The article presents a study which examines the effects of direct ammonia (NH3)-carbon dioxide (CO2) competition experiments in adult zebrafish and the impact of translational knockdowns of rhesus (Rh) proteins in larvae in Ottawa, Ontario. Adult zebrafish, Danio rerio, that were raised at the core aquatic facility of the University of Ottawa were the subject of the study. Findings of the study provide in vivo evidence for a dual function of Rh proteins as ammonia and CO2 channels, also highlighting that Rh proteins in zebrafish may be common pathways for transport of NH3 and CO2.
