During the morning (03:50:40 UTC) of 8 October 2005 a major (M w 7.6) shallow focus (26 km) earthquake struck Kashmir (Himalayan region). Its epicentre was located 10 km NNE of Muzaffarabad (USGS 2005, Magnitude 7.6 - Pakistan, available online at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/eqinthenews/2005/usdyae/). The present manuscript is an attempt to study the development of thermal anomaly in land surface temperature (LST) preceding this earthquake. Using data from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Terra satellite, the daily daytime LST images have been analysed for the correlation between LST variations and Kashmir earthquakes. An evident correlation of thermal anomaly in LST that is apparently related to pre-seismic activity has been identified. An attempt has also been made to quantify the change in LST (in °C) with reference to previous day temperature values and background data (MODIS LST data from 2000-2004). A 4-8°C rise in LST to the south of the earthquake epicentre has been observed seven days before the major event. Air temperature data from two meteorological stations (Islamabad and Srinagar) also supports the observations made through MODIS LST data. Objective: Mental health problems among older adults are becoming a growing public health concern in South Asia due to continued changes in population dynamics caused by declining fertility rates and increasing life expectancy. This scoping review aimed to explore and summarize evidence about mental health interventions and their impacts on geriatric mental health and highlight gaps and areas for future research., Methods: We searched six electronic databases and additional sources for experimental/non-experimental studies evaluating the effectiveness of geriatric mental health interventions in eight countries in the South Asia region from the date of inception of each database up to August 5, 2022. Following the preliminary screening, we extracted data from the eligible articles using a Microsoft Excel data extraction worksheet. We followed Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines for this scoping review and reported evidence adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) checklist., Results: From a total of 3432 potential articles retrieved, 19 were included in this review following pre-determined eligibility criteria. Across studies, mental health interventions can be broadly categorized into the following types- 1) traditional Yoga, Tai chi, or other meditative movements; 2) behavioral, occupational, or learning-based interventions; 3) tech-based interventions; 4) music therapy; and 5) new healthcare model. The evidence was predominantly based on India (n = 16), whereas three articles were identified from Pakistan. No article was found from six other South Asian countries. Depression and anxiety were the most frequent mental health outcomes, followed by quality of life, cognitive function, self-esteem, physical performance, and many more., Conclusion: Although limited, this review found various interventions that have varying effects on different geriatric mental health outcomes. A handful of evidence on mental health intervention in South Asia indicates a lack of acknowledgment that may develop a serious paucity of geriatric mental health practice. Objectives: To assess spending by beneficiaries of Benazir Income Support Programme on monthly food commodities, and contribution of the cash grant programme on purchase of nutritious foods., Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional survey of households enrolled in the Benazir Income Support Programme was conducted during July and August, 2013, in Matiari district of the Sindh province of Pakistan. Monthly household food expenditure on food commodities and use of the cash grant on type of food purchased was assessed through structured interviews of the beneficiaries. Results were computed in 2013 Pak rupees and converted to 2018 United States dollar. Women beneficiaries were also interviewed on decision-making regarding the use of the cash grant and on household food expenditure., Results: The survey comprised 421 households. with a mean monthly expenditure on food of Rs 7,577, r 80.73 dollars. Women made decisions on food spending in only 135(32%) households, but in 235(56%) households, women were the primary decision-makers on cash grant spending., Conclusions: Unconditional cash grant did not meaningfully translate into the purchase of nutritious foods even though it played an important role in increasing women's agency.
