Managing annual row crops on marginally productive croplands can be environmentally unsustainable and result in variable economic returns. Incorporating perennial bioenergy feedstocks into marginally productive cropland can engender ecosystem services and enhance climate resiliency while also diversifying farm incomes. We use one of the oldest bioenergy-specific field experiments in North America to evaluate economically and environmentally sustainable management practices for growing perennial grasses on marginal cropland. This long-term field trial called 9804 was established in 1998 in eastern Nebraska and compared the productivity and sustainability of corn (Zea mays L.) --both corn grain and corn stover--and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) bioenergy systems under different harvest strategies and nitrogen (N) fertilizer rates. This experiment demonstrated that switchgrass, compared to corn, is a reliable and sustainable bioenergy feedstock. This experiment has been a catalyst for other bioenergy projects which have also expanded our understanding of growing and managing bioenergy feedstocks on marginal cropland. We (1) synthesize research from this long-term experiment and (2) provide perspective concerning both the knowledge gained from this experiment and knowledge gaps and how to fill them as well as the role switchgrass will play in the future of bioenergy. Biomass as a renewable energy source includes energy crops that are not used for food but solely for biomass production with the goal of conversion to various forms of biofuel. Switchgrass, a perennial grass native to North America, has been explored as an energy crop for many years. It is suitable because it does not require much agrotechnical input, is highly resistant to pest infestation and disease development, and can provide very high biomass yields. The aim of this work was to determine the biomass quality of the mentioned plant in relation to the autumn and spring harvest, considering its use in direct combustion processes. Significant differences were found in the percentages of ash, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and water, as well as in the percentages of micro and macro elements, in the harvest dates studied. Compared to the autumn, the moisture content decreased from 33.88% to 10.95% and ash content from 4.59% to 3.1% in the spring harvest, while the carbon content increased from 47.02% to 47.49%, dry matter from 38.91% to 89.22%, and heating value from 18.60 MJ kg−1 to 18.73 MJ kg−1. Background: Adaptations by arthropod pests to host plant defenses of crops determine their impacts on agricultural production. The larval host range of western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is restricted to maize and a few grasses. Resistance of D. v. virgifera to crop rotation practices and multiple insecticides contributes to its status as the most damaging pest of cultivated maize in North America and Europe. The extent to which adaptations by this pest contributes to host plant specialization remains unknown. Results: A 2.42 Gb draft D. v. virgifera genome, Dvir_v2.0, was assembled from short shotgun reads and scaffolded using long-insert mate-pair, transcriptome and linked read data. K-mer analysis predicted a repeat content of ≥ 61.5%. Ortholog assignments for Dvir_2.0 RefSeq models predict a greater number of species-specific gene duplications, including expansions in ATP binding cassette transporter and chemosensory gene families, than in other Coleoptera. A majority of annotated D. v. virgifera cytochrome P450s belong to CYP4, 6, and 9 clades. A total of 5,404 transcripts were differentially-expressed between D. v. virgifera larvae fed maize roots compared to alternative host (Miscanthus), a marginal host (Panicum virgatum), a poor host (Sorghum bicolor) and starvation treatments; Among differentially-expressed transcripts, 1,908 were shared across treatments and the least number were between Miscanthus compared to maize. Differentially-expressed transcripts were enriched for putative spliceosome, proteosome, and intracellular transport functions. General stress pathway functions were unique and enriched among up-regulated transcripts in marginal host, poor host, and starvation responses compared to responses on primary (maize) and alternate hosts. Conclusions: Manual annotation of D. v. virgifera Dvir_2.0 RefSeq models predicted expansion of paralogs with gene families putatively involved in insecticide resistance and chemosensory perception. Our study also suggests that adaptations of D. v. virgifera larvae to feeding on an alternate host plant invoke fewer transcriptional changes compared to marginal or poor hosts. The shared up-regulation of stress response pathways between marginal host and poor host, and starvation treatments may reflect nutrient deprivation. This study provides insight