There has been a recent upsurge in human cases of leptospirosis in New Zealand, with wildlife a suspected emerging source, but up-to-date knowledge on this topic is lacking. We conducted a cross-sectional study in two farm environments to estimate Leptospira seroprevalence in wildlife and sympatric livestock, PCR/culture prevalence in wildlife, and compare seroprevalence and prevalence between species, sex, and age groups. Traps targeting house mice (Mus musculus), black rats (Rattus rattus), hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) and brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) were set for 10 trap-nights in March-April 2017 on a dairy (A) and a beef and sheep (B) farm. Trapped wild animals and an age-stratified random sample of domestic animals, namely cattle, sheep and working dogs were blood sampled. Sera were tested by microagglutination test for five serogroups and titres compared using a Proportional Similarity Index (PSI). Wildlife kidneys were sampled for culture and qPCR targeting the lipL32 gene. True prevalence in mice was assessed using occupancy modelling by collating different laboratory results. Infection profiles varied by species, age group and farm. At the MAT cut-point of ≥ 48, up to 78% of wildlife species, and 16–99% of domestic animals were seropositive. Five of nine hedgehogs, 23/105 mice and 1/14 black rat reacted to L. borgpetersenii sv Ballum. The sera of 4/18 possums and 4/9 hedgehogs reacted to L. borgpetersenii sv Hardjobovis whilst 1/18 possum and 1/9 hedgehog reacted to Tarassovi. In ruminants, seroprevalence for Hardjobovis and Pomona ranged 0–90% and 0–71% depending on the species and age group. Titres against Ballum, Tarassovi and Copenhageni were also observed in 4–20%, 0–25% and 0–21% of domestic species, respectively. The PSI indicated rodents and livestock had the most dissimilar serological responses. Three of nine hedgehogs, 31/105 mice and 2/14 rats were carrying leptospires (PCR and/or culture positive). True prevalence estimated by occupancy modelling in mice was 38% [95% Credible Interval 26, 51%] on Farm A and 22% [11, 40%] on Farm B. In the same environment, exposure to serovars found in wildlife species was commonly detected in livestock. Transmission pathways between and within species should be assessed to help in the development of efficient mitigation strategies against Leptospira. Author summary: Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can be transmitted through the urine of infected animals. Recently, the number of human cases of leptospirosis in New Zealand has increased, and wildlife is suspected to be an emerging source. To better understand this, a study was conducted on two farms in New Zealand. Wild animals, including mice, rats, hedgehogs, and possums, and domestic animals, including cattle, sheep, and working dogs, were captured, and tested for exposure to Leptospira. We found multiple serovars of leptospirosis throughout both livestock and wildlife, with important variation by species and age class. Reactions to Ballum were found in all domestic and wild species and all ages while domestic animals, possums, and hedgehogs commonly reacted to Hardjobovis. Cattle, sheep, hedgehogs, and possums also showed exposure to Tarassovi. These indicate potential multiple and complex pathways of disease transmission and dynamics among serovars and suggest that Leptospira infection in wildlife in New Zealand can pose a risk to both livestock and human health. To investigate the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in a convenience sample of working farm dogs and their home-kill raw meat diets in Manawatū, New Zealand. Fifty farms in the Manawatū, with at least three working/herding dogs per farm that were fed raw home-killed meat at least fortnightly, were visited. One sample of dog faeces and one sample of food were