Rebbachisauridae is a clade of sauropod dinosaurs whose maximum diversification and abundance are known from the Cretaceous of South America. We describe an anterior caudal vertebra, MDPA-Pv 007, from the Upper Cretaceous of Argentine Patagonia, whose characters allow it to be referred to this clade. Also, two phylogenetic analyses reinforce the referral of the new material more exclusively to Rebbachisaurinae. We analyze pneumatic structures using the first CT scans of a caudal element of a rebbachisaurid. The excellent preservation of MDPA-Pv 007, combined with CT images, allows us to document external fossae and foramina that connect to larger internal chambers, constituting unambiguous evidence of pneumaticity. The centrum of MDPA-Pv 007 is camerate, with large interconnected internal chambers; this is accompanied by a neural arch with wide and deep fossae. Caudal pneumaticity has a complex phylogenetic distribution among neosauropods. This feature may have evolved independently in diplodocoids and titanosauriforms, or it could be ancestral for Neosauropoda but secondarily lost in a few lineages. Future investigations, taking advantage of new technologies, will provide insights into the phylogenetic distribution and paleobiological implications of pneumaticity in sauropod dinosaurs and other fossil archosaurs. Brachytrachelopan is a dicraeosaurid sauropod that comes from the Jurassic of Argentine Patagonia. With the purpose to infer different palaeobiological traits (e.g., ontogenetic stage, growth dynamics, temporal correlation between morphological and anatomical parameters of maturation), we perform an osteohistological study on different postcranial elements from the holotype individual, including axial (i.e., cervical hemispinous process, dorsal ribs) and appendicular (i.e., femur) bones. The absence of a distinct external fundamental system indicates that the individual died before full body size achievement (i.e., somatic maturity). Furthermore, although not conclusive, the histological data suggest that despite its body size, which is comparable with fully grown individuals of other dicraeosaurid taxa, the individual also corresponds to a sexually immature specimen. Predominance of highly vascularised fibrolamelar with only a cyclical growth mark (CGM) in the outer cortex of the femur reveals a sustained, accelerated growth, typical feature of neosauropod dinosaurs. The external anatomy (i.e., neurocentral sutures are visible in presacral vertebrae) is consistent with histological data, since both indicate some degree of immaturity. Dorsal ribs are best elements to estimate age. The new evidence reinforces the hypothesis that mechanical forces were higher in the anterior edge of cervical hemispinous processes, although, these findings do not support the presence of horn cores or interspinous ligament system in the neck of Brachytrachelopan. A new gigantic titanosaur Bustingorrytitan shiva gen. et sp. nov. is described. The four specimens upon which this species is erected come from Neuquén Province, Argentina, from levels of the Huincul Formation (Cenomanian). Bustingorrytitan shiva gen. et sp. nov. exhibits some autapomorphic characters such as posterior dorsal vertebrae with spinodiapophyseal laminae bifurcated in two, very well developed anterior and posterior spinodiapophyseal lamina rami, which limit a deep, vertical, socket-like fossa; posterior dorsal neural arches with forked centropostzygapophyseal laminae; hyposphene in anterior caudal vertebrae; humerus with deltopectoral crest strongly expanded distally; and femur with a low longitudinal crest on the lateromedial half of the anterior face, bifurcated in two minor crests, which are directed to their respective condyles. The phylogenetic analysis performed recovers B. shiva gen. et sp. nov. as a lithostrotian, the sister taxon of Saltasauridae. The estimated body mass is 67.297 metric tons (with a standard error of ±17.228), which makes B. shiva gen. et sp. nov. one of the largest sauropods ever recorded. The record of this new sauropod corroborates the idea that gigantism (evolution of forms over the 50 metric tons) would have evolved many times within Eutitanosauria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The osteology of Pilmatueia faundezi Coria, Windholz, Ortega & Currie, 2019, a dicraeosaurid sauropod from the Lower Cretaceous of Patagonia, is reassessed from the perspective of a new specimen (MLL-Pv-010) that provides additional information on the axial skeleton and the pectoral girdle. The specimen MLL-Pv-010 is composed of three articulated anterior-middle cervical vertebrae (with their respective ribs in position and an associated fourth rib), seven dorsal vertebrae with associated dorsal ribs, a distal caudal vertebra, a left scapula and the proximal end of a right scapula. The new specimen shows features, especially in the middle cervical vertebrae, that link it to Pilmatueia faundezi. Additionally, the specimen MLL-Pv-010 shows features previously unknown for the species, such as the morphology and orientation of the bifid neural spines of the anterior and mid-cervical vertebrae. The information obtained from the specimen MLL-Pv-010 allows us to propose an expanded diagnosis of Pilmatueia faundezi. Moreover, two phylogenetic analyses focusing on South American dicraeosaurids show that Pilmatueia Coria, Windholz, Ortega & Currie, 2019 is well nested within Dicraeosauridae Huene, 1927. One of our phylogenetic hypotheses differs from previous contributions in showing South American dicraeosaurids as a monophyletic group. However, in the second hypothesis these are not recovered as a natural group. We think that it is reasonable to recover a South American dicraeosaurid clade, and that eventually it will be best supported once more evidence is recovered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sauropods, the giant long-necked