Steroid hormones are one of the presumed modulators of Lactobacillus abundance in the vaginal epithelium. We set out to characterize the vaginal microbiome (VMB) and also provide an in-depth understanding of the relative contribution of estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P1) in shaping the vaginal microbiome of Nigerian women (n = 38) who experienced both uncomplicated term delivery and preterm delivery using samples longitudinally collected during pregnancy (17-21, 27-31, 36-41 weeks gestation) and 6 weeks postpartum. Vaginal swabs and blood samples were aseptically collected. Vaginal swabs were used for microbiome assessment using 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing. Blood samples were used for hormonal measurement using a competitive-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Across several maternal covariates, maternal age, pregnancy status and delivery mode were not significantly associated with the vaginal microbiota whereas maternal E2 level (p E2  = 0.006, Omnibus), and P1 level (p P1  = 0.001, Omnibus) were significantly associated with the vaginal microbiome. E2 and P1 concentrations increased throughout pregnancy commensurately with increasing proportions of L. crispatus (p E2  = 0.036, p P1  = 0.034, Linear Mixed Model). An increasing trend of α-diversity was also observed as pregnancy progressed (p observed ASV  = 0.006, LMM). A compositional microbiome shift from Lactobacillus profile to non-Lactobacillus profile was observed in most postnatal women (p CST IV  < 0.001, LMM). Objectives: To determine if the presence of microorganisms in follicular fluid of women undergoing in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) adversely affects the outcome of the treatment cycles., Methods: Follicular fluid was collected from 86 women enrolled for IVF-ET at the National Hospital, Abuja from June 1, 2018 to December 1, 2018. Microscopy imaging and cultures were performed to identify bacteria and fungi in the follicular fluid and the vagina. Women with follicular fluid microorganisms were the test group while the controls were those without follicular fluid microorganisms. Fertilization and pregnancy rates were subsequently determined and their association with the presence of follicular fluid microorganisms was assessed using univariable and multivariable logistic regression modelling., Results: The mean age and mean Body Mass Index (BMI) of the participants were 35(± 3.5) years and 28(± 4.9) kg/m2 respectively. Bacteria and fungi were isolated in 17% of the follicular fluid samples collected (n = 15/86). Most common isolates were Streptococcus spp. (n = 4/15), Staphylococcus aureus (n = 7/15), Enterococcus spp. (n = 4/15), Lactobacillus species (n = 2/15) and Candida albicans (n = 2/15). There was no statistically significant difference in the fertilization rates (adjusted odds ratio [AdjOR] 0.55, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.04-7.34; P = 0.10) and pregnancy rates (AdjOR 4.02, 95% CI 0.56-28.92; P = 0.19) between the group of women with positive follicular fluid bacterial /fungal colonization as compared against those with negative follicular fluid colonization., Conclusion: Isolation of microorganisms from follicular fluid did not adversely affect fertilization and pregnancy rates following IVF-ET treatment cycles at the fertility centre of National Hospital, Abuja., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

