclusions: This study provides information on the role of miR-184 in H. longicornis ticks. The data suggest that miR-184 targets Vg proteins and affects blood digestion and oviposition. To compare the diagnostic accuracy of parameters derived from the histogram analysis of precontrast, 10-min hepatobiliary phase (HBP) and 20-min HBP T1 maps for staging liver fibrosis (LF). LF was induced in New Zealand white rabbits by subcutaneous injections of carbon tetrachloride for 4–16 weeks (n = 120), and 20 rabbits injected with saline served as controls. Precontrast, 10-min and 20-min HBP modified Look-Locker inversion recovery (MOLLI) T1 mapping was performed. Histogram analysis of T1 maps was performed, and the mean, median, skewness, kurtosis, entropy, inhomogeneity and 10th/25th/75th/90th percentiles of T1 native , T1 10min and T1 20min were derived. Quantitative histogram parameters were compared. For significant parameters, further receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were performed to evaluate the potential diagnostic performance in differentiating LF stages. Finally, 17, 20, 21, 21 and 20 rabbits were included for the F0, F1, F2, F3, and F4 pathological grades of fibrosis, respectively. The mean/75th of T1 native , entropy of T1 10min and entropy/mean/median/10th of T1 20min demonstrated a significant good correlation with the LF stage (| r | = 0.543–0.866, all P < 0.05). The 75th of T1 native , entropy 10min , and entropy 20min were the three most reliable imaging markers in reflecting the stage of LF. The area under the ROC curve of entropy 20min was larger than that of entropy 10min (P < 0.05 for LF ≥ F2, ≥F3, and ≥ F4) and the 75th of T1 native (P < 0.05 for LF ≥ F2 and ≥ F3) for staging LF.
