This article discusses the impact of deer wallows on watershed water quality in New Zealand. According to the authors, red deer have a natural tendency to create a wallow in a wet area connected to a waterway. Water samples of storm flow and base flow were analyzed for phosphorus, nitrogen, Escherichia coli, and suspended sediment. They found high loads particularly when deer were wallowing. They recommend that management should break the connection between wallows and waterways or discourage wallowing.
