Alpine ecosystems are generally nitrogen (N) limited with low rates of N mineralization. Herbivory may affect N cycling and N losses and thus long-term productivity of ecosystems. Using a controlled grazing experiment in a low-alpine region at Hol, southern Norway, with three density levels of sheep, we determined effects of grazing on in situ availability of inorganic N, potential N mineralization, and mobility of dissolved inorganic N (DIN) and dissolved organic N (DON) in soil water of O-horizons in grazing-preferred grassland habitats. In addition, we studied the within-season and spatial variation of these processes. The low alpine grasslands at Hol were characterized by small, rates of N mineralization and relatively large plant demands for N. Significantly greater rates of potential N mineralization were found at sites with high sheep density compared to those with low density or no grazing. Effects of grazing on bioavailable N (as determined by buried PRS™ exchange resins) were greater at low as compared to high altitudes. At low altitudes, low sheep density reduced amounts of bioavailable N. Nitrogen concentration of plants as a proxy of N availability in soils revealed, however, no significant effects of grazing. There was a strong seasonal effect on inorganic N and DIN:DON ratios of the soil water, with decreasing values in the course of the growing season, probably due to increasing nutrient demand of plants and/or microbes. We conclude that grazing may significantly stimulate N-cycling, but not sufficiently to release the system from its strong N deficiency, as we found no evidence for short-term increased risk in N loss via soil water due to herbivore activity. Nitrogen removal through grazing is small compared to the total soil N pool and at high sheep density is about half of the N deposition. Many rangelands around the world are degraded by severe overgrazing with resulting loss of nutrients and reduced productivity. However, grazing may also increase nutrient cycling and enhance ecosystem productivity. The aim of this study was to determine effects of grazing on availability of nitrogen (N), sources of N utilized by plants and cycling and distribution of N at a low-alpine site, Southern Norway. The study was part of a sheep grazing experiment with three density levels of sheep (no sheep, 25 km and 80 km) since 2001. The N-content of plants was determined in June 2008, August 2008 and August 2009. Indirect effects of herbivory on sources of N and N-cycling were assessed by δN natural abundance and the system's distribution of added NH-N. We found little evidence for grazing induced effects on availability, sources or cycling of N based on N content of plants and δN natural abundance. The organic soil horizon was the largest sink for the added NH-N. Proportional tracer recoveries and tracer enrichments indicate a somewhat greater N cycling at grazed than at non-grazed sites. We conclude that the experimental levels of grazing have limited impact on distribution and cycling of N and thus represent sustainable ecosystem management in terms of N dynamics in the long-term. Abstract: Dissolved aluminium (Al) in soils, mobilized by acid deposition, is considered a threat to forest health through hampering root growth and nutrient uptake. Since the end of the 1980s dissolved Al in forest soil water plays a key role in the assessment of critical loads of acid deposition. So far, most evidence for toxicity of dissolved Al in forest soil water is based on nutrient solution studies and pot experiments. Here, we present results from one of the few in situ ecosystem-scale forest manipulation experiments to study the effect of Al on mature forest trees. A plotwise addition of dilute AlCl3 was conducted during seven years in an even-aged spruce forest (Picea abies) in an area in Norway with low acid deposition. Soil solution concentrations of Al were increased to potentially toxic levels (up to 500μmolL−1) and base cation (Ca+Mg+K) to inorganic Al ratios in the soil solution in the root zone were mostly below 1 in the Al-addition treatments. In the control treatment (only water addition) Al concentrations did not exceed 15μmolL−1 and base cation to inorganic Al ratios were above 1. The toxic effects of Al on fine root growth and plant growth found in hydroponic studies and pot trials are not confirmed by this field manipulation. However, magnesium (Mg) contents in needles decreased significantly and persistently in plots with elevated Al concentrations, whereas the needle Ca content did not respond. The depletion of the Mg content in needles is suggested to be due to antagonistic effects of high Al concentrations at the root surface, consistent with observed reductions in Mg to Al ratio of inner bark. This study clearly supports a role for Al in critical load functions for forests as dissolved Al causes a decrease in uptake of Mg. However, other signs of reduced forest vitality were not observed. We investigated concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in throughfall and soil solutions at 5, 15 and 40-cm depth in 16 Norway spruce and two Scots pine plots throughout Norway between 1996 and 2006. Average DOC concentrations ranged from 2.3 to 23.1 mg/l and from 1.1 to 53.5 mg/l in throughfall water and soil solutions, respectively. Concentrations of DOC in throughfall and soil waters varied seasonally at most plots with peaks in the growing season. By contrast to recently reported positive long-term trends in DOC concentrations in surface waters between 1986 and 2003, soil water data from 1996 to 2006 showed largely negative trends in DOC concentrations and no significant trends in throughfall. However, regression analysis for individual sites, particularly at 5- and 15-cm soil depths, showed that DOC concentrations in soil water were significantly and negatively related to non-marine sulphate (SO4) and chloride (Cl−). The lack of a long-term increase in DOC in soil water in the period May 1996–December 2006 