into transcriptomic responses of larval feeding on different host plants and resources for genomic research on this economically significant pest of maize. Polyploidy results from whole-genome duplication and is a unique form of heritable variation with pronounced evolutionary implications. Different ploidy levels, or cytotypes, can exist within a single species, and such systems provide an opportunity to assess how ploidy variation alters phenotypic novelty, adaptability, and fitness, which can, in turn, drive the development of unique ecological niches that promote the coexistence of multiple cytotypes. Switchgrass, Panicum virgatum, is a widespread, perennial C4 grass in North America with multiple naturally occurring cytotypes, primarily tetraploids (4×) and octoploids (8×). Using a combination of genomic, quantitative genetic, landscape, and niche modeling approaches, we detect divergent levels of genetic admixture, evidence of niche differentiation, and differential environmental sensitivity between switchgrass cytotypes. Taken together, these findings support a generalist (8×)-specialist (4×) trade-off. Our results indicate that the 8× represent a unique combination of genetic variation that has allowed the expansion of switchgrass' ecological niche and thus putatively represents a valuable breeding resource. Perennial grass energy crop production is necessary for the successful and sustainable expansion of bioenergy in North America. Numerous environmental advantages are associated with perennial grass cropping systems, including their potential to promote soil carbon accrual. Despite growing research interest in the abiotic and biotic factors driving soil carbon cycling within perennial grass cropping systems, soil fauna remain a critical yet largely unexplored component of these ecosystems. By regulating microbial activity and organic matter decomposition dynamics, soil fauna influence soil carbon stability with potentially significant implications for soil carbon accrual. We begin by reviewing the diverse, predominantly indirect effects of soil fauna on soil carbon dynamics in the context of perennial grass cropping systems. Since the impacts of perennial grass energy crop production on soil fauna will mediate their potential contributions to soil carbon accrual, we then discuss how perennial grass energy crop traits, diversity, and management influence soil fauna community structure and activity. We assert that continued research into the interactions of soil fauna, microbes, and organic matter will be important for advancing our understanding of soil carbon dynamics in perennial grass cropping systems. Furthermore, explicit consideration of soil faunal effects on soil carbon can improve our ability to predict changes in soil carbon following perennial grass cropping system establishment. We conclude by addressing the major knowledge gaps that should be prioritized to better understand and model the complex connections between perennial grass bioenergy systems, soil fauna, and carbon accrual. Perennial bioenergy crops with deep (>1 m) rooting systems, such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), are hypothesized to increase carbon storage in deep soil. Deeply rooted plants may also affect soil hydrology by accessing deep soil water for transpiration, which can affect soil water content and infiltration in deep soil layers, thereby affecting groundwater recharge. Using stable H and O isotope (δ2H and δ18O) and 3H values, we studied the soil water conditions at 20–30 cm intervals to depths of 2.4–3.6 m in paired fields of switchgrass and shallow rooted crops at three sites in the southern Great Plains of North America. We found that soil under switchgrass had consistently higher soil water content than nearby soil under shallow‐rooted annual crops by a margin of 15%–100%. Soil water content and isotopic depth profiles indicated that hydraulic redistribution of deep soil water by switchgrass roots explained these observed soil water differences. To our knowledge, these are the first observations of hydraulic redistribution in deeply rooted grasses, and complement earlier observations of dynamic soil water fluxes under shallow‐rooted grasses. Hydraulic redistribution by switchgrass may be a strategy for drought avoidance, wherein the plant may actively prevent water limitation. This raises the possibility that deeply rooted grasses may be used to passively subsidize soil water to more shallow‐rooted species in inter‐cropping arrangements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), a perennial C4 grass, represents an important species in natural and anthropogenic grasslands of North America. Its resilience to abiotic and biotic stress has made switchgrass a preferred bioenergy crop. However, little is known about the mechanisms of resistance of switchgrass against pathogens and