The Arabian Gulf (hereafter 'the Gulf') is renowned for its unique ecological characteristics and distinct marine life. It offers a diverse range of ecosystems that have adapted to the impacts posed by natural stress and human activities. Regular biomonitoring and diversity assessments are necessary to document the health of the Gulf ecosystem and to implement appropriate measures for effective conservation and management. Recently, environmental DNA (eDNA), a total pool of DNA isolated from environmental samples, has emerged as a highly effective tool for ecological studies. This review explores the opportunities, prospects, and challenges associated with employing eDNA metabarcoding in the ecological assessment and biomonitoring of the Gulf. It provides an overview of the status of the Gulf ecosystem and discusses the potential applications of eDNA metabarcoding in assessing biodiversity, monitoring invasive species, and evaluating ecosystem health. Additionally, the investigation addresses the challenges inherent in implementing this technique, considering environmental complexities, methodological intricacies, and data interpretation. Overall, this review emphasizes the immense potential of eDNA metabarcoding in advancing ecological assessment in the Gulf and calls for further research and collaboration to harness its benefits in this unique marine ecosystem. In the Arabian Gulf (called also Persian Gulf; hereafter 'the Gulf'), Jana and Karan Islands are recognized as one of the most Important Bird Areas in the region. Many migratory breeding seabirds, like the Greater Crested Tern Thalasseus bergii, White-cheeked Tern Sterna repressa and Bridled Tern Onychoprion anaethetus, depend on these islands during the breeding season. However, these aquatic wildlife species are suffering from intensified urban and industrial coastal development and various contamination events including wars and related oil spills. In this study, we used these three piscivorous top predator birds to analyse the levels of 19 trace elements (TEs; i.e. Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sr, V and Zn) in 15 muscular tissue samples from Jana and Karan Islands. PERMANOVA analysis showed no difference in contamination profile between sites nor between species probably due to their spatial and ecological proximity and therefore similar levels of exposure to TEs. Comparing these levels with existing literature, our results showed no particular concern for all elements, except for Al (maximum values recorded = 116.5 µg g−1 d.w.) and, in two samples, Ba (33.67 µg g−1 d.w.) and Pb (5.6 µg g−1 d.w.). The results can be considered as an initial step for supplementary evaluations with a larger number of samples and specified time intervals for the collection of specimens. The stomach contents of 30 male and 43 female (age < 3 years; 74–236 cm total length) juvenile great hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna mokarran (Rüppell, 1837)) obtained from commercial fisheries operating in Saudi Arabian waters of the Arabian Gulf were analyzed for the first time. After exclusion of parasites and abiotics, a total of 31 prey items, including the remains of cephalopods, fish, crustaceans, and bivalve mollusks, were identified in the stomachs of 59 great hammerheads. Based on the index of relative importance, teleosts were their main prey, and Platycephalus indicus (Linnaeus, 1758) was the most important prey at the species level. Significant age-related dietary differences were noted (F = 1.57, p = 0.026), indicating that the prey of the hammerheads aged 0–3 years shifted from Platycephalidae to Myliobatidae. Levin's niche overlap index was low (0.05–0.21), indicating that <3-year-old juvenile great hammerheads are specialized predators. The estimated trophic level was 4.40–5.01 (mean ± SD, 4.66 ± 0.45), indicating that the great hammerhead is a tertiary consumer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study, which included examination of the distribution and life history and a stock assessment of the flathead lobster (Thenus orientalis), is the first of its kind in the waters of Saudi Arabia in the Arabian Gulf, also known as the Persian Gulf. The flathead lobster is widely distributed in this region, although it is more abundant in the central and northern Arabian Gulf. Carapace lengths at 50% and 95% maturity are 59 and 65 mm for females and 58 and 71 mm for males. The fecundity of 4 berried females ranged from 26,000 to 76,000 eggs per spawning, and the fertilization rate exceeded 97%. Length-frequency data were consistent with just 2 cohorts, indicating that this species has a short life span and high growth coefficient (K=0.846 year-1). Large fishing boats (called dhows) accounted for more than 98% of the total landings. Estimates of natural mortality rates from use of generalized depletion models have high statistical precision and a magnitude compatible with short life history. In addition, abundance levels estimated with the depletion model are sufficient to support a sustainable small- scale fishery either as bycatch of shrimp trawlers or as a resource targeted with specialized gear. A targeted fishery for flathead lobster could be set during the off months of the shrimp trawl fishery (February-July), reducing interference with the reproduction cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Arabian Gulf is a natural laboratory to examine how subtropical coral reef ecosystems might change in responding to recurring heating events because of uniquely high water temperature and relatively low fish diversity. Several statistical methods were applied to long-term (30 yrs) monitoring data in the western Arabian Gulf to extract clean signals of the fish abundances, to reveal common trends in the multivariate time series, and to test for nonlinear and lagged effects of coral coverage and sea surface temperature as predictors. Data were analyzed at three taxonomic resolutions: species (29 species out of a total of 148 species, contributing to 69% of total observations), genus (24 genera, 81%), and family (19 families, 96%), to test the taxonomic sufficiency hypothesis, which asserts that there is no significant loss of information at higher taxonomic levels for detecting changes in the fish assemblages. Multivariate abundance time series can be summarized by dynamic factor models of four common trends, which were supported by time series clustering and good model fitting performances. The taxonomic sufficiency hypothesis is supported for the first two common trends, which showed similarity among the three taxonomic resolutions. The effects of changes in coral coverage on the fish community are nonlinear and significantly lagged with lags mostly of 8 yrs, while the effects of mean sea surface temperature were significant but inconclusive. The fish communities in the coral reefs of the western Arabian Gulf are degrading in general with decreasing abundance at the three taxonomic resolutions. Analyzing data at coarser taxonomic resolutions can be informative in revealing the general trends of the abundance of coral reef fish communities, at the cost of ignoring