The article examines the art of ikat weaving in Orissa, India. Known locally as "bandhas," the ikat fabric is the most distinct and original form of weaving in India characterized by jagged and gentle curves achieved through the use of very fine count yarn. Historians trace the existence of Orissa ikats to the early 14th century A.D., while the art of ikat may have been practiced as early as the 12th century A.D. This report also discusses the process involved in the ikat tie and dye technique, and the features and designs incorporated in bandhas.