collected per farm using convenience sampling. If a dog did not defecate, a sample was obtained by digital recovery. Basic descriptive data for all dogs, meat and farm characteristics were recorded. Stomached meat samples and swabs from faecal samples were pre-enriched in buffered peptone water followed by two selective enrichments with agar subculture. Isolates were confirmed to be Salmonella spp. by serology and biochemical characterisation. No Salmonella spp. were isolated from dog faeces or raw meat samples, giving an observed prevalence rate of 0 (95% CI = 0.0–7.1)%. In this study, there was no evidence that working farm dogs and their home-kill raw meat represent likely sources of infection with Salmonella spp. Although this study found no evidence suggesting that farmers should change their feeding practices, it is based on a small sample, from a single region of New Zealand and involved sampling on one occasion for Salmonella spp. only. Currently, although the prevalence of Salmonella spp. carriage appears to be low, feeding raw meat-based diets to working dogs remains a risk and due to the potential zoonotic implications for humans, hygienic measures should be maintained when in contact with dogs and raw meat. Aims: To obtain preliminary data on changes in gait from the use of a green-lipped mussel ( Perna canaliculus ) extract product in working farm dogs with musculoskeletal abnormalities using accelerometry. Methods: New Zealand working farm dogs (n = 32) with signs of musculoskeletal abnormalities were enrolled in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled cross-over study. Each dog was allocated to one of six groups to receive three trial substances (180 mg full fat green-lipped mussel extract (GLME 180 ); 220 mg full fat green-lipped mussel extract (GLME 220 ); placebo) in one of the six possible different orders. Each trial substance was administered orally once a day for an 8-week period, with a 4-week washout in between each. Dogs wore a collar-mounted triaxial accelerometer for the study duration. Diet and activity were not controlled. Accelerations were recorded continuously and analysed (n = 27) in 10-second activity epochs partitioned into daytime and night-time periods. Analysis of activity during the daytime period was limited to epochs when dogs were gaiting faster than a walk. The median and IQR of activity were determined for the daytime and night-time. Additionally, the 75th and 90th percentiles of daytime activity for each 24-hour period were determined. Mixed effects linear regression models were constructed to determine if each trial substance altered the response variables., Results: During the daytime, the 90th percentile was higher when dogs were given GLME 220 compared with the placebo (β coefficient 2.6; 95% CI = 0.25-4.94; p = 0.03). Dogs that started the trial with the GLME products had a higher 90th percentile activity compared with dogs that began with the placebo (β coefficient 26.26; 95% CI = 0.45-52.06; p = 0.046). The 75th percentile for activity was not affected by the GLME product. The daytime IQR was larger when dogs were given the GLME 180 product compared with the placebo (β coefficient 1.25; 95% CI = 0.12-2.37; p = 0.03). Night-time median activity and the IQR was greater in dogs that started the trial with the GLME products than in dogs that began with the placebo. The night-time IQR for activity was greater for GLME 180 than for the placebo., Conclusions: Administration of a low dose of the GLME-containing product increased peak activity in working farm dogs with signs of musculoskeletal abnormalities and may improve their performance., Clinical Relevance: Even mildly affected working farm dogs might benefit from support of their musculoskeletal abnormalities, and this particular GLME-based product shows promise as an adjunct to other management strategies.

