This article discusses the efforts of Cincinnati Red's baseball player, Ken Griffey Jr., during the 2004 season. Ken Griffey Jr., Cincinnati's centerfielder and, for the preceding month, its cleanup hitter behind Casey, reasoned that some of the credit belonged to him. "It was a circus," Casey says of Griffey's debut season with the Reds. Despite what often looks like petulance or distance to the outsider, despite puzzling and petty incidents like last month's teapot tempest with the Marlins--Griffey appeared to glare at Florida manager Jack McKeon in the dugout, after hitting a home run following an intentional walk to Casey--Junior insists he is content. Among Griffey's comparables at the same age, according to Bill James's similarity scores index (listed on Baseball-Reference.com), are Hall of Fame outfielders (from top) Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Frank Robinson. Though he has two years and $14.6 million remaining on a contract extension he signed in 2002--a significant obligation for the cost-conscious Reds--Casey, like Ken Griffey Jr., is going nowhere, at least as long as Cincinnati continues to win.