herbivores. Volatile compounds such as terpenes have important activities in plant direct and indirect defense. Here, we show that switchgrass leaves emit blends of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes upon feeding by the generalist insect herbivore Spodoptera frugiperda (fall armyworm) and in a systemic response to the treatment of roots with defense hormones. Belowground application of methyl jasmonate also induced the release of volatile terpenes from roots. To correlate the emission of terpenes with the expression and activity of their corresponding biosynthetic genes, we identified a gene family of 44 monoterpene and sesquiterpene synthases (mono- and sesqui-TPSs) of the type-a, type-b, type-g, and type-e subfamilies, of which 32 TPSs were found to be functionally active in vitro. The TPS genes are distributed over the K and N subgenomes with clusters occurring on several chromosomes. Synteny analysis revealed syntenic networks for approximately 30–40% of the switchgrass TPS genes in the genomes of Panicum hallii , Setaria italica , and Sorghum bicolor , suggesting shared TPS ancestry in the common progenitor of these grass lineages. Eighteen switchgrass TPS genes were substantially induced upon insect and hormone treatment and the enzymatic products of nine of these genes correlated with compounds of the induced volatile blends. In accordance with the emission of volatiles, TPS gene expression was induced systemically in response to belowground treatment, whereas this response was not observed upon aboveground feeding of S. frugiperda. Our results demonstrate complex above and belowground responses of induced volatile terpene metabolism in switchgrass and provide a framework for more detailed investigations of the function of terpenes in stress resistance in this monocot crop. With the current interest in cellulosic biofuel feedstocks, switchgrass ( Panicum virgatum L.) research has increased in North America over the past decades. However, implications of large-scale switchgrass production on local and regional water budgets are largely unknown. We conducted eddy covariance measurements over a large (60 ha) commercial switchgrass field in Southern Ontario, Canada, to determine evapotranspiration and energy fluxes during the sixth (2012) and seventh (2013) year since establishment of switchgrass. Annual total evapotranspiration was slightly smaller in the wet year of 2013 compared to the dry year of 2012 (562 ± 12 and 598 ± 9 mm, respectively; error estimate based on gap filling error). Canopy conductance was larger in the wet year (11.2 ± 1.5 mm s −1 in 2013; average ± standard error) than in the dry year (7.7 ± 0.9 mm s −1 in 2012), which suggests that switchgrass regulated stomatal opening to reduce water loss. Although this regulation reduced atmospheric CO 2 fixation, it did not result in yield reduction. Water use efficiency of harvested dry matter was larger in 2012 compared to 2013 (1.82 ± 0.12 and 1.40 ± 0.11 g DM (kg H 2 O) −1 , respectively; error estimates based on Gaussian error propagation). Water use efficiency based on gross ecosystem production (EWUE) in 2013 was 14.0 ± 0.6 g CO 2 (kg H 2 O) −1 , compared to 13.3 ± 0.3 g CO 2 (kg H 2 O) −1 in 2012 (error estimates based on Gaussian error propagation). Daily, monthly, and seasonal EWUE showed a trend to lower values in the dry year of 2012 compared to 2013. These results indicate that the switchgrass crop was able to reduce the water cost of aboveground biomass in the dry year by relocating carbon from belowground structures, but it fixed more atmospheric carbon per unit water evapotranspired in the wet year. Our findings show that mature switchgrass has the potential to withstand the impact of moderate drought or dry conditions. Switchgrass (SG) is one of the most promising next generation biofuel crops in North America. Inoculation with bacterial endophytes has improved growth of several plant species. Our study demonstrated that Burkholderia phytofirmans strain PsJN, a well-studied plant growth promoting rhizo-bacterium (PGPR) significantly increased both aboveground and belowground biomass (DW) and promoted elongation of root, stem and leaf within 17 days following inoculation. Furthermore, the enhanced root growth in PsJN inoculated plants lagged behind the shoot response, resulting in greater allocation to aboveground growth ( p = 0.0041). Lower specific root length (SRL, p = 0.0158) and higher specific leaf weight (SLW, p = 0.0029) were also observed in PsJN inoculated seedlings, indicating changes in development. Photosynthetic rates (Ps) were also significantly higher in PsJN inoculated seedlings after 17 days (54%, p = 0.0016), and this occurred initially without increases in stomatal conductance resulting in significantly greater water use efficiency (WUE, 37.7%, p = 0.0467) and lower non-stomatal limitation (LNS, 29.6%, p = 0.0222). Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a polyploid, outcrossing grass species native to North America and has recently been recognized as a potential biofuel feedstock crop. Significant phenotypic variation including ploidy is present across the two primary ecotypes of switchgrass, referred to as upland and lowland switchgrass. The tetraploid switchgrass genome is approximately 1400 Mbp, split between two subgenomes, with significant repetitive sequence content limiting the efficiency of re-sequencing approaches for determining genome diversity. To characterize genetic diversity in upland and lowland switchgrass as a first step in linking genotype to phenotype, we designed an exome capture probe set based on transcript assemblies that represent approximately 50 Mb of annotated switchgrass exome sequences. We then evaluated and optimized the probe set using solid phase comparative genome hybridization and liquid phase exome capture followed by next-generation sequencing. Using the optimized probe set, we assessed variation in the exomes of eight switchgrass genotypes representing tetraploid lowland and octoploid upland cultivars to benchmark our exome capture probe set design. We identified ample variation in the switchgrass genome including 1 395 501 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), 8173 putative copy number variants and 3336 presence/absence variants. While the majority of the SNPs (84%) detected was bi-allelic, a substantial number was tri-allelic with limited occurrence of tetra-allelic polymorphisms consistent with the heterozygous and polyploid nature of the switchgrass genome. Collectively, these data demonstrate the efficacy of exome capture for discovery of genome variation in a polyploid species with a large, repetitive and heterozygous genome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a candidate for cellulosic bioenergy feedstock development in many parts of North America. Because production costs are generally considered too high for economic and sustainable production of switchgrass biomass, breeding for increased biomass yield is a viable and desirable research objective. The objective of this study was to estimate heterosis and reciprocal-cross effects in three types of switchgrass crosses: upland × upland (U×U), lowland × lowland (L×L), and upland × lowland (L×U) hybrids. A total of 62 hybrids and two parental populations were evaluated for 2 yr at two Wisconsin locations. Mid-parent heterosis for biomass yield was observed in only four L×L hybrids and no L×U hybrids, suggesting that it is not a universal phenomenon between upland and lowland ecotypes. Reciprocal effects were more important than heterosis effects, as most hybrids were similar in performance to their maternal parent population. Flowering time was a strong driver of biomass yield, accounting for 67% of the variation among hybrids in biomass yield and increasing biomass yield by 0.47 Mg ha-1 for each day delay in flowering time. Determining the patterns and mechanisms of natural selection in the wild is of fundamental importance to understanding the differentiation of populations and the evolution of new species. However, it is often unknown the extent to which adaptive genetic variation is distributed among ecotypes between distinct habitats versus along large-scale geographic environmental gradients, such as those that track latitude. Classic studies of selection in the wild in switchgrass, Panicum virgatum, tested for adaptation at both of these levels of natural variation. Here we review what these field experiments and modern agronomic field trials have taught us about natural variation and selection at both the ecotype and environmental gradient levels in P. virgatum. With recent genome sequencing efforts in P. virgatum, it is poised to become an excellent system for understanding the adaptation of grassland species across the eastern half of North America. The identification of genetic loci involved in different types of adaptations will help to understand the evolutionary mechanisms of diversification within P. virgatum and provide useful information for the breeding of highyielding cultivars for different ecoregions. