Aim: The abundant niche‐centre hypothesis has been used to describe patterns of species abundance relative to position in ecological niche space. Such relationships, however, are inconsistently recovered and may be obscured due to non‐equilibrium distributions, such as those caused novel interactions with exotic species. Here, we explore patterns of fitness for the nine‐spotted lady (Coccinella novemnotata) following the introduction of an exotic competitor, the seven‐spotted lady beetle (C. septempunctata). We examine how niche overlap between species may be causing a range reduction for C. novemnotata through a modified abundant niche‐centre relationship. Location: North America. Methods: We applied a time‐oriented view of the abundant niche‐centre relationship for C. novemnotata, both before and after the introduction of C. septempunctata. We tested for both niche overlap and correlation between C. novemnotata body size (i.e. fitness) and the distance from its niche centroid relative to the invasion status of C. septempunctata. Results: The current niche space currently occupied by C. novemnotata is equivalent to its historic niche but has shifted to avoid overlap with C. septempunctata. A historic abundant niche‐centre relationship with larger individuals closer to the niche centroid was observed for C. novemnotata. However, this pattern changed to have smaller beetles near the niche centroid when the current distribution was considered. Main Conclusions: Fitness patterns displayed by C. novemnotata are effectively described by the abundant niche‐centre hypothesis. However, this relationship was modified with the introduction of C. septempunctata. Coccinella novemnotata is not excluded from previously suitable areas that correspond to niche space nearest to its niche centroid. Abundant niche‐centre relationships may provide strong predictions of species' fitness across a species geographic range; however, these relationships may be obscured by novel pressures resulting in non‐equilibrium states. Novel predator–prey interactions can contribute to the invasion success of non‐native predators. For example, native prey can fail to recognize and avoid non‐native predators due to a lack of co‐evolutionary history and cue dissimilarity with native predators. This might result in a competitive advantage for non‐native predators. Numerous lady beetle species were globally redistributed as biological control agents against aphids, resulting in novel predator–prey interactions. Here, we investigated the strength of avoidance behavior of the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum) toward chemical cues of native lady beetles and non‐native Asian Harmonia axyridis and European Coccinella septempunctata and Hippodamia variegata in North America, hypothesizing that cues of non‐native lady beetles induce weaker avoidance behavior than cues of co‐evolved native lady beetles. Additionally, we compared aphid consumption of lady beetles, examining potential predation advantages of non‐native lady beetles. Finally, we compared cue avoidance behavior between North American and European pea aphid populations and aphid consumption of native and non‐native lady beetles in North America and Europe. In North America, pea aphids avoided chemical cues of all ladybeetle species tested, regardless of their origin. In contrast to pea aphids in North America, European pea aphids did not avoid cues of the non‐native H. axyridis. The non‐native H. axyridis and C. septempunctata were among the largest and most voracious lady beetle species tested, on both continents. Consequently, in North America non‐native lady beetle species might have a competitive advantage on shared food resources due to their relatively large body size, compared to several native American lady beetle species. In Europe, however, non‐native H. axyridis might benefit from missing aphid cue avoidance as well as a large body size. The co‐evolutionary time gap between the European and North American invasion of H. axyridis likely explains the intercontinental differences in cue avoidance behavior and might indicate evolution in aphids toward non‐native predators. Landscape complexity influences soybean aphid suppression by generalist predators in North America, but the role of adjacent habitats as sources of these predators has not been studied directly. We quantified movement of aphidophagous predators between soybean and five adjacent habitats common in Manitoba using bi-directional Malaise traps. To test the contribution of predators from neighboring habitats to soybean aphid suppression, we performed experimental manipulations in adjacent soybean and alfalfa fields and monitored the movement of sevenspotted lady beetles, Coccinella septempunctata, using mark-release-recapture experiments. The identity of adjacent habitats affected the net movement of predators into soybean. The most abundant predators were hover flies (Diptera: Syrphidae), moving from woodlands to soybean. Similar (but non-significant) trends were found for lady beetles, minute pirate bugs, and green and brown lacewings. There was also a net movement of hover flies and green lacewings from soybean to canola. Lady beetles showed higher bidirectional movement in alfalfa and wheat borders than in woodland and canola borders in a high lady beetle abundance year. Soybean aphid populations in predator exclusion cages were 21- to 122- fold higher than populations exposed to predators, both in alfalfa and soybean fields. Aerial predators provide similar levels of aphid suppression as aerial and epigeal predators combined. Mark-release-recapture experiments showed high dispersal of C. septempunctata between soybean and alfalfa, with a net movement towards alfalfa, probably due to the lack of aphids in soybean. These results demonstrate that predator assemblages from both soybeans and alfalfa can suppress soybean aphids. Our findings indicate that the type of adjacent habitat and predator identity affect the directionality of predator movement into soybean. This study suggests that information on predator movement can be used to design the distribution of crops and natural habitats in agricultural landscapes that maximize pest control services. The cereal leaf beetle (CLB), Oulema melanopus (L.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is an invasive pest in North America recently reported in the Canadian Prairies. We performed a series of laboratory assays to identify potential predators and a field study to quantify predation of CLB eggs. In no-choice Petri dish assays, ground beetles (Carabidae), rove beetles (Staphylinidae), and several common lady beetle species (Coccinellidae) were the most consistent predators of eggs and larvae. Nabis spp. (Hemiptera: Nabidae) and wolf spiders (Araneae: Lycosidae) consumed many larvae, but did not consume eggs. Hippodamia spp., Coccinella septempunctata (L.