The vaginal microbiota is thought to play a role in modulating risk of high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) infection. We examined the relationship between the vaginal microbiota and persistent hrHPV infection in HIV-negative and HIV-positive women. We used 16S-rRNA sequencing to characterize the vaginal microbiota of two serial samples taken six months apart from 211 Nigerian women (67%, 142/211 HIV-positive and 33%, 69/211 HIV-negative) and evaluated the association between the vaginal microbiota and persistent hrHPV infection using generalized estimating equation logistic regression models and linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) algorithm to identify phylotypic biomarkers of persistent hrHPV infection. The high diversity microbiota, Community State Type IV-B, was the most prevalent in both HIV-negative (38% at baseline, 30% at the follow-up visit) and HIV-positive (27% at baseline, 35% at the follow-up visit) women. The relationship between the vaginal microbiota and persistent hrHPV was modified by HIV status. In HIV-negative women, women with Lactobacillus dominant microbiota had lower odds (OR: 0.35, 95% CI 0.14-0.89, p = 0.03) of persistent hrHPV compared to women with Lactobacillus deficient microbiota. While among HIV-positive women, the odds of being persistently infected with hrHPV was higher in women with Lactobacillus dominant microbiota (OR: 1.25, 95% CI 0.73-2.14 p = 0.41). This difference in effect estimates by HIV was statistically significant (p = 0.02). A high diversity vaginal microbial community with paucity of Lactobacillus species was associated with persistent hrHPV infection in HIV-negative women but not in HIV-positive women.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of maternal recto-vaginal extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Enterobacteriacea (ESBL-E) colonization, identify risk factors for maternal and neonatal ESBL-E colonization, and subsequent impact on neonatal mortality., Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital from April 2016 to May 2017. Maternal-neonatal pairs were screened for ESBL-E exposure at time of delivery. Neonatal mortality was assessed at 28 days., Results: A total of 1161 singleton deliveries were evaluated. In total, 9.7% (113/1161) of mothers and 4.3% (50/1161) of infants had ESBL-E-positive cultures at delivery. Maternal antibiotic exposure was associated with ESBL-E recto-vaginal colonization (18.6% (21/113) vs. 8.4% (88/1048), p < 0.001)). Maternal ESBL-E colonization (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 14.85; 95% CI 7.83-28.15) and vaginal delivery (AOR 6.35; 95% CI 2.63-17.1) were identified as a risk factor for positive ESBL-E neonatal surface cultures. Neonatal positive ESBL-E surface cultures were a risk factor for neonatal mortality (stillbirths included, AOR 4.84; 95% CI 1.44-16.31). The finding that maternal ESBL-E recto-vaginal colonization appeared protective in regards to neonatal mortality (AOR 0.22; 95% CI .06-0.75) requires further evaluation., Conclusions: Maternal ESBL-E recto-vaginal colonization is an independent risk factor for neonatal ESBL-E colonization and neonates with positive ESBL-E surface cultures were identified as having increased risk of neonatal mortality., (Copyright © 2019 European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Background: To compare the pattern of vaginal microflora during pregnancy with pattern in early labour using Nugent scoring and determine the effect of these changes on fetal outcome., Design: A prospective longitudinal study., Setting and Population: Pregnant women attending antenatal clinics of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, Nigeria between June 2017 and May 2018., Methods: Consenting pregnant women who attended antenatal clinics were recruited. Vaginal secretions were obtained for Nugent scoring during pregnancy and at presentation in labour., Main Outcome Measures: Prevalence of abnormal vaginal flora in pregnancy and early labour, birth outcome, birth weight, gestational age at delivery, APGAR scores, need for neonatal ward admission., Results: Sixty-seven (33.3%) of pregnant women had abnormal flora which was consistent with bacterial vaginosis. At the presentation of these women in labour, 14.4% of them had bacterial vaginosis thus indicating a significant reduction in abnormal vaginal flora in labour compared to the proportion of abnormal flora in antenatal period (P<0.001). There were no significant differences in the fetal outcomes of mothers with bacterial vaginosis when compared with those with normal vaginal flora (P-value >0.05)., Conclusions: Persistence of abnormal vaginal microflora from pregnancy till early labour did not seem to be associated with poorer foetal outcomes when compared with women with normal vaginal microflora in labour. The composition of vagina lactic acid bacteria (LAB) differs within the different ethnic group. This study is aimed at determining the prevalence of LAB with their antimicrobial properties in Nigerian women's vagina during different stages of the menstrual cycle. Microorganisms were isolated from vaginal swabs of ten Nigerian women during different stages of the menstrual cycle and identified by partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The antimicrobial properties of the LAB were tested against the multidrug-resistant uropathogens. The prevalence of LAB was higher during ovulation period while during menstruation period, it declined. Twenty-five LAB isolates were identified as three species, namely: Lactobacillus plantarum (15), Lactobacillus fermentum (9), Lactobacillus brevis (1) and one acetic acid bacteria - Acetobacter pasteurianus . The LAB had antimicrobial activities against the three uropathogens with zones of inhibition from 8 to 22 mm. The presence of LAB inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus sp. GF01 also in the co-culture. High LAB counts were found during ovulation period with L. plantarum as a dominant species while during menstruation, there was a decrease in the LAB counts. In this study, we evaluated the association between high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) and the vaginal microbiome. Participants were recruited in Nigeria between April and August 2012. Vaginal bacterial composition was characterized by deep sequencing of barcoded 16S rRNA gene fragments (V4) on Illumina MiSeq and HPV was identified using the Roche Linear Array® HPV genotyping test. We used exact logistic regression models to evaluate the association between community state types (CSTs) of vaginal microbiota and hrHPV infection, weighted UniFrac distances to compare the vaginal microbiota of individuals with prevalent hrHPV to those without prevalent hrHPV infection, and the Linear Discriminant Analysis effect size (LEfSe) algorithm to characterize bacteria associated with prevalent hrHPV infection. We observed four CSTs: CST IV-B with a low relative abundance of Lactobacillus spp. in 50% of participants; CST III (dominated by L. iners) in 39·2%; CST I (dominated by L. crispatus) in 7·9%; and CST VI (dominated by proteobacteria) in 2·9% of participants. LEfSe analysis suggested an association between prevalent hrHPV infection and a decreased abundance of Lactobacillus sp. with increased abundance of anaerobes particularly of the genera Prevotella and Leptotrichia in HIV-negative women (P < 0·05). These results are hypothesis generating and further studies are required.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis among women with tubal factor infertility., Methods: A cross-sectional prospective study of women with tubal factor infertility was conducted at a Nigerian teaching hospital between March and September 2014. An equal number of fertile women attending the family planning clinic were recruited as controls. Interviews were conducted to collect data on sociodemographic characteristics, history and characteristics of vaginal discharge, knowledge, and practices. Bacterial vaginosis was diagnosed using the Amsel criteria. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to determine predisposing factors., Results: Overall, 178 women with tubal factor infertility were recruited. Bacterial vaginosis was noted in 50 (28.1%) of these women, compared with 14 (7.9%) of 178 fertile women (P < 0.001). Patients with tubal factor infertility had an increased risk of bacterial vaginosis when they were of low socioeconomic class (OR 11.89; 95% CI 5.20-27.69), practiced vaginal douching (OR 19.15; 95% CI 7.26-47.75), used vaginal drying agents (OR 17.04; 95% CI 6.91-43.24), had an early sexual debut (OR 32.08; 95% CI 12.02-88.89), and had a history of sexually transmitted infections (OR 12.42; 95% CI 5.36-29.35)., Conclusion: The prevalence of bacterial vaginosis was high among patients with tubal factor infertility. The vaginal microbiota, in particular Lactobacillus species, play an important role in female health through modulation of immunity, countering pathogens and maintaining a pH below 4.7. We report the isolation and genome sequence of Lactobacillus pentosus strain KCA1 (formally known as L. plantarum) from the vagina of a healthy Nigerian woman. The genome was sequenced using Illumina GA II technology. The resulting 16,920,226 paired-end reads were assembled with the Velvet tool. Contigs were annotated using the RAST server, and manually curated. A comparative analysis with the available genomes of L. pentosus IG1 and L. plantarum WCFS1 showed that over 15% of the predicted functional activities are found only in this strain. The strain has a chromosome sequence of 3,418,159 bp with a G+C content of 46.4%, and is devoid of plasmids. Novel gene clusters or variants of known genes relative to the reference genomes were found. In particular, the strain has loci encoding additional putative mannose phosphotransferase systems. Clusters of genes include those for utilization of hydantoin, isopropylmalate, malonate, rhamnosides, and genes for assimilation of polyglycans, suggesting the metabolic versatility of L. pentosus KCA1. Loci encoding putative phage defense systems were also found including clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPRs), abortive infection (Abi) systems and toxin-antitoxin systems (TA). A putative cluster of genes for biosynthesis of a cyclic bacteriocin precursor, here designated as pentocin KCA1 (penA) were identified. These findings add crucial information for understanding the genomic and geographic diversity of vaginal lactobacilli.

