The article describes the laboratory investigation and confirmation of the atypical scrapie/Nor98 in a sheep in New Zealand. Ruminants are susceptible to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) or prion diseases such as scrapie in sheep and goats. Abnormal prion protein was discovered in the cerebellar and cerebral cortex, indicating true anatominal diversity. Comparing matched cerebellum and brainstem samples was the only way to determine the prevalence of anatomical distribution.
