- Abstract
The nature of student college choice sets was studied. The characteristics of institutions that are assumed to be central to students' application decisions were identified, and students were grouped according to similarity in the types of institutions to which they sent their test scores. Data on 627 students were analyzed by a mode, cluster analytic procedure. The data base was created by merging the American College Testing program and the Educational Testing Service files for students matriculating in the fall of 1975. This data base includes almost 100 percent of the Pennsylvania residents who planned to attend a four-year, degree-granting institution. Two samples of students were selected based upon the socioeconomic characteristics of their residences. One group was drawn from a high socioeconomic area in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, and the second group was selected from a low socioeconomic area in northeastern Pennsylvania. The results indicate that students can be grouped according to their similarity in the types of institutions to which they sent thier test scores. The types of institutions to which students sent their test scores were substantially different according to whether the student was from a low or high socioeconomic status community. (SW)
