Abstract

The article discusses a study on the utility of detection of trace elements such as Sodium, Manganese and Aluminum as a tool for research in migratory connectivity of different types of shorebirds that travel from North America to South America. It states that the study analyzed the contents of feathers obtained from migratory birds including Red Knots, White-rumped Sandpipers and Collared Plover. Results conclude that trace element detection is not applicable for migratory bird study.

Abstract

This article focuses on the decline in the wintering population of Red Knots in North, South and Central America. This decline has begun more than 20 years ago. The decline was due in large part to the deaths of at least 1,300 birds in Uruguay in April 2007. Experts on the imperiled shorebird also found that a wintering population on the west coast of Florida had dwindled from 10,000 in the 1980s to 2,500 two years ago to only 550 birds this year.