New Zealand farm working dogs are supreme athletes that are crucial to agriculture in the region. The effects that low or high dietary carbohydrate (CHO) content might have on their interstitial glucose (IG) and activity during work are unknown. The goals of the study were to determine if the concentration of IG and delta-g (a measurement of activity) will be lower in dogs fed an ultra-low CHO high fat diet in comparison to dogs fed a high CHO low fat diet, and to determine if low concentrations of IG are followed by reduced physical activity. We hypothesized that feeding working farm dogs an ultra-low CHO diet would reduce their IG concentrations which in turn would reduce physical activity during work. We prospectively recruited 22 farm dogs from four farms. At each farm, dogs were randomized to one of two diets and had a month of dietary acclimation to their allocated diet. The macronutrient proportions as a percentage of metabolizable energy (%ME) for the high CHO low fat diet (Diet 1) were 23% protein, 25% fat, and 52% CHO, and for the ultra-low CHO high fat diet (Diet 2) 37% protein, 63% fat, and 1% CHO. Following the acclimation period, we continuously monitored IG concentrations with flash glucose monitoring devices, and delta-g using triaxial accelerometers for 96 h. Dogs fed Diet 2 had a lower area under the curve (±SE) for IG (AUC Diet 2 = 497 ± 4 mmol/L/96h, AUC Diet 1 = 590 ± 3 mmol/L/96h; P = 0.002) but a higher area under the curve (±SE) for delta-g (AUC Diet 2 = 104,122 ± 6,045 delta-g/96h, AUC Diet 1 = 80,904 ± 4,950 delta-g/96h; P< 0.001). Interstitial glucose concentrations increased as the activity level increased (P < 0.001) and were lower for Diet 2 within each activity level (P < 0.001). The overall incidence of low IG readings (< 3.5 mmol/L) was 119/3810 (3.12%), of which 110 (92.4%) readings occurred in the Diet 2 group (P = 0.001). In the Diet 2 group, 99/110 (90%) of the low IG events occurred during the resting period (19:00–06:00). We conclude that feeding Diet 2 (ultra-low CHO high fat diet) to working farm dogs was associated with increased delta-g despite decreased IG concentrations. Interstitial glucose concentrations were positively associated with dogs' activity levels independent of diet. Lastly, events of low IG occurred at a low incidence and were predominantly seen between 19:00–06:00 in dogs fed the ultra-low CHO high fat diet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the introduction of concentrated cattle pour‐on products containing abamectin, there have been veterinary reports of both fatal and non‐fatal poisoning in New Zealand working dogs. Because these products are highly palatable to dogs, a toxic dose is readily ingested. The pharmacokinetic properties of abamectin in dogs are not published in the public domain. This information is important in understanding the processes of absorption and elimination when treating poisoned dogs and is useful in determining an appropriate treatment for poisoned dogs. The pharmacokinetic properties of abamectin administered orally to six healthy dogs (3 male and 3 female) at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg were established. Plasma concentrations of abamectin were determined by high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with a fluorescence detector. The maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) for abamectin was 135.52 ± 38.6 ng/ml at 3.16 ± 0.75 h. The elimination half‐life (T1/2 elim (h)) was 26.51 ± 6.86 h. The area under the curve (AUC 0‐∞) was 3723.50 ± 1213.08 ng h/ml. The mean residence time (MRT) was 38.82 ± 8.93 h. Background: Working farm dogs are invaluable on New Zealand sheep and beef farms. To date no study describing farm dog population and health has included information about incidence of illness and injury, or risk factors affecting health and career duration. This paper describes the methodology and initial results from TeamMate, a longitudinal study that was designed to address this gap. We describe the study population, husbandry practices, and prevalence of clinical abnormalities on enrolment. Methods: Data about the farms, owners, husbandry practices and dogs were collected on farm at approximately 6-month intervals. All dogs over 18 months old and in full work were enrolled. Dogs were given physical examinations by veterinarians. On examination all abnormalities were noted, regardless of clinical significance. Results: Six hundred forty-one working farm dogs and 126 owners were enrolled from the South Island of New Zealand. Forty-nine percent of dogs were Heading dogs (314 of 641) and 48% Huntaways (308 of 641). Median age of dogs was 4 years (range 1.5–14) and median body condition score (BCS) was four on a 9-point scale (interquartile range (IQR) 3–5). Fifty-four percent of dogs were male (345 of 641), and 6% (41 of 641) were neutered. Eighty-one percent of owners (102 of 126) fed dogs commercial biscuits and meat sourced on farm. Forty-four percent of dogs (279 of 641) had bedding in their kennel, 14% (55 of 393) had insulated kennels, 69% (442 of 641) had been vaccinated and 33% (213 of 641) were