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), and Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger) (Coleoptera: Carabidae) also fed on CLB eggs on potted plants when an alternative food source was available, Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Aphididae). In our field study, we found an average of 24.5% of sentinel eggs disappeared over a 24 h period, likely due to predation. Abstract: Interactions with native species often influence whether exotic species will become invasive. The lady beetles Coccinella septempunctata and Harmonia axyridis are broadly successful invaders, but they have failed to fully establish in some parts of western North America. One possibility is that the locally-abundant, generalist predatory bugs Nabis alternatus and Geocoris bullatus resist invasion by acting as intraguild predators. We investigated the relative likelihoods of (1) the invasive lady beetles falling prey to the native generalist bugs compared to two native lady beetles, Hippodamia convergens and Coccinella transversoguttata, and (2) the relative likelihood of these exotic vs. native lady beetles committing reciprocal intraguild predation and consuming the two native predatory bugs. A series of predation trials demonstrated that C. septempunctata exhibited similar susceptibility to predation by Nabis and Geocoris, and a similar likelihood to commit reciprocal intraguild predation on the two bugs, relative to its native congener C. transversoguttata. In contrast, among all species tested, the exotic species H. axyridis was the least susceptible to intraguild predation by the bugs and was the most likely to consume Nabis and Geocoris. Altogether, these results suggest that native predatory bugs would have similar effects on the native and exotic Coccinella species, conferring no particular harm or advantage to C. septempunctata during its invasion. However, H. axyridis enjoyed advantages over the native bugs by being a rare victim but common perpetrator of intraguild predation; all else being equal, this would tend to favor replacement of native species by H. axyridis. Reproductive potentials were compared for a large invasive lady beetle, sevenspotted lady beetle, Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), and a set of four smaller native North American species that have been displaced from alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., fields in Utah. The invader rapidly attained predominance in these fields during years when aphid populations were high. In a laboratory experiment, females were provided with excess numbers of their principal prey in these fields, pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris). Among the five species, both the number and total volume of eggs (number x mean egg volume) produced per day increased with increasing female size and were greatest for C. septempunctata. Rates of reproduction also increased with increasing female size within species. Similarly sized females of C. septempunctata and transverse lady beetle, Coccinella transversoguttata richardsoni (Brown), laid similar total volumes of eggs per day, but females of the invasive species had more ovarioles and laid larger numbers of individually smaller eggs. In summary, when feeding on abundant prey in a habitat in which it predominates, the invasive C. septempunctata gains reproductive advantage over native, North American lady beetles, from its large body size and its investment in many small eggs. The results support the generalization that high fecundity linked with large body size may often be one important factor that promotes the dominance of introduced species over native competitors in resource-rich environments. Coccinella septempunctata L. and Harmonia axyridzs Pallas are key natural enemies of soybean aphid, Aphi3 gltjcines Matsumura, in North America. Third instars, adult females, and adult males of both C. septempunctata and H. axyridis exhibited a type H functional response for predation toward adult soybean aphids at 26 ± 1°C. In C. septempunctata, the functional response curve of adult males differed from those of third instars and adult females, but there was no difference between third instars and adult females. In H. axyridis, the functional response curves of larvae, adult females, and adult males all differed significantly. Third instars and adult females consumed significantly more soybean aphids than did adult males at prey densities of 150 and 180 aphids per arena for C. septempunctata and at prey densities of 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 aphids per arena for H. axyridis. The theoretical maximum daily predation rate of adult aphids by C. septempunctata was predicted to be 204 per third instar, 277 per adult female, and 166 per adult male, and 244, 156, and 73, respectively, for H. axyridis. Third instars and adult females of both species consumed significantly more aphids than did adult males on soybean plants with the recommended action threshold of 250 soybean aphids per plant. Lady beetles are important predators in nature. Some species, including the two-spotted lady beetle, Adalia bipunctata L., are native to North America, whereas others, such as the seven-spotted lady beetle, Coccinella septempunctata L., have been introduced in North America for pest control on agriculture crops. Microsporidia are obligate pathogens that cause chronic disease, and these pathogens are known to infect several lady beetle species. Lady beetles are cannibalistic and, because many species share a given landscape, there is potential for microsporidia to infect susceptible coccinellids when infected eggs are eaten. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of the microsporidium Nosema adaliae isolated from A. bipunctata on C. septempunctata fitness (larval development and mortality, sex ratio, adult longevity and fecundity). Mortality was higher for C. septempunctata larvae that ate four A. bipunctata eggs (≥96% mortality) than for those that ate only one (<63.8%), suggesting that the mortality observed was influenced by the number of eggs eaten. A. bipunctata eggs contain adaline and adalinine, two species-specific alkaloids that have been shown to be detrimental to C. septempunctata larvae. Development of larvae that consumed one uninfected or one N. adaliae -infected A. bipunctata egg, did not differ significantly (20.5 ± 0.2 d and 21.3 ± 0.4 d, respectively) and, although mortality remained high for these larvae (53.5% and 65.6% mortality, respectively), these values also did not differ significantly (p = 0.05). Over a 60-d period, mean fecundity for C. septempunctata adults that ate one uninfected A. bipunctata egg as first-instar larvae was significantly greater (776.6 ± 122.0 eggs) than those that ate one N. adaliae -infected egg (335.6 ± 86.6 eggs, p = 0.005). Larvae from the former group also lived significantly longer (58.2 ± 1.8 d) than did those from the latter group (38.4 ± 6.4 d, p = 0.010). Sex ratios of adult beetles did not differ significantly. Because A. bipunctata and C. septempunctata share similar habitats, it is reasonable to expect these two coccinellids to encounter one another in nature. Results of this study show that the consumption of only one infected A. bipunctata egg by C. septempunctata larvae can result in high larval mortality and reduced fecundity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
