Background: Many foot pathologies have been associated with foot type. However, the association of first ray hypermobility remains enigmatic. The purpose of this study was to investigate first ray hypermobility among participants with planus and rectus foot types and its influence on static measures of foot structure. Methods: Twenty asymptomatic participants with planus (n = 23 feet) and rectus (n = 17 feet) foot types were enrolled. Several parameters of static foot structure (arch height index, arch height flexibility, first metatarsophalangeal joint flexibility, and first ray mobility) were measured. Participants were further stratified into groups with nonhypermobile (n = 26 feet) and hypermobile (n = 14 feet) first rays. First ray mobility ≥8 mm was used to define "first ray hypermobility". Generalized estimating equations, best-fit regression lines, and stepwise linear regression were used to identify significant differences and predictors between the study variables Results: Overall, 86% of subjects categorized with first ray hypermobility exhibited a planus foot type. Arch height flexibility, weightbearing first ray mobility, and first metatarsophalangeal joint flexibility showed no significant betweengroup differences. However, weightbearing ray mobility and first metatarsophalangeal joint laxity were associated with partial weightbearing first ray mobility, accounting for 38% of the model variance. Conclusion: The planus foot type was found to be associated with first ray hypermobility. Furthermore, weightbearing first ray mobility and first metatarsophalangeal joint laxity were predictive of partial weightbearing first ray mobility, demonstrating an interaction between the translation and rotational mechanics of the first ray. Background: Loss of muscle mass occurs with aging and in lower limbs it may be accelerated by foot problems. In this cross-sectional analysis, we evaluated the relationship of leg muscle mass to foot symptoms (presence or absence of pain, aching, or stiffness), structure while standing (high arch or low arch), and function while walking (pronated or supinated) in a community-based study of Caucasian and African American men and women who were 50-95 years old.Methods: In the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project, leg muscle mass was measured with whole body dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, and plantar foot pressure data, using predetermined values, were used to classify foot structure and function. Sex-specific crude and adjusted (age, body mass index, and race) linear regression models examined associations of leg muscle mass index (Leg muscle mass [kg]/Height [m](2)) with foot symptoms, structure, and function.Results: Complete data were available for 1,037 participants (mean age 68 years, mean body mass index 31 kg/m(2), 68% women, 29% African American). In women, pronated foot function was associated with lower leg muscle mass in crude (p = .02), but not adjusted (p = .22), models. A low arch was associated with a higher leg muscle mass in adjusted models for both men and women (p < .01).Conclusions: Leg muscle mass was associated with foot structure in our biracial sample, whereas relations between leg muscle mass and foot function were attenuated by age, body mass index, and race. Future longitudinal analyses are needed to explain the temporal relationship between these conditions and how they relate to other aspects of impairment and physical function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Few studies have explored foot osteoarthritis (OA) in the general population. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of foot OA and identify associated factors in a cross-sectional analysis of a large community-based cohort., Methods: Data were from the 2013-2015 study visit of the Johnston County OA Project. Radiographic OA of the foot was defined using the La Trobe radiographic atlas (≥2 osteophytes or joint space narrowing in at least 1 of 5 joints). Symptomatic OA of the foot was defined as foot radiographic OA with pain, aching, or stiffness in the same foot. At the foot-level, separate logistic regression models with generalized estimating equations to account for intraperson correlations were performed to examine associations of foot radiographic OA or symptomatic OA with age, body mass index (BMI), sex, race, educational attainment, and previous foot injury., Results: Of 864 participants with available data (mean age 71 years, mean BMI 30 kg/m 2 , 68% women, 33% African American, 13% <12 years of schooling), 22% had foot radiographic OA, 20% had foot symptoms, and 5% had foot symptomatic OA. Radiographic, but not symptomatic, foot OA was more common in African American than White participants. Participants with obesity, compared to normal weight, had >2 times the odds of radiographic OA and >5 times the odds of symptomatic OA in adjusted models., Conclusion: Foot radiographic OA and foot symptoms were common in the sample, but both conditions simultaneously (i.e., symptomatic OA) occurred infrequently. Background: The occurrence of musculoskeletal foot disorders differs by race and obesity, and these disorders may be related to pronated (low arch) or supinated (high arch) foot structure. This cross-sectional analysis examined relationships of foot disorders and foot function by race and obesity in a community-based observational study of adults 50+ years old with and without osteoarthritis., Methods: Members of a prospective cohort study in North Carolina were included in this analysis (N = 1466, 67.2% women, 29.5% African American, mean age 68.5 years). Foot disorders were identified with a validated assessment tool, and each foot was categorized as overpronated, oversupinated, and referent using the center of pressure excursion index from foot pressure scans during normal-paced walking. Logistic regression models estimated associations between foot function and each foot disorder with age, body mass index (BMI), gender, and race as covariates., Results: Compared to referent, an overpronated foot was associated with hallux valgus (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.36, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.13-1.65) and overlapping toes (aOR 1.36, 95% CI 1.12-1.64), especially in the obese. An oversupinated foot was inversely associated with hallux valgus (aOR 0.85, 95% CI 0.74-0.97). An oversupinated foot was less likely to be associated with bunionettes among the obese and was more likely to be associated with plantar fasciitis in Caucasians., Conclusion: Foot function was related to hallux valgus and overlapping toes, especially among the obese.