insured. Clinical abnormalities were found in 74% of dogs (475 of 641). Common abnormalities involved the musculoskeletal system (43%, 273 of 641), skin (including scars and callouses; 42%, 272 of 641), and oral cavity (including worn and broken teeth; 35%, 227 of 641). Conclusions: Our results expand on those from previous surveys and indicate that musculoskeletal illness and injury, and skin trauma are the most commonly seen clinical abnormalities in working farm dogs. AIMS: To determine current practices and attitudes towards vaccination of dogs and cats of veterinarians in New Zealand; the methods used for informing clients on which vaccines to use, and the preferred site for vaccination of cats. METHODS: A postal questionnaire was sent to all 483 listed veterinary practices in New Zealand during February 2012. Some questions were specific to pet dogs, cats, or working farm dogs. Responses were categorised according to practice type and geographical region of the respondent. Factors associated with respondent recommendation of annual vaccination with modified live viral (MLV) vaccines were examined using logistic regression analysis. Vaccines that were considered to be essential for every animal were defined as core; those that may be recommended for animals whose location or lifestyle placed them at risk, were defined as non-core. RESULTS: There were 204 useable returns, equivalent to a response rate of 42.2%, distributed across the country. Annual vaccination with MLV vaccines of dogs was recommended by 54/198 (27.3%) respondents, and of cats by 107/181 (59.1%) respondents. Factors associated with the recommendation of annual administration of MLV vaccines to dogs included being a companion animal practice, a desire for policies on vaccination to be left to individual clinics, and having one veterinarian in the practice. Administration of the final vaccination for puppies was recommended at ≥14 weeks old by 55/185 (29.7%) respondents, and for kittens at ≥13 weeks old by 42/183 (23%) respondents. Of respondents that administered MLV vaccines annually, 62/103 (60.2%) believed reducing the frequency of vaccination would reduce income, and 52/103 (50.5%) considered it would have a negative effect on animal health. Advice to enable clients to decide which non-core vaccines were administered was given by 181/199 (91%) respondents. Factors considered when recommending a vaccine included consideration of risk to individual patients (190/203; 93.6%), requirements of boarding kennels/catteries (165/203; 81.3%) and clinic vaccination policy (142/203; 70%). The preferred site for administering MLV vaccines to cats was the dorsal neck or inter-scapular region (137/198; 69.2%). Amongst respondents, 18 wanted disease surveillance information to allow for truly informed decisions to be made about vaccination. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Veterinarians can now compare their own vaccination practices and attitudes with those of veterinarians nationally, and internationally. There is a need for national surveillance information and for continued education of the public and commercial kennel and cattery owners for optimal vaccination strategies to be developed. The article discusses a study of the prognosis for a return to work of working farm dogs in New Zealand that underwent partial tarsal arthrodesis (PTA). The researchers identified 14 dogs using medical records of Masset University Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Veterinary Specialist Orthopaedic Services and assessed their ability to work after surgery. They found that 50 percent of the dogs could go back to work duties after undergoing PTA.

The article focuses on the New Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Association (NZSDTA) study on working farm dogs in New Zealand. NZSDTA sent out questionnaires for the survey to its members in August 2007, in which breed, weight and sex of working dogs were collected together with information about the farm. The results of the survey disclosed that Heading dogs are the most common breed used as working dogs in New Zealand and that males are more preferred than females. Their diet was found to be a combination of dry food and homekill.

The article presents a clinical study on four working dogs with intra-thoracic pyogranulomatous disease in New Zealand. It states that the farm dogs were presented to veterinarians for thoracic wall swelling and weight loss. Findings of the study indicate that two of them were confirmed with Actinomyces viscosus, the third was suspected with Nocardia or Actinomyces infection while the fourth had streptococcal infection.

The article presents a study which aims to determine whether unilateral pancarpal arthrodesis (PCA) using a dorsal hybrid-plating method can return the abilities of working dogs with carpal injuries in New Zealand. Findings of the study indicate that after 12 months of treatment through the method, 83% of dogs could perform their tasks normally. It also shows that 75% of the owners were satisfied with the results and 92% of them stated that the surgery conformed to their expectations.