variations at finer resolutions. This study further highlights the importance of long-term and continuous monitoring of the coral reef ecosystem at the finest possible taxonomic level to fully reveal slow but crucial changes in fish communities, as well as to detect signs of communities' degradation to take timely restoration actions. Argyrops spinifer and Rhabdosargus haffara are two sympatric seabream species making important contributions to fisheries landings in the western Arabian/Persian Gulf. We identified the strengths and weaknesses in the long‐term sustainability of A. spinifer and R. haffara stocks by integrating multiple sources of data, including fisheries catch and effort statistics, life history traits, scientific trawl surveys and historical length frequency distribution. Four strengths were identified in A. spinifer: wide distribution of juveniles, positive association to the network of de facto fishing exclusion areas created by hundreds of oil‐gas facilities, early maturation and the existence of large and old individuals. A. spinifer suffers from two potential weaknesses: slow growth rate and higher exploitation pressure on the small‐sized individuals. R. haffara, on the other hand, has a strength of having a short life span and a fast growth rate, characteristics that make it robust to unfavourable conditions. R. haffara suffers from two weaknesses: the lack of association to the oil and gas facilities, and the preference for nearshore shallow waters with stronger negative anthropogenic impacts. Identified strengths and weaknesses of these two sparids provided a preliminary assessment about their long‐term sustainability, as well as a roadmap about how to develop different management strategies to meet specific objectives. Two species, Otolithes ruber and Otolithes cuvieri, are currently recognized in the sciaenid genus Otolithes. Recent findings suggest that Otolithes ruber likely has multiple genetically and morphologically distinct lineages and one of them, Otolithes sp. West Indian Ocean II group (WIO II group), has been previously identified in the Arabian Gulf. In this study, the specimens of Otolithes sp. collected from the western Arabian Gulf were examined using an integrative approach by combining mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene, morphological characteristics, and otolith-shape analyses. Three groups were found to have small within-group and large between-group genetic distance: the Otolithes sp. Western Arabian Gulf (WA) group, and the Otolithes sp. WIO II groups type A and type B. Accordingly, three primary species hypotheses were proposed. Evidence from conventional morphological comparisons, multivariate statistical analysis, geometric morphometric landmark analysis on morphological characteristics, and otolith shape analysis based on wavelet transformation all favor the hypothesis that the Otolithes sp. WA group is a distinct lineage. For this new species, the name Otolithes arabicus sp. nov. is proposed. A detailed description of Otolithes arabicus sp. nov. and a key to identifing species in the genus Otolithes are also provided. However, the primary species hypotheses for Otolithes sp. West Indian Ocean II group type A and type B cannot be fully supported because of partial congruence, which may result from recent divergence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The orange-spotted grouper Epinephelus coioides is one of the most important commercially exploited fish species in the Arabian Gulf. Studies to establish the basic biological knowledge necessary for sustainable exploitation are few and of limited spatial extent. We carry out a comparative analysis of life history traits of this sequential hermaphrodite and of trends of abundance in coral reefs, northern vs. southern Gulf. We found remarkable differences in sex proportion by length and age, rates of somatic growth, size at maturity and production of gonadic biomass, and no differences in the age composition, mode of growth, timing and duration of spawning, natural mortality rate, and trends of abundance. In the northern Gulf, the reproductive tactics could be diandric protogyny or protandric because males disappear at higher size and later age. In the southern Gulf, the strategy is protogyny, with full predominance of females in early life and full predominance of males in late life. In the northern Gulf, the orange-spotted grouper could exhibit bidirectional sex change. We suggest that fisheries policies should be versatile, consisting of regional-wide as well as local management measures, to account for local differences and regional-wide commonalities in life history traits and trends of abundance. Abstract Epinephelus areolatus and Siganus canaliculatus are two species of fisheries importance associated with vegetated habitats, which are in turn threatened by human activities such as land filling. We tested their associations with vegetated habitats in the Arabian Gulf and examined essential life history traits to infer their vulnerability to the degradation of vegetated habitats. Epinephelus areolatus is found to be more abundant at deeper offshore vegetated habitats, while S. canaliculatus has higher abundance at shallow nearshore habitats. Epinephelus areolatus exhibits a longer life span, lower growth coefficient, larger size at 50% maturity, lower natural mortality, and protogynous sexual pattern, compared to Siganus canaliculatus. Accordingly, Epinephelus areolatus is expected to be more vulnerable to habitat degradation and environmental fluctuations. Different preferences in using vegetated habitats and degrees of vulnerability to habitat degradation for these two species could be further integrated to set priorities for management and conservation plans. Information about habitats occupied by aquatic organisms while completing critical stages of their lives, called essential fish habitats, is crucial for their sustainability. In this work, we determine essential fish habitats (nursery and spawning grounds) of several fish species inhabiting Saudi territorial waters in the western Arabian Gulf using data from multiple surveys (2013–2016), geostatistics, and indicator species analysis. We built geostatistical maps of spatial distributions of juvenile and mature fish and examined the strength of association of each species to its observed nursery and spawning areas. Fish nursery areas were generally located in nearshore locations while spawning areas were located in offshore waters. The patterns of nursery and spawning grounds were highly varied among species, supporting a hypothesis of habitat-species heterogeneity: different species use different locations as nursery and spawning grounds. This information can be used as a roadmap for future evidence-based spatial planning and ecosystem-based management. • We identified the nursery grounds for 56 fish and shell fish taxa and the spawning ground for 6 fish taxa. • The patterns of using nursery and spawning grounds were highly varied among species. • This information can be used as a roadmap for future evidence-based spatial planning and ecosystem-based management.
