This study is a conceptual replication of Ellis' 'Measuring implicit and explicit knowledge of a second language: A psychometric study', published in "Studies in Second Language Acquisition" (2005), aiming to establish the importance of including belief statements (hypothesized to increase processing demands) in the design of Elicited Imitation (EI) tests. In a between-groups comparison, 103 participants completed one of two versions of Erlam's EI test (2006), one which required participants to make a 'belief' judgement, and one which did not. Both contained ungrammatical stimuli. Participants were scored for repetition of grammatical stimuli and correction of ungrammatical stimuli. An Exit questionnaire aimed to establish how aware they were of ungrammatical stimuli. Participants also completed a timed grammaticality judgement test (TGJT), an untimed grammaticality judgement test (UGJT), a metalinguistic knowledge test (MKT), and another Elicited Imitation (EI) test designed as a measure of global proficiency. Performance on each EI version was examined in relationship to performance on these measures. There was no variation between performance on either EI test version. The article underscores the need for ongoing research investigating design features of EI tests.

Although understandings of scientific inquiry (as opposed to conducting inquiry) are included in science education reform documents around the world, little is known about what students have learned about inquiry during their elementary school years. This is partially due to the lack of any assessment instrument to measure understandings about scientific inquiry. However, a valid and reliable assessment has recently been developed and published, Views About Scientific Inquiry (VASI; Lederman et al. [2014], Journal of Research in Science Teaching, 51, 65-83). The purpose of this large-scale international project was to collect the first baseline data on what beginning middle school students have learned about scientific inquiry during their elementary school years. Eighteen countries/regions spanning six continents including 2,634 students participated in the study. The participating countries/regions were: Australia, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, England, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Mainland China, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United States. In many countries, science is not formally taught until middle school, which is the rationale for choosing seventh grade students for this investigation. This baseline data will simultaneously provide information on what, if anything, students learn about inquiry in elementary school, as well as their beginning knowledge as they enter secondary school. It is important to note that collecting data from all of the approximately 200 countries globally was not humanly possible, and it was also not possible to collect data from every region of each country. The results overwhelmingly show that students around the world at the beginning of grade seven have very little understandings about scientific inquiry. Some countries do show reasonable understandings in certain aspects but the overall picture of understandings of scientific inquiry is not what is hoped for after completing 6 years of elementary education in any country.

The first time of many significant encounters is the most intense, raising awkwardness, anxiety and hope. This article presents data from doctoral students (n = 80) who described the first time that they submitted writing to their supervisor and received feedback. The first writing/feedback exchange is an initiation into the cultures of academia. Student accounts captured the intensity of the initiation for students, excitement or dread on submitting writing, with increased emotional reaction when going through the feedback process, that liminal first time. Close focus on the first-time writing feedback exchange makes a contribution to the literature on the social interactions of doctoral writing. Data backs our argument that students and supervisors need to carefully manage the first-time exchange of writing. Our findings are analysed thematically and through an autoethnographic lens of the lead author, who was both a research assistant for the research survey and an international doctoral student experiencing the same processes in his cross-disciplinary joint doctorate. We draw on conceptual threshold-crossing theories established in regard to doctoral learning.

Keratoconus, a disorder characterized by corneal thinning and weakening, results in vision loss. Corneal crosslinking (CXL) can halt the progression of keratoconus. The development of accelerated corneal crosslinking (A-CXL) protocols to shorten the treatment time has been hampered by the rapid depletion of stromal oxygen when higher UVA intensities are used, resulting in a reduced cross-linking effect. It is therefore imperative to develop better methods to increase the oxygen concentration within the corneal stroma during the A-CXL process. Photocatalytic oxygen-generating nanomaterials are promising candidates to solve the hypoxia problem during A-CXL. Biocompatible graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) quantum dots (QDs)-based oxygen self-sufficient platforms including g-C3N4 QDs and riboflavin/g-C3N4 QDs composites (RF@g-C3N4 QDs) have been developed in this study. Both display excellent photocatalytic oxygen generation ability, high reactive oxygen species (ROS) yield, and excellent biosafety. More importantly, the A-CXL effect of the g-C3N4 QDs or RF@g-C3N4 QDs composite on male New Zealand white rabbits is better than that of the riboflavin 5'-phosphate sodium (RF) A-CXL protocol under the same conditions, indicating excellent strengthening of the cornea after A-CXL treatments. These lead us to suggest the potential application of g-C3N4 QDs in A-CXL for corneal ectasias and other corneal diseases. The Cecum is a key site for cellulose digestion in nutrient metabolism of intestine, but its mechanisms of microbial and gene interactions has not been fully elucidated during pathogenesis of obesity. Therefore, the cecum tissues of the New Zealand rabbits and their contents between the high-fat diet-induced group (Ob) and control group (Co) were collected and analyzed using multi-omics. The metagenomic analysis indicated that the relative abundances of Corallococcus_sp._CAG:1435 and Flavobacteriales bacterium species were significantly lower, while those of Akkermansia glycaniphila, Clostridium_sp._CAG:793, Mycoplasma_sp._CAG:776, Mycoplasma_sp._CAG:472, Clostridium_sp._CAG:609, Akkermansia_sp._KLE1605, Clostridium_sp._CAG:508, and Firmicutes_bacterium_CAG:460 species were significantly higher in the Ob as compared to those in Co. Transcriptomic sequencing results showed that the differentially upregulated genes were mainly enriched in pathways, including calcium signaling pathway, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, and Wnt signaling pathway, while the differentially downregulated genes were mainly enriched in pathways of NF-kappaB signaling pathway and T cell receptor signaling pathway. The comparative analysis of metabolites showed that the glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism and cysteine and methionine metabolism were the important metabolic pathways between the two groups. The combined analysis showed that CAMK1, IGFBP6, and IGFBP4 genes were highly correlated with Clostridium_sp._CAG:793, and Akkermansia_glycaniphila species. Thus, the preliminary study elucidated the microbial and gene interactions in cecum of obese rabbit and provided a basis for further studies in intestinal intervention for human obesity. Background: Data on trends in the epidemiological burden of bipolar disorder are scarce. Aims: To provide an overview of trends in bipolar disorder burden from 1990 to 2019. Method: Revisiting the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we analysed the number of cases, calculated the age-standardised rate (per 100 000 population) and estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of incidence, prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) for bipolar disorder from 1990 to 2019. The independent effects of age, period and cohort were estimated by the age–period–cohort modelling. Results: Globally, the bipolar disorder-related prevalent cases, incident cases and number of YLDs all increased from 1990 to 2019. Regionally, the World Health Organization Region of the Americas accounted for the highest estimated YLD number and rate, with the highest age-standardised prevalence rate in 1990 and 2019 and highest EAPC of prevalence. By sociodemographic index (SDI) quintiles, all five SDI regions saw an increase in estimated incident cases. Nationally, New Zealand reported the highest age-standardised rate of incidence, prevalence and YLDs in 1990 and 2019. The most prominent age effect on incidence rate was in those aged 15–19 years. Decreased effects of period on incidence, prevalence and YLD rates was observed overall and in females, not in males. The incidence, prevalence and YLD rates showed an unfavourable trend in the younger cohorts born after 1990, with males reporting a higher cohort risk than females. Conclusions: From 1990 to 2019, the overall trend of bipolar