may be due to the relatively small changes in the deposition of SO4 and Cl− in this period. Projected increases in winter temperature due to future climate change may cause decreased snow accumulation at lower and intermediate altitudes in northern temperate regions. The resulting changes in soil temperature and water regime may affect the leaching of total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic nitrogen (TON). We manipulated the snow cover of small headwater catchments in a montane heathland area of southern Norway to quantify its effect on concentrations and fluxes of TOC and TON in runoff. Manipulations included snow removal, to promote soil frost, and insulation, to prevent soil frost. Snow removal resulted in increased TOC and TON concentrations, but decreased fluxes. Insulation caused a slight decrease in concentrations and fluxes of TOC. Our experiments show that a change in snow depth, and thus soil temperature, is not likely to have serious effects on TOC and TON leaching in the montane heatland area studied. Projected changes in climate in Southern Norway include increases in summer and autumn precipitation. This may affect leaching of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from soils. Effects of experimentally added extra precipitation (10 mm week-1)during the growing season of 3 years (2004-2006) to small headwater catchments at Storgama (59°0′N, 550-600 m a.s.I.) on leaching of total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic nitrogen (TON) were assessed. Extra precipitation did not have a significant effect on average TOC and TON concentrations in runoff. Thus, fluxes of TOC and TON increased nearly proportionally with water fluxes. This suggests that a store of adsorbed and potentially mobile TOC and TON in catchment soils buffers the concentration of DOM in runoff. The size and dynamics of the pool of TOC and TON depends on the balance between production and leaching rates. Infrequent short droughts had only small effects on TOC and TON fluxes in runoff from the reference catchments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Projected climate change might increase the deposition of nitrogen by about 10% to seminatural ecosystems in southern Norway. At Storgama, increased precipitation in the growing season increased the fluxes of total organic carbon (TOC) and total organic nitrogen (TON) in proportion to the water flux. In winter, soil temperatures near O°C, common under a snowpack, induced higher runoff of inorganic nitrogen (N) and lower runoff of TOC. By contrast, soil temperatures below freezing, caused by little snow accumulation (expected in a warmer world), reduced runoff of inorganic N, TON, and TOC. Long-term monitoring data showed that reduced snowpack can cause either decreased or increased N leaching, depending on interactions with N deposition, soil temperature regime, and winter discharge. Seasonal variation in TOC was mainly climatically controlled, whereas deposition of sulfate and nitrate (NO3) explained the long-term TOC increase. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in freshwaters have increased significantly in Europe and North America, but the driving mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we test if the significant increase in TOC (total organic carbon, 90-95% DOC) in three acid- sensitive catchments in Norway of 14 to 36% between 1985 and 2003 is related to climate, hydrology, and/or acid deposition. Catchment TOC export increased between 10 and 53%, which was significant at one site only. The seasonal variation in TOC was primarily climatically controlled, while the deposition of SO4 and NO3-negatively related to TOC-explained the long-term increase in TOC. We propose increased humic charge and reduced ionic strength-both of which increase organic matter solubility-as mechanistic explanations for the statistical relation between reduced acid deposition and increased TOC. Between 1985 and 2003, ionic strength decreased significantly at all sites, while the charge density of TOC increased at two of the sites from 1-2 meq g-1 C to about 5 meq g-1 C and remained constant at the third site at 5 meq g-1 C. The solubility of organic matter is discussed in terms of the pH- dependent deprotonation of carboxylic groups and the ionic strength-dependent repulsion of organic molecules. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the O layer is important for the carbon cycling of forest soils. Here we study the role of the Oi, Oe and Oa horizons in DOC leaching from the forest floor in field manipulations carried out in a Norway spruce forest stand in southern Sweden. The manipulations involved the addition and removal of litter and the removal of Oi, Oe and Oa horizons. Our data suggest that both recent litter and humified organic matter contribute significantly to the leaching of dissolved organic matter from the O layer. An addition of litter corresponding to four times annual litterfall resulted in a 35% increase in DOC concentrations and fluxes although the specific UV absorbance remained unchanged. The removal of litterfall and the Oi horizon resulted in a decreased DOC concentration and in a significant increase in the molar UV absorptivity. The DOC concentration under the Oa horizon was not significantly different from that under the Oe horizon and there were no increase in DOC flux, but rather a decrease, from the bottom of the Oe horizon to the bottom of the Oa horizon, suggesting that there is no net release of DOC in the Oa horizon. However, significant leaching of DOC occurred from the Oa horizon when litterfall and the Oi and Oe horizons were removed. This indicates that there is both a removal of DOC from the Oi and Oe horizons and a substantial production of DOC in the Oa horizon. Quantitatively, we suggest that the Oi, Oe and Oa horizons contributed approximately 20, 30 and 50%, respectively, to the overall leaching of DOC from the O layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