The prevalence of bovine venereal campylobacteriosis (BVC) was investigated in the Lake Chad basin of Nigeria. Preputial washings and cervico-vaginal mucus samples were obtained from 270 cattle presenting a history of abortion and lowered fertility, kept in traditional and institutional farms. All the samples investigated were cultured using standard bacteriological technique. Campylobacter fetus was isolated from six bulls and four cows. In all cattle sampled, the isolation rates were 2.2% for C. fetus subsp. venerealis and 1.5% for C. fetus subsp. fetus; the herd and within-herd prevalence rates for C. fetus were 22.2% and 3.4%, respectively, while the overall active infectivity rate was 3.7%. BVC probably contributes to lowered fertility and abortions found in cattle in the Lake Chad basin of Nigeria, associated more with C. fetus subsp. venerealis than C. fetus subsp. fetus.

Human ureaplasma previously had one species known as Ureaplasma urealyticum but was recently separated into 2 species, U. urealyticum and U. parvum. This study was carried out to separate the ureaplasma strains isolated from women attending a tertiary-care hospital in Nigeria. Thirty (30) Ureaplasma strains isolated from the vaginal tracts of 13 pregnant and 17 non-pregnant women were assayed. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was employed using two primer pairs: UMS-170/UMA-263 specific for U. urealyticum and UMS-57/UMA-222 specific for U. parvum. The positivity bands of the primer pairs were 476 bp and 326 bp for U. urealyticum and U. parvum respectively. All isolates were found to be U. urealyticumn (100%). Eleven (84.6%) of the 13 U. urealyticum from pregnant women were from asymptomatic women while from the non-pregnant women; 6 (35.3%) were from women with complaint of infertility problems; 5 (29.4%) from those who complained of vaginal discharge, one (5.9%) was asymptomatic while the remaining 5 (29.4%) had various other complaints. U. urealyticum is thus the prevalent species of Ureaplasma among pregnant and non-pregnant women in the study population and this to the best of our knowledge is a pioneer study to speciate human ureaplasmas in this country.

Objective: Against the background of genital mycoplasmas being implicated as pathogens in the genital tracts of adult humans, this study was carried out to determine the prevalence of genital mycoplasmas among women of reproductive age attending a tertiary-care hospital in Nigeria., Methods: One hundred and sixty-eight high vaginal specimens from 114 pregnant and 54 non-pregnant women with or without complaints were studied for the presence of genital mycoplasmas using selective bacteriological culture techniques. Isolates were identified biochemically and serologically., Results: Sixty (35.7 %) isolates of genital mycoplasmas were obtained from the study population. Identification showed 30 (17.9%) as Mycoplasma species, 13(7.7%) as Ureaplasma species and 17(10.1%) were positive for both organisms. Thirteen (11.4%) ureaplasma isolates were from pregnant women and 17 (31.5%) from non-pregnant women (p< 0.05). Thirty-eight (80.8%) of the Mycoplasma species were identified as Mycoplasma hominis, 6(12.8%) as M.fermentans and 3(6.4%) as M. penetrans. High prevalence of the Mycoplasma species were obtained from asymptomatic pregnant women (84.8%) while the Ureaplasma species were found more from symptomatic non-pregnant women- 35.3 % from infertility patients, 29.4% from those with vaginal discharge and 29.4% from those with other gynaecological complaints., Conclusion: These findings could be important since genital mycoplasmas have been associated with various adverse conditions especially in pregnant women and neonates while Ureaplasma species have been implicated in infertility. Their specific roles need further investigations.