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a North American grass that is being improved through conventional breeding and genetic engineering to create a biofuel feedstock. However, the introduction of novel traits has created concerns about pollen-mediated gene flow and negative environmental impacts. The objective of this study was to model switchgrass pollen dispersal using a Lagrangian approach informed by data on pollen longevity and size. With outdoor exposure, the viability of pollen from three cultivars declined over 60 min, but rare events showed pollen longevity of up to 100 min. To model pollen dispersal, wind fields were measured in two locations and on two dates to create case studies representing light wind conditions with buoyant turbulence or stronger winds with pressure-driven, nonturbulent conditions. In the first case study, switchgrass pollen entrained in light wind conditions with buoyancy-driven turbulence moved up to approximately 3.5 km from the source with a maximum flight time of 6000 s. In the second case study, pollen released in stronger winds with pressure-driven conditions moved up to approximately 6.5 km with a maximum flight time of approximately 1300 s. In both cases, the majority of pollen grains were deposited closer to the source. These case studies provide information helpful for predicting pollen-mediated transgene flow, isolating field trials, creating containment and coexistence strategies, and conserving valued switchgrass populations in coastal areas and prairies. Increased production of bioenergy crops in North America is projected to exacerbate already heavy demands upon existing agricultural landscapes with potential to impact biodiversity negatively. Grassland specialist birds are an imperilled avifauna for which perennial-based, next-generation agroenergy feedstocks may provide suitable habitat. We take a multi-scaled spatial approach to evaluate the ability of two candidate second-generation agroenergy feedstocks (switchgrass, Panicum virgatum, and mixed grass-forb plantings) to act as spring migratory stopover habitat for birds. In total, we detected 35 bird species in mixed grass-forb plantings and switchgrass plantings, including grassland specialists and species of state and national conservation concern (e.g., Henslow's Sparrow, Ammodramus henslowii). Some evidence indicated that patches with higher arthropod food availability attracted a greater diversity of migrant bird species, but species richness, total bird abundance, and the abundance of grassland specialist species were similar in fields planted with either feedstock. Species richness per unit area (species density) was relatively higher in switchgrass fields. The percent land cover of forest in landscapes surrounding study fields was negatively associated with bird species richness and species density. Habitat patch size and within-patch vegetation structure were unimportant in predicting the diversity or abundance of spring en route bird assemblages. Our results demonstrate that both switchgrass and mixed grass-forb plantings can attract diverse assemblages of migrant birds. As such, industrialized production of these feedstocks as agroenergy crops has the potential to provide a source of en route habitat for birds, particularly where fields are located in relatively unforested landscapes. Because industrialization of cellulosic biomass production will favor as yet unknown harvest and management regimes, predicting the ultimate value of perennial-based biomass plantings for spring migrants remains difficult. Federal mandates to increase biofuel production in North America will require large new tracts of land with potential to negatively impact biodiversity, yet empirical information to guide implementation is limited. Because the temperate grassland biome will be a production hotspot for many candidate feedstocks, production is likely to impact grassland birds, a group of major conservation concern. We employed a multiscaled approach to investigate the relative importance of arthropod food availability, microhabitat structure, patch size and landscape-scale habitat structure and composition as factors shaping avian richness and abundance in fields of one contemporary (corn) and two candidate cellulosic biomass feedstocks (switchgrass and mixed-grass prairie) not currently managed as crops. Bird species richness and species density increased with patch size in prairie and switchgrass, but not in corn, and was lower in landscapes with higher forest cover. Perennial plantings supported greater diversity and biomass of arthropods, an important food for land birds, but neither metric was important in explaining variation in the avian community. Avian richness was higher in perennial plantings with greater forb content and a more diverse vegetation structure. Maximum bird species richness was commonly found in fields of intermediate vegetation density and grassland specialists were more likely to occur in prairies. Our results suggest that, in contrast to corn, perennial biomass feedstocks have potential to provide benefits to grassland bird populations if they are cultivated in large patches within relatively unforested landscapes. Ultimately, genetic improvement of feedstock genets and crop management techniques that attempt to maximize biomass production and simplify crop vegetation structure will be likely to reduce the value of perennial biomass plantings to grassland bird populations. The article presents a study which establishes the first bacterial artificial chromosomes (BAC) library for switchgrass, a grass native to North America which is being developed into a biomass fuel crop. The switchgrass BAC library was constructed by partial digestion of nuclear DNA and comparative analysis of two genomic regions with orthologs of the rice OsBRI1 was conducted. The switchgrass BAC library and comparative analysis presents a glimpse into the structure of switchgrass genome.