disorder burden presents regional and national variations and differs by age, sex, period and cohort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cellulitis is a common acute skin and soft tissue infection that causes substantial morbidity and healthcare costs. Aims: To audit the impact on cellulitis management, regimen tolerability and outcomes of switching from outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) using intravenous (i.v.) cefazolin once daily plus probenecid to oral beta‐lactam therapy (OBLT) using oral flucloxacillin plus probenecid. Methods: We undertook a retrospective audit on cellulitis management, regimen tolerability and outcomes at the Dunedin Public Hospital Emergency Department (ED) before and after a change of the local outpatient cellulitis treatment pathway from OPAT using i.v. cefazolin once daily plus probenecid to OBLT using oral flucloxacillin plus probenecid. Results: OPAT was used in 97/123 (78.9%) patients with cellulitis before compared to 1/70 (1.4%) after the pathway change (odds ratio (OR), 0.04, P < 0.01). OBLT was used in 26/123 (21.1%) patients with cellulitis before and 69/70 (98.6%) after (OR, 218.8, P < 0.01). Antimicrobial change due to intolerance occurred in 4/123 (3.2%) patients with cellulitis before and 4/70 (5.7%) after (OR, 1.8, P, not significant (NS)) the pathway change. Inpatient admission within 28 days occurred in 15/123 (12.2%) cellulitis patients before and 9/70 (12.9%) after (OR, 1.1, P, NS) the pathway change. Conclusions: Implementation of a change in outpatient cellulitis treatment pathway resulted in a significant change in prescribing practice. Liquid storage tanks are widely used in the industrial and the agricultural production, the earthquake damage of the liquid storage tanks will not only lead to economic losses, but also may cause environmental pollution, fire and explosion. Considering the fluid–structure interaction, the liquid sloshing and the material nonlinearity, the three-dimensional numerical calculation models of nondamping and tuned mass damper (TMD) liquid storage tanks are established, respectively. The earthquake waves with different characteristics are selected to investigate the dynamic responses of the liquid storage tank, the control effects of the TMD on the seismic responses of the liquid storage tank are analyzed, and the influence law of the change of the spring stiffness on the damping effect is discussed. The results show that the TMD has a significant damping effect on the liquid storage tank, and the element damping has significant influence on the dynamic responses in the subsequent stage of the earthquake action. Under the action of Darfield–New Zealand wave, the damping ratio corresponding to the acceleration of the tank wall is 69.6%. When the element damping is not considered, the small change of the spring stiffness has significant influence on the damping effect, but after the element damping being considered, the influence of the spring stiffness change on the damping effect is small. Traditional particulate embolic agents are small in diameter, but can easily embolize the ends of blood vessels, resulting in ischemia and necrosis of normal tissues and organs. The metal spring embolic agent has a larger diameter, but it cannot be degraded and can easily cause permanent damage to blood vessels. Ideally, a bleeding embolism should achieve rapid hemostasis without causing long-term necrosis of organs and tissues. In this study, a modified sodium alginate hydrogel (MSAH) was prepared by mixing an oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) aqueous solution with a carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) aqueous solution at a ratio of 1:6 in a 38°C bath for 8 min. The feasibility of this modified hydrogel was then tested in an internal iliac artery hemorrhage model using New Zealand rabbits. The MSAH had good adhesion. The hydrogel was injected through a single curved 4F catheter without obvious effects on uterine smooth muscle cell proliferation and apoptosis. The blood flow of the internal iliac artery was restored by long-term degradation of the sodium alginate hydrogel, and no ischemia and necrosis were observed by histopathology. The MSAH prepared using a mixture of OSA and CMC had good adhesion, biocompatibility, and injectability and could be used for target-vessel embolization in an internal iliac artery hemorrhage model. The MSAH can achieve main artery embolization without affecting the peripheral artery blood supply, resulting in both short-term rapid hemostasis and long-term degradation, with no target organ necrosis. Participation in evidence-based parenting programs benefits parents and children, but these programs have limited reach. This study utilized a mixed-method design to investigate the parenting concerns and parenting program needs of Chinese immigrant parents in New Zealand. Parents (n = 159) were surveyed about their perceived levels of child adjustment problems, parenting confidence, and parenting risk and protective factors. Parents' knowledge and experience with parenting programs, and their program preferences were also examined. Eight Chinese parenting practitioners were interviewed about parenting challenges, parental concerns, and barriers to program participation of Chinese immigrant parents. Survey results showed that parents who gave their child higher ratings on behavior problems reported less parental self-efficacy, and more parental adjustment, family relationship, teamwork, and parenting difficulties. Parents' knowledge and experience of available parenting programs was low. Barriers to program participation included time constraints, lack of program awareness, cultural and language barriers, and no childcare provision. Parents indicated a preference for a range of delivery options including group-based, seminar, and individually tailored programs. Program features most likely to influence attendance were content that addresses personally relevant issues and children's self-development (such as coping with failure, managing negative emotions, and increasing confidence), and convenient location of program. Practitioners indicated that managing difficult child behavior and maintaining positive parent-child relationships were key parenting challenges. These concerns were linked to cultural expectations about child obedience, academic performance, and parent/grandparent relationships. Findings highlight program preferences that could be offered to meet Chinese immigrant parenting support needs and increase program participation. Lateral roots, including adventitious roots, are the main component of rapeseed roots with support, absorb, and synthesis functions and their morphological parameters directly affecting the plant's aboveground growth and yield. Root biomass, as a material base for lateral root growth, can be used as a link between plant phenotypes and their physiological processes, as well as to enhance root 3D growth model mechanisms and accuracy. To quantify the relationships between lateral root morphological indices and the corresponding organ biomass for rapeseed, we used two cultivars, NY 22 (conventional) and NZ 1818 (hybrid), and conducted cultivar and fertilizing cylindrical tube experiments during the 2016–2019, with two fertilizer levels, no fertilizer, and 180 kg N ha−1 fertilizer. The lateral root biomass and morphological parameters were determined during the whole growth period. The biomass‐based lateral root morphological parameter models were developed by analyzing the quantitative relationship between the lateral root morphological indices and their corresponding biomass, and the descriptive models were verified with independent experimental data. The results showed that the correlation (r) of simulated and observed values for the lateral root morphological parameters are all greater than 0.9 with significant levels at p < 0.001. The absolute values of the average absolute difference (da) of simulated and observed values for the lateral root length (LLR), lateral root average diameter (ADLR), lateral root surface area (SALR), and lateral root volume (VLR) are −30.408 cm, −0.003 mm, 12.902 cm2, and 0.039 cm3, respectively. The RMSE values are 175.183 cm, 0.010 mm, 59.710 cm2, and 1.513 cm3, respectively. The ratio of da to the average observed values (dap) for the LLR and VLR are all less than 5%, and the ADLR and SALR are all <6%. The models developed in this paper have good performance and reliability for predicting lateral root morphological parameters of rapeseed. The study provides a mechanistic method for linking the rapeseed growth model with the morphological model using corresponding organic biomass and laying a good foundation for establishing a 3D morphological model for rapeseed root system based on biomass. We estimate the effects of student loan access on educational attainment and labor market returns in New Zealand. We exploit the introduction of a national policy mandating a 50% pass rate for student loan renewals using a regression discontinuity design. Retaining loan access increases reenrollment for students around the threshold, and a majority eventually graduate with a bachelor's degree within seven years. We find that retaining student loan access leads to large labor market returns for