The article traces the history of oral implants, starting with the undocumented use of blade-vent implants and subperiosteal frames in the mid-1960s. It notes that while the Branemark system of osseointegration was unsuccessful, it has led to improved documentation and general acceptance of implants in the 1970s. Prosthodontist George Zarb led the introduction of implants in North America together with the application of osseointegration techniques. It also suggests that future research will focus on bioactive surfaces and tissue engineering techniques.
