DMF teeth and surfaces were recorded in a random sample of 35-yr-old Oslo citizens (born 1949). The index values were related to selected independent variables: sex, years at school, oral hygiene status (OHI-S), periodontal conditions (PI), use of interdental cleaning devices and dental visiting habits. Data from the present investigation were analysed together with data from a similar study on 35- yr-olds in 1973 in order to detect possible changes over time. The mean DMFS-score in the present investigation was 85, indicating a high caries experience, mainly due to a high F-component. A statistically significant increase in the number of decayed surfaces was demonstrated concomitant with an increase in PI- and OHI-S scores. There were more carious surfaces among irregular dental visitors than among the regular visitors. No statistically significant differences in DMF-scores from 1973 to 1984 were detected, but there was a statistically significant reduction in the prevalence of untreated caries during this period. Furthermore, an increase in the number of filled surfaces from 1973 to 1984 and a reduction in the number of missing surfaces were registered. This is the lint in a series of reports on a longitudinal investigation of the initiation and progress of periodontal disease in man, One group was established in Norway in 1969 and consisted of 565 male students and teachers between 17 and 30-- years. A second group of comparable age was established in Sri Lanka in 1970 and consisted of 480 tea laborers, Both groups were scored for various disease parameters at start and at intervals during the subsequent seven years. This paper describes the design of the investigation and the periodontal state of the two groups at baseline, The results show that the Norwegian group had good to excellent oral hygiene and mild gingivitis. Supra- and subgingival calcutus were inconspicuous and untreated gingival caries rare, Deficient margins of fillings and other restorations were commonplace. Slight loss of attachment Was apparent in the Youngest group and increased slowly with age, The mean loss of attachment in the 30 year old was less than one millimeter. The prevalence of plaque and gingivitis in 154 children 11-13 years of age was assessed at intervals of 2 and 6 months after an initial examination. The children were divided into four groups, each receiving weekly mouth rinses with fluoride or a placebo solution. Two of the groups carried out supervised toothbrushing immediately before the rinses. Judged front 48 P1 I and G I scores in each child, the baseline data indicated no sex differences, but slight differences in moderate gingivitis, i.e. score 2, between the groups. Paired comparisons of the score 2 frequencies during the experiment indicated no effect on the incidence of gingivitis caused by the fluoride treatments or the supervised toothbrushing. Thus, the weekly fluoride rinses commonly used in the school dental service do not appear to have a detrimental effect on the gingival of children.
