Objective: To develop a post‐traumatic osteoarthritic model of hip following fracture of acetabulum in rabbit for revealing biochemical mechanism of post‐traumatic osteoarthritis. Methods: A total of 36 mature male New Zealand white rabbits were equally divided into sham group (n = 12), non‐ORIF group (n = 12), and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) group (n = 12). Except for the sham group, rabbits had survival surgeries to create acetabular fractures of dorsal wall for simulating dashboard impaction mechanism. The ORIF group received open reduction and internal fixation, while fractures in the non‐ORIF group were left as displaced but transverse fracture and dislocation was reduced. Besides intraoperative appearance and postoperative recovery, macroscopic and radiographic characteristics of the hips were recorded and assessed by a radiographic scoring scale at 3 weeks, 6 weeks, and 6 months, respectively. Results: Out of 24 modeled acetabula, 21 (87.5%) were pure dorsal wall fractures as proposed and the remaining three were associated fractures (dorsal wall plus transverse fracture) accompanied by dorsal dislocation or not. All hips were stable, and no sciatic nerve injury was observed. One rabbit in the ORIF group died of deep infection 4 days after surgery. Rabbits in the sham and ORIF groups returned to normal gait in 2 weeks, but animals in the non‐ORIF group suffered from limping and restricted movement. As the time progressed, the hips in the non‐ORIF group experienced progressive and severe degeneration which exhibited dramatically malformed and hypertrophic joints at 6 months, but the ORIF group maintained much better morphological structure. Corresponding to morphological changes, the average radiographic scores of the non‐ORIF group increased from 1.25 at 3 weeks to 2.75 at 6 months and showed statistically significant difference when compared to the sham group at all three time points (P = 0.011, 0.011, 0.015, respectively, <0.0167). Although the scores of the ORIF group showed apparent improvements (increased from 0.67 at 3 weeks to 2.00 at 6 months), there was no significant difference between the two modeled groups at all three time points. Conclusion: The fracture model with high consistency and reproducibility showed progressive post‐traumatic osteoarthritic changes which could be improved by open reduction and internal fixation surgery and provided an alternative selection for investigating potential pathogenesis and pathology of post‐traumatic osteoarthritis following fracture of acetabulum. Objective: Regarding the displaying of the main differences between the pelvic limb of rabbit and cat. Materials and methods: Our work was performed on 10 New Zealand rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and domestic cats (Felis domestica) with variable ages and of both sexes. After weighing of the animals, sedation, and anesthesia, the animals were examined radiographically. The bones of the pelvic limb were prepared, measured for its length/cm then described and compared. Results: The iliac tuberosity and the conversion of the acetabular notch into foramen were characteristics of Os coxae of the rabbit. The intertrochanteric crest was detected on the femur of the cat. In the rabbit, the leg interosseous space was located in the proximal third of this region while in the cat, it was extended along its length. The first metatarsal was undeveloped in the cat but was absent in the rabbit so metatarsal were four in the rabbit and five in the cat. The digits of the pelvic limbs in both animals were four in number. The distal sesamoid was single, transversely situated, and shuttle-shaped in rabbit but it was absent in cat. Conclusion: So, the chief points of variation between the pelvic limb bones of rabbit and cat enabled us to keep away the commercial fraud and facilitated their use as an animal model for education purposes. Introduction: We have investigated the revision rates of all bearing surface combinations for primary total hip replacement (THR) registered on the New Zealand Joint Registry (NZJR) to determine which coupling has been the most durable and successful over the last 16 years., Methods: There were 106,139 primary THRs registered, resulting in 4,960 revisions for any cause. We examined all-cause revision rates, reasons for revision and performed survival analyses., Results: Ceramic-on-highly cross-linked polyethylene (CoPx) had the lowest all-cause revision rate of 0.54/100-component-years (cys) (95% confidence interval 0.48 to 0.61). This was superior to all other hard-on-soft bearing combinations in unadjusted analysis. Furthermore, the age of patients receiving CoPx was significantly lower than for metal-on-polyethylene (mean 62.9; standard deviation [SD] 10.1 vs. 69.1; SD 9.6; p<0.001). Acetabular loosening was the reason for revision in 14.5% of CoPx, compared to 33% of MoP THRs (p<0.001). Metal-on-metal bearings had the highest revision rate of 1.43/100 cys and were significantly inferior to CoPx (p<0.001). Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression analyses were performed and we adjusted the analyses to control for age, femoral head size, surgical approach and fixation., Conclusions: CoPx remained the most durable and successful coupling used in primary THR in New Zealand irrespective of age, gender or size of femoral head.

Background: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) can be performed using either femoral and acetabular components provided by the same manufacturer (matched components) or components from different manufacturers (unmatched components). We hypothesized that there would be no difference in outcomes following the use of unmatched compared to matched components., Methods: Data from a nationwide joint registry, the New Zealand Joint Registry (NZJR), were analyzed to assess long-term outcomes of using unmatched implants in THA., Results: The NZJR has recorded a total of 108,613 primary THAs. We excluded combinations with less than 50 implantations, leaving 99,732 arthroplasties (90.5%). The unmatched group consisted of 24,537 (24.6%) THAs. Revision procedures were required in 3434 (4.6%) of the matched group, at a rate of 0.72/100 component years and 1078 (4.4%) of the unmatched group, a rate of 0.69/100 component years (P = .049). THAs with metal-on-metal or ceramic-on-metal bearings were overrepresented in the matched group. When analysis was repeated with these implants excluded, there was no longer a difference in revision rate between groups (4.0% revisions, 0.65/100 component years and 4.3% revisions, 0.67/100 component years [P = .742]). Survival analysis showed 17-year survival for matched components and unmatched to be within 95% confidence intervals at all time points. There was a small, statistically significant improvement in Oxford Hip Scores for the unmatched group compared with the matched group., Conclusion: Data from the NZJR confirm that the use of unmatched components in THA has no adverse effect on outcomes., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. We compared the rate of revision for instability after total hip replacement (THR) when lipped and non-lipped acetabular liners were used. We hypothesised that the use of a lipped liner in a modular uncemented acetabular component reduces the risk of revision for instability after primary THR. Using data from the New Zealand Joint Registry, we found that the use of a lipped liner was associated with a significantly decreased rate of revision for instability and for all other indications. Adjusting for the size of the femoral head, the surgical approach and the age and gender of the patient, this difference remained strongly significant (p < 0.001). We conclude that evidence from the New Zealand registry suggests that the use of lipped liners with modular uncemented acetabular components is associated with a decreased rate of revision for instability after primary THR., (©2014 The British Editorial Society of Bone & Joint Surgery.)

With increasing urban development in New Zealand, prehistoric Polynesian skeletal remains are frequently being recovered. Since such material must often be reinterred quickly, it has become important that the sex of individuals be determined from the remains in a relatively short time. For this purpose, discriminant function analysis was utilised for sex determination of prehistoric adult New Zealand Polynesian innominates (21 male and 35 female). Maximum diameter of the acetabulum was measured and subjected to SPSS direct discriminant function analysis. Accuracy of sex determination ranged from 85.2% to 86.2%. Reduction in error over random assignment by sex ranged from 70% to 72%. The two discriminant functions derived will provide a useful tool for the assessment of human remains in the forensic and archaeological context because they incorporate a single measurement which can be taken on incomplete bones.