struggling students. The additional debt from further borrowing is small relative to the earnings returns and declines quickly due to faster repayment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated degeneration of sensory neurons in the dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and trigeminal ganglia (TG) has been observed in non-human primates (NHPs) following intravenous (IV) and intrathecal (IT) delivery. Administration of recombinant AAV encoding a human protein transgene via a single intra-cisterna magna (ICM) injection in New Zealand white rabbits resulted in histopathology changes very similar to NHPs: mononuclear cell infiltration, degeneration/necrosis of sensory neurons, and nerve fiber degeneration of sensory tracts in the spinal cord and of multiple nerves. AAV-associated clinical signs and incidence/severity of histologic findings indicated that rabbits were equally or more sensitive than NHPs to sensory neuron damage. Another study using human and rabbit transgene constructs of the same protein demonstrated comparable changes suggesting that the effects are not an immune response to the non-self protein transgene. Rabbit has not been characterized as a species for general toxicity testing of AAV gene therapies, but these studies suggest that it may be an alternative model to investigate mechanisms of AAV-mediated neurotoxicity and test novel AAV designs mitigating these adverse effects. Friction stir welding (FSW) was introduced to join laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) AlSi10Mg alloys in this study. Microstructure and texture evolution, microhardness distribution and tensile properties of the FSW joints were investigated. The evolution of grain size, grain boundary and misorientation angles distribution, dynamic recrystallization and crystallographic texture in various regions of the FSW joint concerning base metal (BM), thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ), upper part of nugget zone (UPNZ) and low part of nugget zone (LPNZ) was characterized by using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD). The analysis reveals a strong texture evolution of shear components on the TMAZ, UPNZ and LPNZ as well as a fully recrystallized grain structure on the UPNZ and LPNZ. Additionally, a gradual evolution in Si-rich eutectic from continuous cellular networks in the BM to totally globularized particles in the UPNZ and LPNZ occurs in the FSW joint. The microhardness rapidly decreases to the TMAZ from the BM through heat affected zone (HAZ) reaching the lowest value of ∼65.0 HV at the TMAZ/NZ boundary. The FSW joint in LPBF AlSi10Mg alloys exhibits an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 247 MPa and an elongation-to-failure (EI) of 8.8%. The UTS of FSW joints is reduced compared to the BM, but the EI has been increased by 160%, implying an improvement in tensile ductility. Multiple surface treatment methods for titanium alloy prostheses, widely used in orthopedics, are available; however, these can affect bone integration and regeneration efficiency. In this study, through cell and animal experiments, we devised seven bone implant categories of Ti6Al4V based on surface preparation and post-processing technology (polishing, grit-blasting, fine titanium spraying, coarse titanium spraying, electron beam melting [EBM] printing, selective laser melting [SLM] printing, and post-processed SLM printing) and imaged each microscopic surface structure with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mechanical testing revealed excessive post-processing damaged the mechanical properties of the implants. In vitro, human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) were cultured with implants, and the morphology of the cells adhering to the implant surface was observed using SEM and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) semi-quantitatively determined cell activity, indirectly reflecting the proliferation of hBMSCs. Alizarin red and alkaline phosphatase experiments assessed osteogenic differentiation. In vivo, experiments utilized the New Zealand rabbit femoral condyle bone defect model to assess bone regeneration and integration using micro-computed tomography, Van Giesen staining, and Masson staining. We found that 3D-printed implants with regular pore structures were more conducive to hBMSC osteogenic differentiation, while the presence of metal powder on NPT-SLM-printed implants hindered such differentiation. The post-treatment SLM scaffold surface may have some residual semi-melted powder; however, these powder residues have no significant effect on cell activity and differentiation. Surface treatment (grit-blasting and titanium spraying) of planar structures can enhance hBMSC adhesion but does not necessarily promote their differentiation. The framework structure of 3D printing may affect the osteogenic differentiation of hBMSCs, and for SLM-printed implants, excessive pursuit of a "powderless" state will damage the mechanical properties of the implant. Background: Ketamine at subanaesthetic dosages (≤0.5mg/kg) exhibits rapid onset (over hours to days) antidepressant effects against major depressive disorder in people who are otherwise well. However, its safety, tolerability and efficacy are not known for major depressive disorder in people with advanced life-limiting illnesses. Objective: To determine the feasibility, safety, tolerability, acceptability and any antidepressant signal/activity to justify and inform a fully powered study of subcutaneous ketamine infusions for major depressive disorder in the palliative setting. Methods: This was a single arm, open-label, phase II feasibility study (Australian New Zealand Clinical Trial Registry Number—ACTRN12618001586202). We recruited adults (≥ 18-years-old) with advanced life-limiting illnesses referred to four palliative care services in Sydney, Australia, diagnosed with major depressive disorder from any care setting. Participants received weekly subcutaneous ketamine infusion (0.1–0.4mg/kg) over two hours using individual dose-titration design. Outcomes assessed were feasibility, safety, tolerability and antidepressant activity. Results: Out of ninety-nine referrals, ten participants received ketamine and were analysed for responses. Accrual rate was 0.54 participants/month across sites with 50% of treated participants achieving ≥ 50% reduction in baseline Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale, meeting feasibility criteria set a priori. There were no clinically relevant harms encountered. Conclusions: A future definitive trial exploring the effectiveness of subcutaneous infusion of ketamine for major depressive disorder in the palliative care setting may be feasible by addressing identified study barriers. Individual dose-titration of subcutaneous ketamine infusions over two hours from 0.1mg/kg can be well-tolerated and appears to produce transient antidepressant signals over hours to days. With critical lessons drawn from past major earthquakes, the engineering community is appealing for a fundamental shift in the existing design philosophy for structures in seismic zones. One strategy is to endow structures with self-centering (SC) capability. While the concept of SC structures is not new, many novel technologies have been recently emerging that are more efficient, compact, and cost-effective; on the other hand, growing controversy and dispute have also been appearing with deepening investigations. This paper presents a critical review of the evolution of SC technologies and systems for both researchers and practitioners, with an emphasis on post-tension (PT), high-performance spring, and shape memory alloy (SMA) strategies. These SC technologies, together with various energy dissipation options, form the basis of a large part of the newly proposed SC philosophies. This review also includes typical SC structural members such as beam-to-column connections, braces, dampers, shear walls, bridge piers, and isolation bearings, followed by a discussion on the dynamic behavior from a system-level point of view. Available design approaches for SC structures are also touched upon, and practical applications that have emerged over the past decades in several countries including Canada, China, New Zealand, and the US are presented. Atherosclerosis is the underlying cause of the majority of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) due to high-cholesterol deposition in the aorta, resulting in hardening and narrowing of blood vessels and subsequently leading to an obstructed blood flow. There are few previous publications showing the preventive effects of edible bird's nest (EBN) on CVD, but the study on cholesterol homeostasis related to atherosclerosis is limited. In this study, we have determined the mechanisms by which EBN modulates cholesterol metabolism by identifying genes and biomarkers. Male New Zealand white rabbits were fed either a high-fat high-cholesterol (HFC) diet or a HFC diet supplemented with EBN (500 mg/kg b.w/day) for 12 weeks. For comparison purposes, a group of rabbits receiving a HFC diet was supplemented with simvastatin (10 mg/kg b.w/day) as a standard drug treatment for hypercholesterolemia. EBN supplementation significantly improved lipid and coagulation profiles, reduced hepatosteatosis, and stabilized