The effects of the Second World War on food insecurity in Africa have gained scholarly attention over the past few years; however, there have been no comprehensive attempts to provide historical evidence and analyze the experience of food insecurity in the colonial territories that later transformed into Southern Nigeria. This article fills this gap in research and argues that the demands of the British colonial government for food supplies, along with other policies geared toward agricultural regulation such as the Pullen Scheme, led to such inflation of food prices in urban centers that rural producers could not meet the demand for foodstuffs. The resulting food shortage triggered reactions from indigenous peoples, particularly market women in the southern and eastern provinces of colonial Nigeria. The study addressed flood-induced food insecurity and coping strategies in agrarian South-eastern Nigeria. Data were collected from 400 households in 8 communities. Food (in)security was measured using Household Food Security Survey Module (HFSSM) and 92.8% households were found to be food insecure. The most adopted coping strategies were compromising food quantity and quality namely; skipping meals; reducing meal frequency and reducing meal portion size in descending order. The study revealed a gender-based disparity in coping strategies adopted between female- and male-headed households and this has been linked to income and asset poverty gaps including differential household food insecurity levels. The coping strategies adopted were self-devised strategies that provided short-term means of survival in times of food shortages. Thus, policy measures, such as social security and food safety nets that are sustainable are recommended to reduce vulnerability to flood-induced food insecurity, thereby improving adaptation to help achieve Goal 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The study sought to establish the effect of food shortage caused by displacement of farmers in Benue state and the support services offered by libraries during the emergency circumstances of displaced farmers in Nigeria and Benue State in particular. This study sought to establish the effect of food shortage in Benue state caused by displacement of farmers. The study proposes that libraries cannot afford to close down their services of providing information to the users about the plights of farmers and the effect of these crises on food shortage. During displacement, libraries can provide mobile services and relevant information sources that would satisfy the information needs of internally displaced farmers. The study findings established that food shortage in Benue State was as a result displacement of people who are mostly farmers. The study reviewed Strategies which librarians can adopt to remain relevant in the face of food shortage caused by displacement of farmers. Majority, of the studies were conducted in other fields, thus creating a gap in research of the role of librarians on this matter. We conclude that, while food systems were exempt, they were not immune to the fact that food shortage is caused by displacement, protecting food supplies should be a priority alongside the displacement of the farmers involved. Based on the findings, strategies such as Creation of sensitization, Use of Social media networks, engaging relevant stake holders, were identified as ways in which librarians can adopt to reach out to displaced farmers. • Geographic information system has been used to Prepare a groundwater vulnerability map of the study area using DRASTIC Model. • The impact of pipeline interdiction to the underlying aquifers of the study area has been highlighted. • The ROC/AUC curves and PAHs has been used to validate DRASTIC Model. Extensive environmental pollution has affected the water resource, agricultural lands, economy and health of the inhabitants of Ahoada communities of the Niger Delta region, Nigeria. The main sources of pollution are oil spills emanating from pipeline interdiction and production-related spillages. Oil spills in the Niger Delta adversely affects the physical, chemical and biological properties of soil, which subsequently results in food shortages due to the reduction of nutrient contents of soils. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the patterns and the types of contaminants for appropriate remediation of the polluted areas. This study applied a novel DRASTIC model approach, incorporating a data-driven method Weight of Evidence (WoE) to examine subsurface aquifer vulnerability to oil spills contamination and present same as in the maps. Geographic Information System (GIS) in combination with DRASTIC and a modified DRASTIC model called DRAPSTIC were used in assessing the extent and vulnerability of the aquifers of the area to contamination. The maps of the DRAPSTIC show similarity in terms of the distribution and classification of the vulnerability index. Very high and high vulnerability classes covered larger areas in Ahoada east under DRAPSTIC compared to DRASTIC. The importance of food and nutrition for family health and wellbeing in the Nigerian society cannot be overemphasized; it is the live wire of human existence. Nigeria over the years has depended on massive importation of food stuff to meet up with food demands of her thickening population. This paper discussed the role of food and nutrition in achieving sustainable developmental goal 2030 through food security in Nigeria. This has become necessary because no meaningful development can take place in a country where her citizenry are unhealthy due to food shortage. Adequacy in food production in Nigeria can lead to unprecedented economic growth, which would assist in the actualization of the MDG target of eradicating extreme hunger in Nigeria. It was noted that the loss of agricultural sector to the oil boom of the 1970s and insecurity that permeates and envelopes farming communities across the nation is a major setback to food security. The agricultural sector is now being crowded by only peasant farmers whom are also been hindered by insecurity. This is unlike when farming was highly commercialized and cash-crops were being exported for foreign exchange; thereby making food to be available for the Nigerian populace. The study therefore recommends that the Nigerian government should bounce back to reposition the agricultural sector and also tackle the problem of insecurity hindering farmers from their agricultural activities so as to foster sustainable developmental goal through food security in Nigeria. Using an improved food poverty line, this paper provides the first dynamic food poverty analysis for Nigeria, accounting for urban‐rural income and price differentials. Estimates from the General Household Survey (GHS) longitudinal data reveal that about half of the population was food‐poor in 2013. The proportion of the population that slipped into food poverty within the periods under study (2010–13) far outweighs those that moved out of food poverty. After controlling for households' socio‐economic and demographic characteristics in a multivariate analysis, large initial household size, unemployment, and low levels of initial education are identified as key factors that keep households in food poverty over time. • We investigate the impact of agricultural productivity on experience-based measures of food security among Nigerian households. • Experience-based measures of food security capture the diversity of diets, food shortage, and other aspects of food security, including psychological and behavioral manifestations of insecure food access. • In Nigeria, the agricultural sector contributed about 22.35% to the nation's gross domestic product during 2021. • Almost 70% of Nigerians engage in farming for subsistence purposes. • The study uses three waves of data (2010–2016) from the living standards measurement study—integrated surveys on agriculture (LSMS–ISA). • An increase in agricultural productivity increases food security, as measured by experience-based indicators. In this study, we use panel data, three waves (2010–2016), to investigate the impact of agricultural productivity on experience-based measures of food security among Nigerian households. Experience-based measures of food security capture the diversity of diets, food shortage, and other aspects of food security, including psychological and behavioral manifestations of insecure food access. In Nigeria, the agricultural sector contributed about 22.35% to the nation's gross domestic product during 2021. In addition, almost 70% of Nigerians engage in farming for subsistence purposes, with climate change and poor irrigation systems affecting their agricultural productivity. Consistent with previous work linking higher agricultural productivity with better welfare outcomes among Nigerian households, we find that an increase in agricultural productivity increases food security as measured by experience-based indicators. Specifically, a 10% growth in agricultural productivity decreases the likelihood of (i) relying on less preferred foods, (ii) limiting the variety of food eaten, and (iii) limiting portion size at mealtimes by 3.7%, 3.9%, and 1.9%, respectively. This paper examines the food security situation in Nigeria and reasons that unending communal conflicts under the transformation agenda will not guaranteefood security, which is a crucial aspect of the programme.
