Background: The aim of the study was to determine the associations between sexual identity, disability and HIV status and bullying victimisation, and a history of physical, emotional and sexual violence in Nigeria.Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a primary dataset generated through an online survey conducted between February 7 and 19, 2021. The 3197 participants for the primary study were recruited through snowballing. The dependent variables were physical, emotional and sexual violence. The independent variables were sexual identity (heterosexual and sexual minority), HIV status (negative, positive and unknown), bullying victimisation (yes/no) and living with disability (yes/no). A multivariate logistic regression model was developed for each form of IPV. Each model was adjusted for age, sex assigned at birth, marital status and education level.Results: Respondents living with HIV had higher odds for physical (AOR: 2.01; 95% CI: 1.46-2.76; p < 0.001), sexual (AOR: 2.17; 95%CI: 1.55-3.05; p < 0.001), and emotional (AOR: 1.59; 95%CI: 1.24-2.06; p < 0.001) violence. Also, those with history of bullying victimisation had higher odds for physical (AOR: 3.79; 95%CI: 2.86 - 5.68; p < 0.001), sexual (AOR: 3.05; 95%CI: 2.27 - 4.10; p < 0.001) and emotional (AOR: 2.66; 95%CI: 2.10 - 3.37; p < 0.001) violence. In addition, females had higher odds of physical (AOR: 1.52; 95%CI: 1.13-2.043; p < 0.001) and sexual (AOR: 1.83; 95%CI: 1.34 - 2.50; p < 0.001) violence; and respondents cohabiting (AOR: 1.95; 95%CI: 1.12 - 3.28; p = 0.012) had higher odds for emotional violence. Respondents who were married have significantly lower odds of experiencing physical (AOR: 0.66; 95%CI: 0.45 - 9.60; p = 0.029), sexual (AOR: 0.40; 95%CI: 0.26 - 0.62; p < 0.001) and emotional (AOR: 0.68; 95%CI: 0.50 - 0.93; p = 0.015) violence when compared to singles. Younger respondents also had lower odds of experiencing sexual violence (AOR: 0.97; 95%CI: 0.95-0.99; p = 0.016).Conclusion: HIV positive status and bullying victimisation seem to increase the risk for all forms of IPV while the experience of IPV did not differ by sexual identity and disability status. The associations between age, sex, marital status and IPV may suggest moderating roles of the factors taking cognisance of the cultural context of these relationships. Future relational analysis is necessary to further understand the pathways for the associations found between the variables in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Existing knowledge on the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in the context of Nigeria is minimal and limited to a lifelong measure of IPV experience. An abuse experienced a long time ago may not have as much negative effect as that encountered at a more proximal time to the breastfeeding phase. To this effect, we examined this relationship with maternal IPV experienced around the time of pregnancy and postpartum. Method: We analyzed data from the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. The sample includes 2668 breastfeeding mothers having a child aged under 6 months. The outcome variable was EBF or mixed-feeding (24 h recall). The exposure variables were: the maternal experience of psychological, physical, and sexual intimate partner violence. Also, there was an experience of any form of IPV and frequency score of intimate partner violence. Analysis includes chi-square and t-test bivariates, complete case and imputed logistic regressions for binary outcome. Results: In the imputed analysis, compared to mothers who experienced no IPV, those who experienced IPV had a 26% reduced likelihood of EBF practice (AOR 0.74; 95% CI 0.55, 1.00). Also, a unit dose of maternal IPV experience was associated with a 5% reduced likelihood of EBF practice (AOR 0.69; 95% CI 0.49, 0.98). Among the three forms of IPV, physical IPV had the highest effect size. Physical IPV was associated with a 37% reduced likelihood of EBF practice (AOR 0.63; 95% CI 0.44, 0.90), while psychological IPV was associated with a 34% reduced likelihood of EBF practice (AOR 0.66; 95% CI 0.47, 0.92), when compared to the respective reference groups. On the other hand, those who reported sexual IPV were just as likely to breastfeed as those who did not (AOR 0.94; 95% CI 0.62, 1.41). Conclusions: In this study, maternal IPV is associated with EBF practice. Policies aimed at promoting EBF should also be framed to combat IPV against pregnant women and nursing mothers. This article describes psychometric properties of the Gender-Based Relationship Violence Beliefs Scale (BEREVIWOS) and the Gender Stereotypes and Beliefs (GESTABE) scale in a Nigerian setting. Analysis was based on a convenience sample of 202 respondents. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to determine construct validity of the three-factor structure of each scale and measurement invariance procedures were utilised to determine whether the factor structure was equivalent across gender. Convergent and discriminant validity of the scales, and predictive and incremental validity were examined for consistency with theory on gender beliefs/stereotypes and violence in patriarchal society. A single-factor CFA model approach was used to examine common method bias. Results suggest the BEREVIWOS and GESTABE are multidimensional scales with an intercorrelated three-factor structure. The fit of the models and composite reliability were adequate. Scores from the BEREVIWOS and GESTABE appear reliable and valid measures of underlying beliefs and stereotypes associated with violence against women in Nigeria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic could increase violence against children at home. However, collecting empirical data on violence is challenging due to ethical, safety, and data quality concerns. This study estimated the anticipated effect of COVID-19 on violent discipline at home using multivariable predictive regression models. Children aged 1–14 years and household members from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS) conducted in Nigeria, Mongolia, and Suriname before the COVID-19 pandemic were included. A conceptual model of how the COVID-19 pandemic could affect risk factors for violent discipline was developed. Country specific multivariable linear models were used to estimate the association between selected variables from MICS and a violent discipline score which captured the average combination of violent disciplinary methods used in the home. A review of the literature informed the development of quantitative assumptions about how COVID-19 would impact the selected variables under a "high restrictions" pandemic scenario, approximating conditions expected during a period of intense response measures, and a "lower restrictions" scenario with easing of COVID-19 restrictions but with sustained economic impacts. These assumptions were used to estimate changes in violent discipline scores. Under a "high restrictions" scenario there would be a 35%–46% increase in violent discipline scores in Nigeria, Mongolia and Suriname, and under a "lower restrictions" scenario there would be between a 4%–6% increase in violent discipline scores in these countries. Background: Military personnel are one of the high risk groups recognized as perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV). Little is known about IPV experience of partners of naval personnel. This study determined the prevalence and correlates of IPV experience among partners of naval personnel., Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 435 male and female partners of naval personnel selected using the multistage sampling technique from the Navy Barracks in Lagos, Nigeria was conducted. Data were collected using a 40 item interviewer-administered questionnaire between August and September 2017. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis was done to identify the predictors of partners' experience of IPV. Analysis was done at p-value ≤0.05., Results: The mean age of the respondents was 32.7 ± 7.86yrs and 72% were females. The lifetime prevalence of any IPV experience was 40.7% (with 74.4% of this experienced by females, CI: 0.81-1.91). The prevalence of controlling behaviour, psychological, sexual, economic and physical IPV were 31.5%, 16.3% 12.4%, 12.0% and 8.5% respectively. There was a positive association between experience of IPV and respondents' occupational status (p < 0.0001), lifetime experience of physical (p < 0.0001), sexual abuse (<0.0001), and history of childhood abuse (p < 0.0001). After adjustment for confounders, age (AOR = 2.11, CI = 1.07-4.16), occupational status (AOR = 4.56, CI = 2.30-9.02), history of childhood abuse (AOR = 2.10, CI = 1.26-3.49,) and partners' alcohol use (AOR = 3.41, CI = 1.38-8.39) remained significant factors influencing experience of IPV., Conclusion: The prevalence of IPV experience among partners of naval personnel was high. Being unemployed, experience of abuse in childhood and having a partner who consumed alcohol increased partners' vulnerability to IPV. Naval personnel would benefit from marital counseling and training on non-violence conflict resolution strategies.