atherosclerotic plaque formation in hypercholesterolemic rabbits. Cholesterol accumulation in liver and aorta tissues, as well as hepatic HMGCR levels, was reduced in the hypercholesterolemic rabbits supplemented with EBN. Gene expression analysis showed that EBN induced many genes related to cholesterol uptake (LDLR, LOX-1, and CD36), cholesterol efflux (ABCA1, LCAT, and CYP7A1), and cholesterol-sensing signaling (LXRα and PPARγ). In conclusion, our studies suggest that EBN supplementation could be an effective food product for the treatment or prevention of atherosclerosis by regulating cholesterol metabolism. Objective: There is lack of an internal fixation following resection of a dumbbell tumor by hemi‐laminectomy and facetectomy that achieves adequate stability with less trauma. Unilateral fixation and reconstruction (unilateral pedicle screw and contralateral lamina screw fixation combined with lateral mass reconstruction, UPS + CLS + LM) may be an ideal technique to address this problem. A biomechanical comparison and a case report were designed to evaluate its spinal stability and clinical effect. Methods: Seven fresh‐frozen human subcervical specimens were used for the biomechanical testing. The conditions tested were: (1) intact; (2) injured (single‐level hemi‐laminectomy and facetectomy); (3) unilateral pedicle screw (UPS) fixation; (4) UPS fixation combined with lateral mass (LM) reconstruction (UPS + LM); (5) UPS fixation and contralateral lamina screw fixation (UPS + CLS); (6) UPS + CLS + LM; (7) UPS fixation and contralateral transarticular screw fixation (UPS + CTAS); (8) bilateral pedicle screw (BPS) fixation. Range of motion (ROM) and neutral zone (NZ) were obtained at C5‐C7 segment under eight conditions. In addition, we report the case of a patient with a C7‐T1 dumbbell tumor that was treated by UPS + CLS + LM technique. Results: Except left/right lateral bending and right axial rotation (all, p < 0.05), ROM of UPS + CLS + LM condition in other directions was similar to that of BPS condition (all, p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between UPS + CLS + LM and the UPS + CTAS condition in other directions of ROM (all, p > 0.05), except in left/right axial rotation (both, p < 0.05). Compared to UPS + CLS condition, left/right lateral bending ROM of UPS + CLS + LM condition were significantly reduced (both, p < 0.05). UPS + CLS + LM condition significantly reduced ROM in all directions compared to UPS and UPS + LM condition (all, p < 0.05). Similarly, except lateral bending (p < 0.05), there was no difference in NZ in other directions between UPS + CLS + LM and BPS condition (both, p > 0.05). There was no significant difference between UPS + CLS + LM and UPS + CTAS condition in NZ in all directions (all, p > 0.05). Axial rotation NZ of UPS + CLS + LM condition was significantly reduced compared to UPS + CLS condition (p < 0.05). Compared to UPS and UPS + LM condition, NZ of UPS + CLS + LM condition was significantly reduced in all directions (all, p < 0.05). The patient's imaging examination at 3 months postoperatively indicated that the internal fixation did not move and the graft bone was seen with fusion. Conclusion: After resection of a dumbbell tumor in the cervical spine, UPS + CLS + LM technique is a reliable internal fixation method to provide sufficient immediate stability and promote postoperative bone fusion. This paper analyzes the impact of participation in farmer groups on dairy farmers' adoption of sustainable farming practices in New Zealand. A spatial propensity score matching method is used to consider the spatial dependence and social connections between farmers in the decision‐making of farmer group participation and adoption of sustainable farming practices. The results show that farmers' decisions of farmer group participation are affected by their neighbors' choices, and participation in farmer groups has a positive effect on farmers' adoption of sustainable farming practices. The findings indicate the important role of social interactions in farmers' voluntary uptake of sustainable agricultural practices. Overall, the positive effect of farmer group participation on the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices highlights learning and knowledge spillover among farmers, which emerges as important to the formulation of sustainable farming policy. Introduction: Despite long-term integrated control programs for Eimeria stiedai infection in China, hepatic coccidiosis in rabbits persists. Th1, Th2, Th17, Treg, Th9, and Th21 cells are involved in immune responses during pathogen infection. It is unclear whether Th cell subsets are also involved in E. stiedai infection. Their roles in the immunopathology of this infection remain unknown. Therefore, monitoring these T-cell subsets' immune responses during primary infection of E. stiedai at both transcriptional (mRNA) and protein (cytokines) levels is essential. Methods: In experimentally infected New Zealand white rabbits, mRNA expression levels of their transcript-TBX2 (Th1), GATA3 (Th2), RORC (Th17), Foxp3 (Treg), SPI1 (Th9), and BCL6 (Th21)--were evaluated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), whereas Th1 (IFN-g and TNF-a), Th2 (IL4), Th17 (IL17A and IL6), Treg (IL10 and TGF-b1), Th9 (IL9), and Th21 (IL21) cytokines were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). Results: We found that levels of TBX2, GATA3, RORC, SPI1, and BCL6 in the livers of infected rabbits were elevated on days 5 and 15 post-infection (PI). The concentrations of their distinctive cytokines IFN-g and TNF-a forTh1, IL4 forTh2, IL17A for Th17, IL9 for Th9, IL21 for Th21, and IL10 for Treg IL10 were also significantly increased on days 5 and 15 PI, respectively (p < 0.05). On day 23 PI, GATA3 with its cytokine IL4, RORC with IL17A, Foxp3 with IL10 and TGF-b1, and SPI1 with IL9 were significantly decreased, butTBX2 with IFN-g and IL6 remained elevated. Discussion: Our findings are the first evidence of Th1/Th2/Treg/Th17/Th9/Th21 changes in E. stiedai-infected rabbits and provide insights into immune regulation mechanisms and possible vaccine development. Mass-transport complexes (MTCs) in sedimentary basins reflect the gravitational transport of sediments from the shelf edge to the abyssal plain. Megaclasts, large sedimentary blocks of hundreds of meters long within MTCs, can record kinematic and sedimentary information deemed essential to understanding source-to-sink systems. Yet, deformation structures in such megaclasts remain poorly understood. This study uses high-quality, three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data from the deep-water Taranaki Basin offshore New Zealand to analyze the morphological character of 123 megaclasts and propose a new classification scheme based on their morphometric properties. The megaclasts are up to 400 m tall, 1900 m long, and 1200 m wide. In the study area, they are high- to moderate-amplitude features owing to their different lithologies and continuous-to-contorted seismic facies. The megaclasts can be classified as undeformed, rotated, deformed, and highly deformed based on their internal deformational styles. Two different kinds of morphological depressions observed on their basal shear zones further indicate whether the megaclasts are transported or formed in situ. Our study demonstrates that quantitative parameterization of the megaclasts provides important information about their deformational processes and a more complete understanding of megaclast emplacement along continental margins. Objective and design: Post-traumatic urethral stricture is a clinical challenge for both patients and clinicians. Targeting glutamine metabolism to suppress excessive activation of urethral fibroblasts (UFBs) is assumed to be a potent and attractive strategy for preventing urethral scarring and stricture. Material or subjects: In cellular experiments, we explored whether glutaminolysis meets the bioenergetic and biosynthetic demands of quiescent UFBs converted into myofibroblasts. At the same time, we examined the specific effects of M2-polarized macrophages on glutaminolysis and activation of UFBs, as well as the mechanism of intercellular signaling. In addition, findings were further verified in vivo in New Zealand rabbits. Results: It revealed that glutamine deprivation or knockdown of glutaminase 1 (GLS1) significantly inhibited UFB activation, proliferation, biosynthesis, and energy metabolism; however, these effects were rescued by cell-permeable dimethyl α-ketoglutarate. Moreover, we found that exosomal miR-381 derived from M2-polarized macrophages could be ingested by UFBs and inhibited GLS1-dependent glutaminolysis, thereby preventing excessive activation of UFBs. Mechanistically, miR-381 directly targets the 3′UTR of Yes-associated protein (YAP) mRNA to reduce its stability at the transcriptional level, ultimately downregulating expression of YAP, and GLS1. In vivo experiments revealed that treatment with either verteporfin or exosomes derived from M2-polarized macrophages significantly reduced urethral stricture in New Zealand rabbits after urethral trauma. Conclusion: Collectively, this study demonstrates that exosomal miR-381 from M2-polarized macrophages reduces myofibroblast formation of UFBs and urethral scarring and stricture by inhibiting