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is widely adapted throughout North America, but its productivity tends to decline with increasing latitude. Little is known about its genetic potential to photosynthetically acclimate to suboptimal growth temperature, although such potential could be useful to enhance productivity. To examine this, a growth chamber study was conducted with two lowland (Alamo and Kanlow) and two upland (Cave in Rock and Sunburst) ecotypes grown under day/night air temperatures of 32/24°C and later switched to 22/14°C. Photosynthesis, growth, and carbohydrates were analyzed before and after temperature switching. Photosynthesis was greater in lowland than upland cultivars at 32°C air temperature. After switching to 22/14°C and allowing plants to adjust, photosynthesis declined with little difference among cultivars. Moreover, photosynthetic capacity among cultivars slightly decreased or remained similar compared to before the temperature switch. However, after switching to 22/14°C, Alamo gained the most dry matter (3.9 g plant-1), which was 69, 82, and 152% greater than that of Sunburst, Kanlow, and Cave in Rock, respectively. Total nonstructural carbohydrates increased at 22/14°C, but Alamo showed the least change and no difference in leaf sucrose/starch ratio following the switch. Maintenance of carbon metabolism favoring growth, but not photosynthetic acclimation, may be a key to enhancing switchgrass productivity under suboptimal growth temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Dedicated biofuel crops, while providing economic and other benefits, may adversely impact biodiversity directly via land use conversion, or indirectly via creation of novel invasive species. To mitigate negative impacts bioclimatic envelope models (BEM) can be used to estimate the potential distribution and suitable habitat based on the climate and distribution in the native range. We used CLIMEX to evaluate the regions of North America suitable for agronomic production, as well as regions potentially susceptible to an invasion of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) under both current and future climate scenarios. Model results show that >8.7 millionkm2 of North America has suitable to very favorable habitat, most of which occurs east of the Rocky Mountains. The non-native range of western North America is largely unsuitable to switchgrass as a crop or potential weed unless irrigation or permanent water is available. Under both the CGCM2 and HadCM3 climate models and A2 and B2 emissions scenarios, an overall increase in suitable habitat is predicted over the coming century, although the western US remains unsuitable. Our results suggest that much of North America is suitable for switchgrass cultivation, although this is likely to shift north in the coming century. Our results also agree with field collections of switchgrass outside its native range, which indicate that switchgrass is unlikely to establish unless it has access to water throughout the year (e.g., along a stream). Abstract: In recent years perennial grasses such as the native tallgrass prairie plant Panicum virgatum (switchgrass) have taken on a new role in the North American landscape as a plant-based source of renewable energy. Because switchgrass is a native plant, it has been suggested that disease problems will be minimal, but little research in this area has been conducted. Recently, outbreaks of switchgrass anthracnose disease have been reported from the northeastern United States. Incidences of switchgrass anthracnose are known in North America since 1886 through herbarium specimens and disease reports, but the causal agent of this disease has never been experimentally determined or taxonomically evaluated. In the present work, we evaluate the causal agent of switchgrass anthracnose, a new species we describe as Colletotrichum navitas (navitas =Latin for energy). Multilocus molecular phylogenetics and morphological characters show C. navitas is a novel species in the falcate-spored graminicolous group of the genus Colletotrichum; it is most closely related to the corn anthracnose pathogen Colletotrichum graminicola. We present a formal description and illustrations for C. navitas and provide experimental confirmation that this organism is responsible for switchgrass anthracnose disease. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), a native of eastern and central North America, is a leading candidate as a dedicated biofuel feedstock in the US due to its broad adaptability, rapid growth rate, and ability to grow in low production soils. To begin to characterize the important agronomic and ecological traits related to environmental tolerance of switchgrass, we evaluated fitness under stressful growing conditions. We assessed the germination, establishment, performance, and reproductive potential of four common accessions, both upland and lowland ecotypes, at various levels of soil moisture availability (moisture deficit to flooded) in the greenhouse. Seeds emerged and established (55–90% survival) under all soil moisture conditions (−0.3MPa to flooded). Transplants of lowland ecotypes performed as well in flooded conditions as in field capacity controls, though flooding reduced performance of upland ecotypes. Drought treatments (−4.0 and −11.0MPa) reduced tiller length and number, leaf area, and biomass production by up to 80%. However, once established, all plants survived at −4.0MPa and had the same proportion of tillers in flower as at field capacity. The ability of switchgrass to germinate, establish, and flower in low moisture and flooded conditions, particularly lowland ecotypes, may increase the range of environments suitable for biofuel cultivation, and can serve as a baseline for further ecological studies and genetic improvement. This study analyzes the effects of N fertilizer application rates on profitability of growing switchgrass and using the feedstock in a pyrolysis biorefinery facility to create a source of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply in Tennessee. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a perennial bunchgrass native to North America with traits suitable for biofuel and co-product production. Previous chemical analysis has shown that ash content in switchgrass is related to the amount of nitrogen applied to the field, while at the biorefinery level, the percentage ash content reduces the biorefinery fuel output. To obtain optimal nitrogen (N) application rates for the switchgrass producers and the biorefinery, a two-part analysis is employed. First, a partial budgeting profitability analysis is conducted for this cropping enterprise at the farm-gate level without considering downstream implications of biomass quality, i.e., ash content. Second, the effects of higher ash content as a percentage of the feedstock on biorefinery output are analyzed. Results show farm-gate profit is maximized when N fertilizer is applied at 111 kg/ha, while as a result of increased production levels and decreased percentage ash content, biorefinery profit is maximized when N is applied at 157 kg/ha. While biofuels have been touted as a benefit for growers—with the ability to be planted on marginal lands, for improved wildlife habitat, to sustain soils, and to reduce runoff—there remains to be a general summary of how beneficial they really are. This paper aims to review the environmental effects, feasibility, and economic aspects of using native perennial grasses in North America as biofuels as opposed to traditional annual crops. The Scopus database was used to search for manuscripts relating to each topic. In some instances, very few results appeared, so a second database, Digitop, was also used. Native perennial grasses have been found to sequester carbon and cultivating them can create a carbon sink in the soil. Overall, wildlife benefit more by having native perennial grass for biofuels planted than annual maize and having fewer harvests a season is better for wildlife over the entire year. Economically, growing native perennial grasses can be advantageous especially on marginal land, where it has a comparatively high yield. Although the second-generation biofuel supply chain is susceptible to changing market prices, it can be made more resilient and has advantages, for example resistance against the impacts of drought. Although there are many cultivars to choose from, factors like climate, soil, and genetics can provide pertinent information to match each specimen's ideal growing conditions to the right location. Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is one of the leading candidates for sustainable lignocellulosic biofuel production in North America. Most current management recommendations for switchgrass include applications of synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizers to increase production, particularly when grown on marginal lands. However, this management can be costly to growers and have negative impacts on ecosystem functioning. Also, N-fertilization does not always result in higher yield in switchgrass and may have unintended effects on plant biomass quality, including cell wall composition, that can affect the efficiency of fermentation processes for biofuel production. Drought stress may reduce biomass responses to