The article presents a study on subglacial cast and bed contact forces at the Engabreen outlet glacier of the Svartisen ice cap in Norway. It mentions that normal forces as well as proportional shear forces are exerted on glacial beds by debris particles from the basal ice of temperate glaciers. The study involved an apparatus that was designed for gauging the drag forces supplied by moving temperate ice on a sphere that has been isolated and resting on the bed. Results suggested that the contact forces between spherical particles and a bed are nearly twice the value of drag forces imposed by Newtonian ice on an isolated particle.