This study enrolled 125 premenopausal women diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis (BV) by presence of vaginal irritation, discharge and 'fishy' odor, and Nugent criteria and detection of sialidase enzyme. The subjects were treated with oral metronidazole (500 mg) twice daily from days 1 to 7, and randomized to receive oral Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 (1 x 10(9)) and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 (1 x 10(9)) or placebo twice daily from days 1 to 30. Primary outcome was cure of BV as determined by normal Nugent score, negative sialidase test and no symptoms or signs of BV at day 30. A total of 106 subjects returned for 30-day follow-up, of which 88% were cured in the antibiotic/probiotic group compared to 40% in the antibiotic/placebo group (p<0.001). Of the remaining subjects, 30% subjects in the placebo group and none in the probiotic group had BV, while 30% in the placebo and 12% in the probiotic group fell into the intermediate category based upon Nugent score, sialidase result and clinical findings. High counts of Lactobacillus sp. (>10(5) CFU/ml) were recovered from the vagina of 96% probiotic-treated subjects compared to 53% controls at day 30. In summary, this study showed efficacious use of lactobacilli and antibiotic in the eradication of BV in black African women.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine whether Lactobacillus species found in African women differ substantially to those of white decent, described in previous studies. The vaginal microbiota play an important role in female health, and when the naturally dominant lactobacilli are displaced resulting in bacterial vaginosis (BV), the host is more at risk of acquiring sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV., Methods: Vaginal samples were collected from 241 healthy, premenopausal Nigerian women, which were then Gram-stained for Nugent scoring. Microbial DNA was extracted, amplified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Lactobacillus primers, and processed by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Lactobacillus species were identified by DNA sequencing and BLAST algorithm., Results: Of the samples, 207 (85.8%) had PCR products for lactobacilli, whereas 34 (14.2%) showed absence of lactobacilli, which correlated to the BV Nugent scores. On sequencing of amplicons, 149 subjects (72%) had sequence homologies to lactobacilli. Most women (64%) were colonized by L. iners as the predominant strain, similar to previous findings in Canadian and Swedish women. L. gasseri was found in 7.3% samples, followed by L. plantarum, L. suntoryeus, L. crispatus, L. rhamnosus, and other species., Conclusion: The findings indicate that even with geographic, racial, and other differences, the predominant vaginal Lactobacillus species is similar to species in women from Northern countries.

This paper reports on a sporadic, naturally acquired infection of sheep with Brucella abortus on a privately owned farm in Toro near Bauchi, Nigeria. The abortions, which occurred in a flock of 28 Yankassa sheep, involved five ewes at the third month of gestation. Serum and milk samples from the flock were examined for Brucella antibodies by the Rose Bengal plate test, serum agglutination test (SAT) and milk ring test (MRT). The proportion shown as positive by SAT was 14.3%. All the five milk samples examined by MRT were positive. A total of seven isolates of Brucella were obtained from three milk samples and four vaginal swabs collected from aborting ewes. All isolates were identified and biotyped as B. abortus biovar 1. This biovar was also isolated from cattle maintained on the farm in association with the sheep. The infection was attributed to the animal husbandry practices employed on the farm.

Semi-quantitative and qualitative bacterial assessment of the vaginal and cervical flora of a total of 202 women was carried out over a period of six months to determine the bacterial flora in three groups of women and changes caused by prior use of antibiotics. The number was made up of 32 healthy volunteers, 80 women with gynaecological problems and 90 women with gynaecological infections who had had antibiotic treatment prior to this study. Standard methods were used for the investigations. Five main genera of anaerobic bacteria were isolated from all patients. They included, the Bacteroides spp., Prevotella spp., Porphyromonas spp., Peptostreptococcus spp. and Clostridium spp. Five non-sporing gram negative anaerobic bacteria constituted the bulk of the flora including Prevotella bivia, P. disiens, P. melanogenica, P. asaccharolytica and B. fragilis. The predominant flora was P. bivia occurring in 61 pc of cervical swab specimens of the 80 women with proven gynaecological infections who had not used antibiotics and accounting for 27 pc of the total number of Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria isolated. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis were the most frequently encountered aerobic bacteria. The semi-quantitative counts of the different bacterial species in the patient group were significantly higher than in the control group of healthy individuals (p < 0,025). Similarly, prior antibiotic administration significantly reduced the population and quantitative count of the anaerobic bacteria.

Four mycoplasma-like organisms isolated from ewes with mucopurulent vaginal discharge and swollen vulva were characterised. Biochemical tests showed three of the isolates to be negative for glucose fermentation and arginine hydrolysis, while the remaining isolate was negative for glucose fermentation but hydrolysed arginine. Serological identification using the growth inhibition, growth precipitation and indirect immunofluorescence tests indicated the three similar isolates as Mycoplasma bovigenitalium and the other isolate as Mycoplasma arginini. There are apparently no previous reports of the isolation of these organisms from the genital tract of sheep in Nigeria.