YAP/GLS1-dependent glutaminolysis. Purpose: The aim of this study was to confirm the in vivo effect of surface-modified titanium (Ti) implants with zinc (Zn) prepared by a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method on the process of osseointegration. Materials and Methods: Forty-five New Zealand white rabbits were used. Implants were divided into three groups due to different surface treatments (the PEO-Zn group, the PEO-calcium phosphorus [Ca/P] group, and the sandblasted [control] group) and were randomly inserted into rabbit's mandibles. The implant surface morphology and chemical state of the relevant elements were observed. The maximum push-out force, the bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and the mineral apposition ratio (MAR) were detected at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after implantation. Results: A two-layer structure, with a dense inner layer and a porous outer layer, was found in the PEO samples. In the PEO-Zn group, CaHPO4.2H2O (dicalcium phosphate dihydrate) was the main calcium compound and ZnO was identified as the predominant form of Zn. More bone deposition was found on the top of the PEO-Zn implant, which was also confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) afterward and the shear strength reached a maximum value of 1.57 ± 0.26 MPa at 12 weeks compared with the sandblasted group and the PEO-Ca/P group. The BIC values and the MARs of the PEO-Zn group were significantly higher than the control group, especially at the early weeks (P < .05) and first reached maximum values of 73.91% ± 9.01% and 4.89 ± 0.60 μm/d at 12 weeks, respectively. Conclusion: Implants with Zn coating by the PEO method could accelerate bone formation and bone remodeling, shorten the osseointegration period and enhance bone-implant bonding force. This article examines the causes and circumstances of the decline of Korean churches since the 2000s. After briefly sketching the history and critical events of the growth of the Korean church, it pays attention to one of the leading reasons people leave the church and a reason that the Korean church has lost its reliability in the view of much of Korean society. After that, the author introduces two phenomena in the process of the slow growth and decline of the Korean church: the phenomenon of “believing without belonging” and the increase in numbers of bi-vocational ministers. This is a time when the missional church has begun to emerge as a new type of church, different from the traditional church, and at the same time non-institutional churches have emerged as a missional approach to believing without belonging. Furthermore, the author argues that the small missional church is a helpful alternative and required paradigm in the context of the decline of the Korean church by using several case studies, including shared worship space, bi-vocational ministry, and local missional church. Background: While suggested to be effective in tissue regeneration, the effects of horizontal platelet‐rich fibrin (H‐PRF) bone block in sinus augmentation have not been verified in an animal model. Methods: A total of 12 male New Zealand white rabbits that underwent sinus augmentation were divided into two groups: deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) only and H‐PRF bone block. H‐PRF was prepared at 700 × g for 8 min using a horizontal centrifuge. The H‐PRF bone block was prepared by mixing 0.1 g DBBM with H‐PRF fragments and then adding liquid H‐PRF. Samples were collected after 4 and 8 weeks and analyzed using microcomputed tomography (micro‐CT) for vertical bone gain of the sinus, bone volume/total volume (BV/TV) percentage, trabecular number (Tb.N), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) and trabecular separation (Tb.Sp). Then, histological analyses were performed to investigate new blood vessels, material residue, bone formation and osteoclasts. Results: Higher vertical bone gain of the sinus floor, BV/TV percentage, Tb.Th, and Tb.N and lower Tb.Sp were found in the H‐PRF bone block group at both time points compared with the DBBM group. Higher amounts of new blood vessels and more osteoclasts were found in the H‐PRF bone block group than in the DBBM group at both time points, especially in the regions close to the bone plate. More new bone formation and less material residue were observed in the H‐PRF bone block group at 8 weeks. The study was a randomised controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of the Group Triple P Program for Chinese immigrant parents living in New Zealand. Sixty-seven Chinese immigrant parents of a 5- to 9-year-old child with disruptive behaviour problems were randomly allocated to either an intervention or a waitlist group. Parents completed measures of child adjustment problems, general parenting practices, parenting practices in children's academic lives, parental adjustment, parental teamwork, and family relationships at pre-, post-, and 4-month follow-up. Intervention group ratings of programme satisfaction were collected following programme completion. Significant short-term intervention effects were found for improvements in child behaviour, parenting practices, parental teamwork, and parenting in the child academic context. All intervention effects, except for parental teamwork, were maintained at 4-month follow-up. There were no significant intervention effects for parental adjustment, however, medium effect sizes were found at post-intervention and follow-up. The agricultural sector faces increasing social pressure for its environmental impacts, potentially prompting farmers to uptake voluntary 'good management practices' (GMPs). While the existing literature posits that uptake of GMPs is prevalent in observable places such as along busy roads, there is a lack of quantitative empirical evidence. This study identifies whether perceived busy road frontage impacts farmers' adoption of voluntary GMPs via a large-scale survey of dairy and sheep and beef farmers in New Zealand. We find that frontage on a busy road is associated with greater uptake of a GMP that is easily observed and recognised by the general public, but GMPs not visible from the road do not show greater uptake. We further find that the effect is amplified for dairy farmers vis-à-vis sheep and beef farmers, consistent with the higher levels of public scrutiny of the dairy industry. We contribute to the social pressure literature by demonstrating how visible GMPs subject to scrutiny are likely to have higher uptake. • Social pressure pushes industries to change. • One way farms are subject to this pressure is through visibility from the road. • We find busy road frontage increases adoption of visible Good Management Practices. Although nephrite jade has been collected and treasured since the Stone Age, we lack a clear understanding of how it forms during deformation and metasomatism in shear zones. Using microstructural analysis of samples from Taiwan, California, and New Zealand, we propose a conceptual model for the evolution of nephrite jade that distinguishes four nephrite types based on mode of formation and textural characteristics: (1) primary (type 1a) or folded (type 1b) vein nephrite, (2) crenulated nephrite (type 2), (3) foliated semi-nephrite (type 3), and (4) nodular or domainal nephrite (type 4). We interpret the texture of our analysed samples to represent snapshots of a progressive textural evolution similar to that experienced by other deformed and fine-grained metamorphic rocks that develop under fluid-present, greenschist-facies conditions. Our observations suggest that types 2 and 3 nephrite can evolve from vein nephrite (type 1) by the development of crenulated and foliated metamorphic fabrics, during which the most important deformation process is dissolution–precipitation. However, development of metamorphic fabrics can be interrupted by transient brittle deformation, leading to the formation of type 4 nephrite that is characterised by nodular or angular clasts of nephrite in a nephritic matrix. This study explored and documented Taiwanese students' alternative conceptions of animal classification. We examined the understanding of the "animal", "vertebrate" and "invertebrate", "fish", "amphibian", "reptile", "bird", and "mammal" concepts among elementary, junior high school and senior high school, and university students in a sample population of close to 2,000 students. Using clinical interviews, sorting tasks, and a two-tiered diagnostic instrument, we documented the frequencies of a wide range of ideas and compared our findings with those of studies in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and the United States. The most important results indicate that for most students, the concept label "animal" refers to vertebrates, especially to common, well-known mammals and birds; the most common attributes used by students to define animals are movement and viability; many students had difficulty in making the distinction between vertebrates and invertebrates, and between reptiles and amphibians; and students tended to use external morphology, habitat, and movement in distinguishing between common, well-known vertebrates and invertebrates, and certain vertebrate animals pose special conceptual problems for students by virtue of their external morphology