The article presents a survey which investigates particular diseases affecting working farm dogs in New Zealand. Findings indicate that trauma was determined as the cause of injury in 848 visits. It notes other causes of death which include automotive incidents, transit across fence lines and dog bites. It also indicates the nontraumatic reasons of loss including degenerative joint disease, poisoning and mammary neoplasia.

The article presents a study which discusses the effects of feeding diets on working farm dogs in New Zealand. It states that the test diets vary in macronutrients' proportions on digestibility, large intestinal fermentation of carbohydrate and post-prandial endocrine responses. Findings indicate that low-carbohydrate and high-protein diet has appeared to be beneficial to some farm dogs, particularly to those subjected to a lengthy exercise requirement.

Simple Summary: Previous research in New Zealand on working sheep dogs has found that 39% suffered from retinal eye disease. One of the causes of this eye disease is parasite migration to the eye. Since that research was published in 1987, farmers have been educated to regularly treat farm dogs with anti-parasitic tablets. However, there has been no follow-up studies to see if eye disease is still a problem in working farm dogs. Our study investigated whether eye disease is still present in working sheep dogs in South-West, Waikato, New Zealand. Our study of 184 working sheep dogs and 51 owners was undertaken in 2010, with owners sampled from New Zealand's South-West Waikato and Tux North Island Dog Trial Championship. Eye examinations were performed on all of the dogs that participated. This study identified that 24% (44/184) of the dogs in the study showed evidence of retinal eye disease. Male working sheep dogs are more susceptible to develop retinal eye disease than females for unidentified reasons. This study concluded that retinal eye disease is still present in working sheep dogs in New Zealand. A study in conducted 1987 by Hughes et al., found that 39% of working sheep dogs had multifocal retinitis. One of the identified causes was ocular larval migrans, which were a result of migrating ascarid larvae. Since that paper was published, anthelmintic use in farm dogs has been highly recommended. There has been no follow-up study to determine if fundic lesions are still present. The current study aimed to investigate the prevalence of chorioretinopathy in working sheep dogs in the South-West, Waikato, New Zealand. This was a cross-sectional study of 184 working sheep dogs and 51 owners, undertaken in 2010 with owners sampled from New Zealand's South-West Waikato and Tux North Island Dog Trial Championship. Two-way tables were used to explore the relationship between variables. Significance of association was assessed using a Chi-squared or Fisher exact test as appropriate, with a p-value of <0.05 considered significant. Overall prevalence of chorioretinopathy in the working sheep dogs was 44/184 (24%). A significantly higher prevalence of chorioretinopathy was shown in dogs with increasing age, from 2 years to >8 years (p = 0.0007) and in males (p < 0.0001). Simple Summary: Working farm dogs are essential to many livestock farmers, but little is known about what increases their risk of being lost from the workforce through dying, being euthanized or being retired. A study carried out in New Zealand found that the majority of farm dogs that were lost from work during a four-year period died or were euthanized rather than being retired, and owners reported that acute injuries or illnesses were the most common cause. However, 65% of dogs that died or were retired were at least seven and 38% at least 10 years old, showing that working farm dogs often work into their old age. Data from physical examinations performed by veterinarians showed that lameness almost doubled dogs' risk of being lost from work, independently of their age. Our results show that further research into what causes lameness in working farm dogs, and how this lameness can be avoided, could make a significant positive impact on the health and welfare of these dogs. Working farm dogs are essential to many livestock farmers. Little is known about factors that influence dogs' risk of being lost from work. This paper explores risk factors for farm dogs being lost through death, euthanasia and retirement. All enrolled dogs were working and a minimum of 18 months old. Five data collection rounds were performed over four years. Data about dogs were collected from owners and dogs were given physical examinations by veterinarians. Dogs that were lost from work were counted and owner-reported reasons for loss were recorded. Multivariable logistic regression modelling was used to investigate risk factors for loss. Of 589 dogs, 81 were lost