N-fertilization, further reducing the value of fertilizer application. To examine whether N-fertilization and reduced precipitation affected switchgrass productivity and cell wall composition, we conducted a two-year field experiment in mature stands of two switchgrass cultivars grown for bioenergy at the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station Long Term Ecological Research Site in Michigan, USA. Nitrogen was added at a rate of 56 kg N ha−1 (urea and ammonium nitrate), and precipitation was reduced using rainout shelters. Overall, we did not observe any effect of N-fertilization on biomass production. However, under ambient rainfall conditions, N-fertilization altered switchgrass biomass quality by reducing hemicellulose. Reduced precipitation minimized the effects of N-fertilization on switchgrass cell wall composition. Switchgrass is a relatively drought-tolerant species, and our results indicate that this crop will be a viable bioenergy feedstock even in a changing climate. However, in this study, N-fertilization had no effect on biomass quality or quantity under drought conditions. • Long-term N fertilization had no effect on biomass in mature switchgrass stands. • Fertilizer decreased hemicellulose and S:G lignin ratios in ambient precipitation conditions. • Drought did not affect biomass, but reduced fertilizer effects on cell wall composition. • N fertilizer offered no obvious benefits for switchgrass biomass quality or quantity. Highly contaminated exposed legacy gold mine tailings from the late 1800s are present in many locations throughout North America and other parts of the world that experienced gold rushes at that time. Those tailing fields can pose risks to human health and the environment. Revegetation of tailing fields can reduce dust generation and other risks associated with these sites. The objective of this study was to investigate if native rapid-growing plants could be successfully germinated in mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) contaminated legacy mine tailings, both untreated and treated with a low dose of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) to promote growth and decrease bioaccumulation of contaminants. After screening many candidates, four wide-spread North American native plant species were selected, Juncus tenuis, Anaphalis margaritacea, Symphotrichum novi-belgii, and Panicum virgatum for their tolerance, presence near legacy gold mine sites, and ability to germinate rapidly in harsh conditions. Three of these species germinated and grew well in untreated tailings except for S. novi-belgii. The selenite treatment increased biomass, emergence, shoot height, and root length in J. tenuis; emergence in A. margaritacea; and root lengths in P. virgatum. This treatment also decreased shoot [Hg] and [As] in P. virgatum by 36% and 40%. Biofuels derived from lignocellulosic materials is one of the options in addressing issues on climate change and energy independence. One of the most promising bioenergy crops is switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), particularly in North America. Future advancement in large-scale conversion of lignocellulosic feedstocks and relatively more competitive price for biomass and other economic advantages could lead to landowners opting to venture on switchgrass monoculture (SWITCH) in lieu of loblolly pine monoculture (PINE). Therefore, we investigated the conversion of previously managed loblolly pine stand into SWITCH in eastern North Carolina, U.S.A. on soil N availability. Treatments included PINE, SWTICH, and mature loblolly pine stand (REF). Each treatment was replicated three times on 0.8 ha plots drained by open ditches dug 1.0-1.2 m deep and spaced at 100 m. Rates of net N mineralization (N m ) and nitrification (N n ) at the top 20 cm were measured using sequential in-situ techniques in 2011 and 2012 (the 3rd and 4th years of establishment, respectively) along with a one-time laboratory incubation. On average, PINE, SWITCH, and REF can have field net N m rates up to 0.40, 0.34 and 0.44 mg N·kg soil -1 ·d -1 , respectively, and net N n rates up to 0.14, 0.08 and 0.10 mg N·kg soil -1 ·d -1 , respectively. Annually, net N m rates ranged from 136.98 to 167.21, 62.00 to 142.61, and 63.57 to 127.95 kg N·ha -1 , and net N n rates were 56.31-62.98, 16.45-30.45, 31.99-32.94 kg N·ha -1 in PINE, SWITCH, and REF, respectively. Treatment effect was not significant on field N m rate (p = 0.091). However, SWITCH significantly reduced nitrate-N production (p < 0.01). Overall, results indicated that establishment of SWITCH on poorly drained lands previously under PINE is less likely to significantly impact total soil N availability and potentially has minimum N leaching losses since soil mineral N under this system will be dominated by ammonium-N., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V.