and habitat (e.g., the penguin and octopus). We contend that insights gained from this study will provide useful suggestions for Taiwanese science curriculum designers, science teachers, and researchers involved in the new 9-year curriculum reform. Background: Experimental work using pot trials and mesocosm studies has indicated that species combinations are more effective than single species mitigating the soil nutrient constraints that limit pasture productivity in New Zealand's hill country, but there is little field evidence to support this. Aim: We question whether coexistence of species provides an opportunity to facilitate enhanced uptake and improved procurement of key soil nutrients in these mid-altitude grasslands. Methods: Native and exotic legumes and co-occurring plant species were sampled according to whether they were growing together in close proximity or in single species patches. Foliar concentrations of nutrients were compared. Results: Nutrient concentrations in a native broom, Carmichaelia petriei, were higher when it was growing in combination with native tussock grasses. Higher concentrations of eight nutrients were recorded in foliage of an exotic legume, Lotus pedunculatus, when it was growing with native grasses or within the acuminate foliage of Aciphylla aurea (golden spaniard). Foliar concentrations of only P and Mn were elevated in white clover (Trifolium repens) foliage when it was growing in combination with grasses. Conclusions: These findings point to mutual facilitation of nutrient uptake by combinations of species growing together. Some species that are less desirable from an agricultural perspective improve acquisition of soil nutrients by the plant community. Novel native species assemblages represent a potential opportunity to refine pasture management, facilitating optimal exploitation of nutrients. Purpose: To evaluate the correlation between microvascular density (MVD) and intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters and the effect of glycolytic flux after transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in a rabbit VX2 liver tumor. Materials and methods: VX2 liver tumor allografts in 15 New Zealand white rabbits were treated with sterile saline (control group, n = 5) or lipiodoldoxorubicin emulsion (experimental group, n = 10). MRI was performed 2 weeks after the procedure to evaluate IVIM parameters, including apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), pure diffusion coefficient (D), pseudodiffusion coefficient (D*), and perfusion fraction (PF). All animal samples were taken of the tumor and surrounding liver. Immunostaining for CD31, CD34, CD105, and VEGF was used to evaluate MVD. The protein expression of Glut4, HK2, PKM2, LDHA, and MCT1 was determined using western blotting. Pearson correlation tests were used to analyze the relationship between MVD and IVIM parameters. Results: D* value in the peritumoral region was negatively correlated with CD34 (r = –0.71, P = 0.01). PF value positively correlated with CD34 (r = 0.68, P = 0.015), CD105 (r = 0.76, P = 0.004) and VEGF (r = 0.72, P = 0.008) in the peritumoral region. Glut4, HK2, PKM2, and MCT1 in the peritumoral regions were higher in the experimental group than in the control group (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: IVIM parameters were correlated with MVD in the intratumoral and peritumoral regions after TACE in a rabbit liver tumor model. Background: Implant-associated Infection remains a major complication of orthopedic surgery. The treatment of such infection is complicated by bacterial biofilm formation on the metal surfaces of implants. Biofilm surrounds and protects the bacteria against the organism's endogenous defense system and from external agents such as antibiotics and mechanical debridement. This study aims to evaluate whether freezing nitrogen ethanol composite (FNEC), the combination of liquid nitrogen and 95% ethanol in a 3 to 1 ratio, used frequently in bone tumor surgery, is capable of disinfecting Staphylococcus aureus contaminated implants. Methods: The femurs of six New Zealand white rabbits were implanted with S. aureus-contaminated screws, half of which were treated with FNEC before implantation. The femurs were harvested 14 days after implantation. Histological analysis and TUNEL assay were conducted. The autoclaved screw, contaminated screw, and FNEC-treated contaminated screw were investigated using scanning electron microscopy to evaluate the biofilm structure. Results: The FNEC-treated group had significantly lower relative C-reactive protein levels. An obvious periosteal reaction at the implant site was observed in all rabbits in the non-FNEC group but none was observed in the FNEC-treated group. The FNEC-treated group exhibited fewer empty lacunae, less inflammatory infiltration, and less bone necrosis. Immunohistochemical analysis showed no S. aureus in bone tissue from the FNEC-treated group. Scanning electron microscopy showed disruption of the biofilm on the contaminated screw treated with FNEC. Conclusion: FNEC showed potential in disinfecting S.aureus-contaminated implants. Learning about one's implicit bias is crucial for improving one's cultural competency and thereby reducing health inequity. To evaluate bias among medical students following a previously developed cultural training program targeting New Zealand Māori, we developed a text-based, self-evaluation tool called the Similarity Rating Test (SRT). The development process of the SRT was resource-intensive, limiting its generalizability and applicability. Here, we explored the potential of ChatGPT, an automated chatbot, to assist in the development process of the SRT by comparing ChatGPT's and students' evaluations of the SRT. Despite results showing non-significant equivalence and difference between ChatGPT's and students' ratings, ChatGPT's ratings were more consistent than students' ratings. The consistency rate was higher for non-stereotypical than for stereotypical statements, regardless of rater type. Further studies are warranted to validate ChatGPT's potential for assisting in SRT development for implementation in medical education and evaluation of ethnic stereotypes and related topics. Pressure sewer networks offer a flexible alternative to more traditional gravity-based systems for the conveyance of wastewater. Some of the issues associated with pressure sewer networks (e.g., odor, septicity) arise from inappropriate design assumptions. Daily inflow volumes are a crucial part of the design of pressure sewer systems; gravity design parameters are presently used to design pressure sewer networks in New Zealand. This study analyzed flow data from six representative pressure sewer networks (approximately 24% of operating pump units in New Zealand) to identify the daily inflow volumes per connected pump unit. The results indicated that the median inflow volume was approximately 410 L/pump unit/day. This inflow is much lower than current council design standard assumptions, which range from 650 to 1,000 L/pump unit/day. Pressure sewer network designs using higher daily loading rates may result in oversized networks that are detrimental to the network's operation and performance, especially for meeting minimum self-cleansing velocities and wastewater retention times. The data collection period included the first COVID-19 lockdown in New Zealand. Four lockdown levels were introduced, with Level 4 and Level 3 being the most restrictive and requiring all but essential workers to stay and work from home. Levels 1 and 2 allowed people to return to their place of work. The data indicated that the Level 4 lockdown period caused a 25% increase in daily inflow volumes. In comparison, the Level 3 and 2 lockdown periods increased the daily inflow volumes by 20% and 15%, respectively. The analysis also included the networks' wet-weather responses. Minor rain events did not significantly affect the daily inflow volumes. However, gravity networks that have been retrofitted with pressure sewer networks may be more subject to aging or damaged laterals and illegal stormwater connections, both of which are likely to result in a more significant wet-weather response. The paper also discusses the issues associated with an overreliance on standardized design methods without understanding their proper application and the pitfalls of adopting gravity sewer design assumptions for pressure sewer network designs. The findings of this paper will further allow determination of the sensitivity of network design outcomes, performance, and maintenance requirements to the design methods and assumptions for pressure sewer networks, not only in New Zealand but in any country that uses the technology. Experience from within the engineering industry suggests that some asset owners may not have a clear understanding of aspects of pressure sewer technology or its appropriate operational philosophy. Another factor may be that because of a lack of data and experience with the technology, some asset owners may be unsure how pressure sewer networks should be incorporated into existing gravity networks. Asset owners and residential developers are facing both challenges and opportunities for wastewater management; however, the role of alternative technologies to address this is unclear. Furthermore, there