from work. Of these, 59 dogs died or were euthanized and 22 were retired. Farm dogs tended to reach advanced ages, with 38% being 10 years or older when last examined. Acute injury or illness was the most commonly owner-reported reason for loss. Age group (p < 0.0001) and lameness (p = 0.04, OR = 1.8) significantly affected dogs' risk of being lost. These results expand our knowledge about factors that affect health, welfare and work in farm dogs. Simple Summary: Working farm dogs may be at more risk of infection with gastrointestinal parasites than pet dogs, as they are fed raw meat and are in close contact with other dogs. This study determined the percentage of working farm dogs in New Zealand shedding intestinal parasite stages in their feces and explored what factors might increase or decrease the chance of parasites being in a dog's feces. One person collected information about the dogs and their management using a questionnaire, body condition scored each dog, and collected a fecal sample to test for parasites. The study found that four out of ten dogs had one or more types of gastrointestinal parasites present in their feces, and this was more common in younger dogs. There was no association between the presence of parasites in feces and frequency that owners reported giving dogs anthelmintic drugs. The high percentage of dogs with parasite lifecycle stages present in their feces is of concern for the health of the dogs and also the owners as some parasites are zoonotic. Working farm dogs in New Zealand may have a high parasitic challenge because of access to raw meat and close contact with other dogs. This cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the percentage of dogs with gastrointestinal nematode and protozoan parasite lifecycle stages present in their feces and to identify factors associated with the presence of parasites. A single researcher collected information about the dogs and their management via a questionnaire, body condition scored (BCS) the dogs, and collected fecal samples to determine the parasite burden. Fecal samples were collected from 171 dogs and 40% (95% CI 33.0% to 47.7%) contained parasite ova or (oo)cysts. There was no association between BCS and the presence of nematodes and parasites (p = 0.74) in the feces. The percentage of dogs with parasites present in their feces was not associated with BCS or the frequency with which anthelmintic drugs were reportedly administered (p = 0.61). The high percentage of dogs with parasites are of concern for the health of the dogs and their owners, given the zoonotic potential of some parasites. Aim: To report the long-term outcome, return to work and owner satisfaction, for working farm dogs in New Zealand following surgical repair of humeral condylar fractures., Methods: A retrospective study of working dogs that had undergone surgical repair of one or more condylar fractures of the humerus was undertaken by searching the medical records of two referral veterinary clinics. The inclusion criteria were working dogs that had undergone open surgical reduction and internal fixation of a fracture of one or both humeral condyles. The ability of the dog to work after surgery, persistence of lameness and the owners' degree of satisfaction with the outcome were assessed from answers to a questionnaire., Results: Sixteen dogs met the inclusion criteria and had owner questionnaires completed at a median follow-up interval of 54 (min 3, max 121) months. Fifteen were working farm dogs (13 Heading dogs, including Border Collies, and two New Zealand Huntaways) and one dog was a cross-breed used for pig hunting. Four dogs had two fractures on separate occasions, of which three underwent surgery on both elbows at a median interval of 19 months. Of the 20 humeral fractures, 10 were lateral condylar, one was a medial condylar fracture and nine were dicondylar fractures. Of the 16 repairs with follow-up data, seven (44%) dogs could perform all expected duties following surgical repair, whilst a further eight (50%) could perform most duties although some allowances had to be made for some limitation of their performance. Of the 15 owners responding, 13 (87%) were satisfied or very satisfied with the outcome of surgery and felt the surgery was worth the expense. Post-operative complications requiring a second surgery occurred in 7/20 (35%) dogs, and all six dogs that received appropriate surgical revision returned to work., Conclusions: In this small case series, surgical repair of humeral condylar fractures in working dogs had a good prognosis with 15/16 of treated dogs returning to full or substantial levels of work., Clinical Relevance: These data provide veterinarians with relevant information regarding the outcome and prognosis of surgery for clients whose working dogs have fractured a humeral condyle.