dinosaurs, became the dominant group of large herbivores in terrestrial ecosystems after multiple related lineages became extinct towards the end of the Early Jurassic (190- 174 Ma). The causes and precise timing of this key faunal change, as well as the origin of eusauropods (true sauropods), have remained ambiguous mainly due to the scarce dinosaurian fossil record of this time. The terrestrial sedimentary successions of the Cañadón Asfalto Basin in central Patagonia (Argentina) document this critical interval of dinosaur evolution. Here, we report a new dinosaur with a nearly complete skull that is the oldest eusauropod known to date and provide high-precision U-Pb geochronology that constrains in time the rise of eusauropods in Patagonia. We show that eusauropod dominance was established after a massive magmatic event impacting southern Gondwana (180-184 Ma) and coincided with severe perturbations to the climate and a drastic decrease in the floral diversity characterized by the rise of conifers with small scaly leaves. Floral and faunal records from other regions suggest these were global changes that impacted the terrestrial ecosystems during the Toarcian warming event and formed part of a second-order mass extinction event. One of the diagnostic characters of dicraeosaurid sauropods is a reduction of pneumatization of dorsal and caudal vertebrae relative to their Flagellicaudata sister taxon, Diplodocidae. Here, we analyse pneumatic structures in the dicraeosaurid sauropod Pilmatueia faundezi, compare them to those of diplodocoids and report the first record of camerate chambers in a dicraeosaurid. The pneumatic structures are in a posterior cervical centrum (MLL‐Pv‐002) and consist of lateral pneumatic fossae on the centrum that communicate internally with large camerae. By contrast, Pilmatueia's dorsal and caudal vertebrae (MLL‐Pv‐005‐016) lack pneumatic fossae on the centra, which is consistent with the previously reported reduced pneumaticity in dicraeosaurids. Nevertheless, the base of the neural arch and possibly the base of the bifid neural spines of a posterior dorsal vertebra (MLL‐Pv‐005) show pneumatic internal chambers. The pneumatic features of the Pilmatueia cervical centrum and dorsal neural arch we describe indicate that the degree of pneumatization is variable within dicraeosaurids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many titanosaurian dinosaurs are known only from fragmentary remains, making comparisons between taxa difficult because they often lack overlapping skeletal elements. This problem is particularly pronounced for the exceptionally large-bodied members of this sauropod clade. Dreadnoughtus schrani is a well-preserved giant titanosaurian from the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian-Maastrichtian) Cerro Fortaleza Formation of southern Patagonia, Argentina. Numerous skeletal elements are known for Dreadnoughtus, including seven nearly complete dorsal vertebrae and a partial dorsal neural arch that collectively represent most of the dorsal sequence. Here we build on our previous preliminary description of these skeletal elements by providing a detailed assessment of their serial positional assignments, as well as comparisons of the dorsal vertebrae of Dreadnoughtus with those of other exceptionally large-bodied titanosaurians. Although the dorsal elements of Dreadnoughtus probably belong to two individuals, they exhibit substantial morphological variation that suggests that there is minimal, if any, positional overlap among them. Dreadnoughtus therefore preserves the second-most complete dorsal vertebral series known for a giant titanosaurian that has been described in detail, behind only that of Futalognkosaurus. The dorsal sequence of Dreadnoughtus provides valuable insight into serial variation along the vertebral column of these enormous sauropods. Such variation includes the variable presence of divided spinodiapophyseal laminae and associated spinodiapophyseal fossae. Given that dorsal vertebrae are the only elements that overlap between known remains of most giant titanosaurian taxa, the dorsal series of Dreadnoughtus provides a means to directly compare the morphologies of these sauropods. The dorsal vertebrae of Dreadnoughtus and Futalognkosaurus have dorsoventrally narrow transverse processes, unlike the condition in Puertasaurus. Further, Dreadnoughtus and Argentinosaurus have ventromedially inclined prezygapophyses, whereas Futalognkosaurus has almost horizontal prezygapophyses. The continued inclusion of new, well-represented skeletons of titanosaurians such as Dreadnoughtus in phylogenetic and functional morphological studies will aid in deciphering the interrelationships and paleobiology of Titanosauria. Neuquensaurusis a small-sized titanosaur from the Upper Cretaceous of Patagonia, Argentina, for which two species were recognised in the past (Neuquensaurus australisandNeuquensaurus robustus). Given that such division was only based on the relative robustness of the limb bones, the validity of the speciesN. robustushas been questioned. In this work, we studied the morphological variation of the vertebrae of this genus through geometric morphometric techniques and the description of relevant anatomical features in order to assess if there are one or more morphotypes withinNeuquensaurus. We found two distinguishable morphotypes, one belonging toN. australisand other that includes specimens assigned to bothN. australisandN. robustus. The occurrence of a posterior cervical vertebra with a particular anatomical feature (i.e. four sprl) could indicate the presence of another taxon thanN. australisin the studied sample. Although the validity of the speciesN. robustuscannot be discussed on the basis of the current data, our study supports the hypothesis of at least two different morphotypes ofNeuquensaurus(which could be related to different taxa).