is a greater focus on sustainability within the construction industry, and asset owners are encouraged to continually seek ways to minimize the impact of their activities on the environment by setting carbon reduction targets and reducing energy consumption. It is important that pressure sewer network designers consider the effects of lower design inflow volumes when assessing a pressure sewer network's performance, and to understand the implications or potential issues with oversized networks. Objective: Studies indicate that age-standardised heart failure (HF) incidence has been decreasing internationally; however, contrasting trends in different age groups have been reported, with rates increasing in younger people and decreasing in the elderly. We aimed to describe age-specific trends in HF incidence in New Zealand (NZ).Methods: In this nationwide data linkage study, we used routinely collected hospitalisation data to identify incident HF hospitalisations in NZ residents aged ≥20 years between 2006 and 2018. Age-specific and age-standardised incidence rates were calculated for each calendar year. Joinpoint regression was used to compare incidence trends.Results: 116 113 incident HF hospitalisations were identified over the 13-year study period. Between 2006 and 2013, age-standardised incidence decreased from 403 to 323 per 100 000 (annual percentage change (APC) -2.6%, 95% CI -3.6 to -1.6%). This reduction then plateaued between 2013 and 2018 (APC 0.8%, 95% CI -0.8 to 2.5%). Between 2006 and 2018, rates in individuals aged 20-49 years old increased by 1.5% per year (95% CI 0.3 to 2.7%) and decreased in those aged ≥80 years old by 1.2% per year (95% CI -1.7 to -0.7%). Rates in individuals aged 50-79 years old initially declined from 2006 to 2013, and then remained stable or increased from 2013 to 2018. The proportion of HF hospitalisations associated with ischaemic heart disease decreased from 35.1% in 2006 to 28.0% in 2018.Conclusion: HF remains an important problem in NZ. Background: Depression is prevalent in people with very poor prognoses (days to weeks). Clinical practices and perceptions of palliative physicians towards depression care have not been characterised in this setting. The objective of this study was to characterise current palliative clinicians' reported practices and perceptions in depression screening, assessment and management in the very poor prognosis setting. Methods: In this cross-sectional cohort study, 72 palliative physicians and 32 psychiatrists were recruited from Australian and New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine and Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists between February and July 2020 using a 23-item anonymous online survey. Results: Only palliative physicians results were reported due to poor psychiatry representation. Palliative physicians perceived depression care in this setting to be complex and challenging. 40.0% reported screening for depression. All experienced uncertainty when assessing depression aetiology. Approaches to somatic symptom assessment varied. Physicians were generally less likely to intervene for depression than in the better prognosis setting. Most reported barriers to care included the perceived lack of rapidly effective therapeutic options (77.3%), concerns of patient burden and intolerance (71.2%), and the complexity in diagnostic differentiation (53.0%). 66.7% desired better collaboration between palliative care and psychiatry. Conclusions: Palliative physicians perceived depression care in patients with very poor prognoses to be complex and challenging. The lack of screening, variations in assessment approaches, and the reduced likelihood of intervening in comparison to the better prognosis setting necessitate better collaboration between palliative care and psychiatry in service delivery, training and research. Cherry leaf roll virus (CLRV) is an important plant pathogen that causes severe and detrimental effects on cherry and other fruit plants. Despite recent progress in plant pathology, molecular biology, and population genetics of CLRV, the spatiotemporal spread of this virus remains poorly studied. In this study, we employed a Bayesian phylodynamics framework to investigate the spatial diffusion patterns of CLRV by analyzing the coat protein gene sequences of 81 viral isolates collected from five different countries. Consistent with the trade of cherry, our Bayesian phylodynamic analyses pointed to viral origins in New Zealand and identified multiple migration pathways between Germany and other countries, suggesting that Germany has played an important role in CLRV transmission. Many coastal ecosystems have a high carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) accumulation capacity. Extractable C and N have been shown to be useful indicators to assess changes in soil C and N in terrestrial systems but have not been widely used in coastal habitats. Here, we quantified cold and hot water extractable organic C (cweC, hweC) and N (cweN, hweN) and determined specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA 254) to evaluate how water extractable C and N concentration and chemistry change along the transition from mangrove (vegetated) to tidal flat (non-vegetated) and with sediment depth. Sediment cores (20 cm depth) were collected along transects in a muddy (29–46 % clay + silt, Snells Beach) and sandy (8–11% clay + silt, Hobson Bay) estuary in the Auckland region, New Zealand. Cold water exactable C and N concentrations were similar in the muddy and sandy estuary (7–173 μg C g−1 soil; 1–32 μg N g−1 soil). However, cweC and cweN made up a larger proportion of sediment C and N concentration at the sandy estuary. The hweC and hweN concentrations were significantly higher in the muddy (240–2440 μg C g−1 soil; 25–244 μg N g−1 soil) than sandy estuary (50–960 μg C g−1 soil; 6–119 μg N g−1 soil) suggesting a higher release of C and N from the muddy estuary with organic matter rich sediments. Habitat had a strong effect at both sites with extractable C and N concentrations being higher in mangroves compared to tidal flat. The C:N ratios and SUVA 254 values of cweC tended to be lower than hweC across all habitats in both estuaries, suggesting a higher proportion of algal-derived organic matter and a lower proportion of aromatic molecules. Delivering memorable experiences is the essence of the tourism industry and has been regarded as a core aspect of competitiveness for destinations under the experiential marketing paradigm. However, knowledge remains scarce regarding how memorability can be generated and how it shapes tourist behavior. Taking rural tourism as the research context, this study proposes a theoretical model in which memorability is generated through ordinary experiences (perceived quality and satisfaction) and extraordinary experiences (perceived novelty and delight), which go on to influence word of mouth. This model was tested using two data sets gathered from Chinese tourists visiting rural destinations in China (n = 873) and in New Zealand (n = 500), respectively. Against the backdrop of a global pandemic, the Society for Reproductive Biology (SRB) 2021 meeting reunited the Australian and New Zealand reproductive research community for the first time since 2019 and was the first virtual SRB meeting. Despite the recent global research disruptions, the conference revealed significant advancements in reproductive research, the importance of which span human health, agriculture, and conservation. A core theme was novel technologies, including the use of medical microrobots for therapeutic and sperm delivery, diagnostic hyperspectral imaging, and hydrogel condoms with potential beyond contraception. The importance of challenging the contraceptive status quo was further highlighted with innovations in gene therapies, non-hormonal female contraceptives, epigenetic semen analysis, and in applying evolutionary theory to suppress pest population reproduction. How best to support pregnancies, particularly in the context of global trends of increasing maternal age, was also discussed, with several promising therapies for improved outcomes in assisted reproductive technology, pre-eclampsia, and pre-term birth prevention. The unique insights gained via non-model species was another key focus and presented research emphasised the importance of studying diverse systems to understand fundamental aspects of reproductive biology and evolution. Finally, the meeting highlighted how to effectively translate reproductive research into policy and industry practice. The Society for Reproductive Biology (SRB) is an Australian and New Zealand based organisation that supports basic and applied research across all aspects of reproductive biology. This review highlights the key themes from the annual SRB meeting, which was held virtually in 2021. The lack of a well-established animal model limits the clarification of the detailed mechanisms of the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis with pulmonary hypertension (SSc-PH) and the development of effective treatments for it. In this study, New Zealand rabbits were injected with monocrotaline (MCT), bleomycin (BLM), and MCT plus BLM, respectively. Three and six weeks after the first injection, the mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) was