Smart city models are recognized as practical approaches to managing city operational challenges caused by growing urban populations. Its effectiveness has been proven by developed cities worldwide that have already embraced it and showcased their functional gains. Their leveraging of ICT infrastructure has created countless smart opportunities to enhance city lives. Investment challenges in smart city requirements may be a setback for developing cities but an incremental approach can gradually lead the way as can be seen in Oman. A number of smart areas are identified as crucial for such journey including smart economy, smart mobility, smart environment, smart citizen, smart living, and smart Government. Through a number of smart initiatives, Oman has been targeting these smart areas and pushing for ICT infrastructure enhancements that can support them. As a result, technologies have been incorporated across the economic sector, the social structure, and the environment, driving up the quality of living for the citizens. Brucellosis is a globally distributed and economically devastating zoonotic disease of multiple species, including camels. Human and livestock brucellosis is prevalent in Oman, especially in southern Dhofar governorates of Oman, where camels share habitat and have close contact with other susceptible species. We conducted a randomized crosssectional sero-epidemiological study to investigate the seroprevalence of brucellosis in camels of Oman. The sera from 2,250 camels from 552 geographically marked farms were screened through Rose Bengal plate agglutination test and later confirmed by the competitive ELISA (COMPLIZA, VLA, UK). In total, nine [0.4%, confidence interval (CI) 0.4, 0.8] camels from eight (1.5%, CI 0.6, 2.8) herds were tested positive for brucellosis. The highest prevalence was recorded in Dhofar (3.7%, CI 1.4, 7.9) and the lowest in Sharqiyah (1.3%, CI 0.0, 7.2) governorate (p = 0.052). All seropositive camels were of local breed and females. Seroprevalence was higher (0.5%, CI 0.2, 1.0) in adults (>4 yr of age) as compared with young (≤4 yr of age) camels (0.2%, CI 0.0, 0.8). The results of binary logistic regression indicated that camel herds located in south (Dhofar) [odds ratio (OR) 6.39, CI 1.01, 40.67], practice of open replacement system (OR 14.49, CI 1.83, 114.51) and with history of abortions (OR 8.01, CI 1.34, 47.77) were more likely to test positive for brucellosis. We conclude that brucellosis is endemic at a low level in camels of Oman and a control strategy based upon test-and-slaughter/inclusion of camels in the current vaccination program after carefully planned vaccine evaluation studies could be considered to control it. Contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) is an economically important and potentially fatal disease of small ruminants caused by Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae (Mccp). We designed this cross-sectional study to investigate the seroepidemiology of CCPP in the small ruminants of Oman. For this purpose, we sampled a total of 4015 small ruminants (2119 goats and 1896 sheep) from 510 flocks belonging to different governorates of Oman. A commercial competitive enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay (cELISA) was used to test the samples. Prevalence (%) along with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was calculated, and a univariable analysis was conducted to screen different risk factors. Furthermore, a binary logistic regression model was built at the animal and flocklevel (Table 3). In total, 147 (28.8%, CI 24.9, 33.0) flocks tested positive for the CCPP and the seroprevalence ranged from 10.0 to 53.8% in various governorates (p = 0.001). The prevalence was significantly (P<0.001) high in goats (28%, CI 23.8, 32.5) as compared to sheep (13.1%, CI 24.9, 33.0). At flock level; the open herds (OR 2.08, 1.33, 3.27), having a location in the coastal regions (OR 1.70, 1.14, 2.53) and flock size of more than 100 animals (OR 2.45, 1.54, 3.91) were the significant risk factors for CCPP in Oman. At the animal level; goats (OR 2.87, CI 2.17, 3.81), and small ruminants above the age of one year (OR 2.23, CI 1.38-3.59) were found more likely to acquire CCPP. We suggest that a control program based on the changes in the management system to minimize the risk factors and a possible mass vaccination should be devised to check CCPP in Oman. Abstract: Rabies was first reported in the Sultanate of Oman is 1990. We analysed passive surveillance data (444 samples) collected and reported between 2006 and 2010. During this period, between 45 and 75% of samples submitted from suspect animals were subsequently confirmed (fluorescent antibody test, histopathology and reverse transcription PCR) as rabies cases. Overall, 63% of submitted samples were confirmed as rabies cases. The spatial distribution of species-specific cases were similar (centred in north-central Oman with a northeast–southwest distribution), although fox cases had a wider distribution and an east–west orientation. Clustering of cases was detected using interpolation, local spatial autocorrelation and scan statistical analysis. Several local government areas (wilayats) in north-central Oman were identified where higher than expected numbers of laboratory-confirmed rabies cases were reported. For fox rabies, more clusters (local spatial autocorrelation analysis) and a larger clustered area (scan statistical analysis) were detected. In Oman, monthly reports of fox rabies cases were highly correlated (r SP >0.5) with reports of camel, cattle, sheep and goat rabies. The best-fitting ARIMA model included a seasonality component. Fox rabies cases reported 6 months previously best explained rabies reported cases in other animal species. Despite likely reporting bias, results suggest that rabies exists as a sylvatic cycle of transmission in Oman and an opportunity still exists to prevent establishment of dog-mediated rabies.