Nine genera of microbes isolated from the lower genital tract of 187 women in labour in Zaria have been identified. The work was undertaken to establish the nature of microorganisms in the lower genital tract of women in labour as a basis for further study. The isolates in order of prevalence were: Candida albicans (20.9%), Klebsiella sp (15.0%), Escherichia coli (9.1%), Streptococcus faecalis (6.4%), haemolytic streptococci (other than Streptococcus pyogenes (2.7%), Streptococcus viridans (2.1%), Staphylococcus aureus (2.1%), Aeromonas hydrophila (2.1%), Proteus mirabilis (1.1%), Peptostreptococcus putridus (1.1%), Streptococcus pyogenes (0.5%), and Streptococcus pneumoniae (0.5%). Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Haemophilus sp, Lactobacillus sp, and Clostridium sp were sought but not found. Chlamydia, viruses, and T-strains of mycoplasma and trichomonas were not sought. It appears from this study that the lower genital tract of most women in Zaria at the time of labour is heavily colonised by pathogens. For this reason alone prolonged labour and trauma to the genital tract at the time of delivery should be avoided.

The incidence of carriers of Neisseria meningitidis was investigated in Borno State, an epidemic area for cerebrospinal meningitis and in Anambra State a non-epidemic area for this disease in Nigeria. The nasopharyngeal carriage rate in Maiduguri in Borno State was 18 per cent as compared with 11.8 per cent and 9.6 per cent in Nsukka and Enugu respectively in Anambra State. N. meningitidis was also isolated from anus and vagina in one and three females respectively. Majority of the isolates (71.9 per cent) belonged to serogroup B. The rare group x was recorded on two occasions. Majority of the isolates were sensitive to tetracycline, streptomycin and chloramphenicol; a few multiple drug resistant strains were also encountered.

Bacteriological studies of 500 vaginal swabs from pregnant women in second and third trimester from 4 government hospitals in Ibadan showed that 8 (1.6 per cent) were found to be culture-positive for Group B Streptococcus. Five (1.0 per cent) were found to harbour group D streptococci. All the 8 group B Streptococcus isolates were sensitive to erythromycin, methicillin, penicillin G, ampicillin and chloramphenicol in decreasing order. They were resistant to tetracycline, sulphafurazole and streptomycin.

Listeria meningitis developed in a two-day-old child whose mother harboured Listeria monocytogenes of the same serotype 4 in her vagina. Child and mother were both effectively treated with ampicillin. This is the first report of confirmed neonatal listeriosis from Nigeria.

A prospective study of group B streptococcal vaginal carriage among 225 Nigerian pregnant women in labour at UCH, Ibadan during a 3 month period in 1980 revealed a vaginal carriage rate of 19.5%; 8.9% of the 224 infants of the 218 infant-mother pair studied were colonized at birth. A significant proportion of the colonized mothers were primigravidas but no significant association was found between vaginal colonization and premature onset of labour, prolonged rupture of membranes, prolonged labour, stillbirth rate or puerperal infection. None of the twenty colonized infants developed "early" or "late" group B streptococcal disease on 3 months follow up. These results suggest the incidence of group B streptococcal disease in the newborn in Nigeria may be low despite high vaginal carriage rate.

The bacteriological research of 534 vaginal smears of pregnant women and patients of the gynaecological ward in Abeokuta showed in 21.6% beta-hem. Streptococcus group D, in 10.9% Staphylococcus epidermidis, in 5.3% Escherichia coli, in 3.6% Staphylococcus aureus, in 1.3% beta-hem. Streptococcus group B and in 7.8% yeasts. 48% of all smears remained sterile. The antibiotics with the least effect were Tetracyclines and Penicillines. Trimethoprim and Sulfonamid, Ticarcillin and Netilmycin were able to prevent the bacterial growth by at least 89%. Isolated germs of private patients showed higher resistance against Tetracycline and Chloramphenicol than those of non-private patients.

Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) removed from 50 Igbo women were subjected to bacteriologic studies. High vaginal swabs from the women were cultured simultaneously. In 49 of the 50 IUDs, the culture was negative. The author concludes that the African IUD wearer, like her Caucasian peer, can safely combat any bacterial nidus introduced during device insertion.