measured. Skin and lung samples were isolated and the histological changes were analyzed by hematoxylin and eosin staining or Masson's trichrome staining. All groups of rabbits showed an increased mean mPAP compared with the saline-injected rabbits. The high mPAP persisted until week six only in the MCT and MCT + BLM groups. Furthermore, persistent high Fulton's indices were found in the MCT and MCT + BLM groups, indicating that these treatments successfully induced right ventricular hypertrophy. The rabbits in the MCT + BLM group developed severe lung inflammation, as evidenced by a high level of neutrophil infiltration in the pulmonary interstitium. Importantly, pathological changes of the skin in the MCT + BLM group were observed, and further damage to the skin was caused by additional exposure to MCT plus BLM. Meanwhile, an excessive production of cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1), were detected in the MCT + BLM group. These data indicate that SSc-PH induced by co-injection with MCT plus BLM shows persistent fibrosis and progressive PH, constituting a potential study model for SSc-PH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Combinations of grasses and nitrogen-fixing legumes are ubiquitous in most natural and derived pastoral grasslands. This was not formerly the case in New Zealand's unique indigenous grasslands that are now frequently impacted by exotic pasture grasses and legumes. Understanding the co-existence of native and exotic plants is the broad focus of this research. Aims: Spillover of nitrogen (N) from clovers to grasses in diverse pasture is well known. We question whether grasses provide reciprocal nutritional benefits to legumes. Does the mutual exploitation of soil biogeochemistry by legumes and grasses help to explain their coexistence and, if so, does this have implications for biodiversity in NZ's novel native grassland communities? Methods: Combinations of grasses and legumes, including a native tussock grass, were grown in a nutrient-poor (low P, S, Ca, Mg, Mn, and B) high country soil in a pot experiment, quantifying the foliar acquisition of nutrients from soil. Field data were obtained by sampling foliage of clover in single- and mixed-species patches in a more fertile lowland pasture. Results: Benefits of legume and grass growing together were reflected in enhanced productivity and higher uptake of a range of key nutrients. This was most evident but not restricted to a combination of two exotic species: cocksfoot and white clover. In the nutrient-poor soil, legumes grew better in combination with different species of introduced grasses. Uptake of key elements from soil to plants significantly differed with combinations of legumes and grasses compared to individual species. Elevated concentrations of P, K and S were recorded in clover when growing with grasses, although Ca uptake was lower. Expected reciprocal reduction of clover N or enhanced grass N were not recorded. Mass balance data (total extraction of key nutrients from the soil pool) showed that combination of grasses and legumes exploit soil nutrients (particularly P, Zn, Mn and Mo) more effectively than single species alone. In grasses, only tissue concentrations of K, S and Zn significantly increased when growing with legumes, but native tussock grass procured less nutrients when growing with the exotic legumes. Field sampling of clover from the more fertile lowland soil showed significantly higher foliar concentrations of K, Mn, Cu and B, but less Ca. Conclusions: The findings are indicative of a mutualistic relationship: legumes derive nutritional benefits from growing with grasses. Native tussock grass contained less N when growing with the exotic legumes, suggesting less compatibility and a lack of adaptation to coexistence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Whilst Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) has been widely accepted in the international colorectal surgery community, there remains significant variations in ERAS programme implementations, compliance rates and best practice recommendations in international guidelines. Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to colorectal surgeons from Australia and New Zealand after ethics approval. It evaluated specialist attitudes towards the effectiveness of specific ERAS interventions in improving short term outcomes after colorectal surgery. The data were analysed using a rating scale and graded response model in item response theory (IRT) on Stata MP, version 15 (StataCorp LP, College Station, TX). Results: Of 300 colorectal surgeons, 95 (31.7%) participated in the survey. Of eighteen ERAS interventions, this study identified eight strategies as most effective in improving ERAS programmes alongside early oral feeding and mobilisation. These included pre-operative iron infusion for anaemic patients (IRT score = 7.82 [95% CI: 6.01–9.16]), minimally invasive surgery (IRT score = 7.77 [95% CI: 5.96–9.07]), early in-dwelling catheter removal (IRT score = 7.69 [95% CI: 5.83–9.01]), pre-operative smoking cessation (IRT score = 7.68 [95% CI: 5.49–9.18]), pre-operative counselling (IRT score = 7.44 [95% CI: 5.58–8.88]), avoiding drains in colon surgery (IRT score = 7.37 [95% CI: 5.17–8.95]), avoiding nasogastric tubes (IRT score = 7.29 [95% CI: 5.32–8.8]) and early drain removal in rectal surgery (IRT score = 5.64 [95% CI: 3.49–7.66]). Conclusions: This survey has demonstrated the current attitudes of colorectal surgeons from Australia and New Zealand regarding ERAS interventions. Eight of the interventions assessed in this study including pre-operative iron infusion for anaemic patients, minimally invasive surgery, early in-dwelling catheter removal, pre-operative smoking cessation, pre-operative counselling, avoidance of drains in colon surgery, avoiding nasogastric tubes and early drain removal in rectal surgery should be considered an important part of colorectal ERAS programmes. Background: To investigate the effects of autologous meniscus fragment (AMF) implantation on injury in the meniscal avascular zone in mature rabbits.Methods: Adult New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into two groups. Massive one-piece meniscus tissue was implanted in situ as control. In the experimental group, AMF was used to repair the meniscal injury in the avascular zone. Meniscal damage was assessed by gross observation of the degree of healing and histological semi-quantitative evaluation within 12 weeks postoperatively. The healing of meniscus interface was assessed by gross observation semiquantitative scoring and microscopic examination hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining at 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery. The expressions of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), collagen type I (COL1A1), and collagen type II (COL2) were detected by immunohistochemical staining.Results: The degree of healing in the AMF group showed a significant increase over time (P < 0.05); the AMF group showed higher gross scores than the control group at 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery (P < 0.05). The histological scores in the AMF group were significantly higher than those in the control group at 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery (P < 0.05). The protein expression of PCNA in the AMF group was greater than that in the control group at 2, 4, and 8 weeks after surgery (P < 0.05). In addition, compared with the control group, the protein levels of COL1A1 and COL2 were significantly upregulated at each time-point. At 2 and 4 weeks after surgery, the expression level of COL1A1 increased in both groups followed by a gradual decrease after 8 weeks (P < 0.05). At 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery, the expression levels of COL2 showed a gradual decrease in both groups (P < 0.05).Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that the AMF method can promote the repair of rabbit meniscal injury in the avascular zone, and this method may potentially be used for clinical application. This study was designed to investigate the regulatory effect of hyaluronic acid (HA)—coating silk fibroin (SF) nanofibers during epithelialization of urinary tract for urethral regeneration. The obtained electrospun biomimetic tubular HA‐SF nanofiber scaffold is composed of a dense inner layer and a porous outer layer in order to mimic adhesion and cavernous layers of the native tissue, respectively. A thin layer of HA‐gel coating was fixed in the inner wall to provide SF nanofibers with a dense and smooth surface nano‐topography and higher hydrophilicity. Compared with pure SF nanofibers, HA‐SF nanofibers significantly promoted the adhesion, growth, and proliferation of primary urothelial cells, and up‐regulate the expression of uroplakin‐3 (terminal differentiation keratin protein in urothelium). Using the New Zealand male rabbit urethral injury model, the scaffold composed of tubular HA‐SF nanofibers could recruit lumen and myoepithelial cells from the adjacent area of the host, rapidly reconstructing the urothelial barrier in the wound area in order to keep the urinary tract unobstructed, thereby promoting luminal epithelialization, smooth muscle bundle structural remodeling, and capillary formation.
