A study conducted by RIS News/IHL Consulting Group showed that there remains a relatively low penetration rate of PC-based point-of-sale (POS) systems in North America, with only 40 percent of the 2.5 million total cash points currently employing them. Survey respondents indicated that POS terminals are a primary purchase item in 2005-2006. The window is closing, however, as the research indicates that by late 2007, the POS market in North America will soften considerably.
