Objective: Lack of control over sleep may contribute to population-level sleep disturbances, yet relatively little work has explored the degree to which an individual's sense of control over their sleep may represent an important factor., Methods: Data from the Sleep and Healthy Activity Diet Environment and Socialization (SHADES) study, conducted in the Philadelphia area on a population comprising 1,007 individuals aged 22-60 years, was used. The BRief Index of Sleep Control (BRISC) was developed to quantify the degree to which an individual has control over their sleep. Reliability of the BRISC was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Convergent validity was assessed by examining age-adjusted items and total score relationships to insomnia (ISI), sleepiness (ESS), sleep quality (PSQI), and total sleep time (NHANES)., Results: After adjustment for covariates, greater control over sleep was associated with a lower PSQI score (B = -2.2, 95% CI [-2.4,-2.0], P < .0001), lower ISI score (B = -3.1, 95% CI [-3.5,-2.7], P < .0001), lower ESS score (B=-1.4, 95% CI [-1.7,-1.1], P < .0001), and more hours of sleep duration (B = 0.5, 95% CI [0.4,0.6], P < .0001). Each BRISC item was separately associated with each sleep outcome (P < .0001), although the items were not collinear with each other (all R<0.7). Thus, the BRISC instrument demonstrated high reliability and good validity., Conclusions: Control over sleep may represent an important factor in sleep health. Control over time to bed, time awake, sleep duration, and sleep quality are all related to sleep outcomes and assessment of these constructs may be useful for future sleep interventions., (Copyright © 2020 National Sleep Foundation. Objective: Insomnia and depression are closely related. However, few studies have investigated whether certain insomnia symptoms differentially relate to certain depressive symptoms. The present study aimed to examine relationship between specific types of insomnia symptoms (sleep symptoms, daytime symptoms, and perception symptoms) and specific symptoms of depression., Design: Cross-sectional, observational study data from the Sleep, Health, Activity, Diet and Environment and Social Factors (SHADES) Survey., Setting: Community-level population., Participants: A total of 1003 community-based adults aged 22-60 from the Philadelphia area., Measurements: Insomnia symptoms were represented by scores of sleep symptoms, daytime symptoms and perception symptoms, derived from the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Depression symptoms were assessed with the items of the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9)., Results: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) supported the three-factor model based on ISI data. Binary logistic regressions examined independent associations between the three insomnia symptom types and individual depression symptoms. Sleep symptoms were more strongly associated with physiological aspects of depressive symptoms (appetite symptoms, psychomotor symptoms, and suicidal ideation). The daytime symptoms, on the other hand, were significantly associated with almost all depressive symptoms, except for appetite. Moreover, daytime symptoms were exclusively related to cognitive symptoms of depression (eg, trouble concentrating). The perception symptoms were independently associated with mood symptoms, tiredness, appetite, and judgment of oneself as a failure, but not with psychomotor, cognitive and suicidal ideation symptoms., Conclusion: Daytime symptoms and perception symptoms of insomnia were more strongly associated with a full range of depressive symptoms than sleep symptoms. The sleep symptoms were mainly associated with more physiological symptoms of depression, implicating more biological mechanisms. Objective: The aim of this investigation was to assess the relationships between suicidal ideation and insomnia symptoms in Veterans misusing alcohol., Method: Data were extracted in this retrospective chart review of Veterans referred from primary care for a behavioral health evaluation (N=161) based on evidence of heavy drinking, drug use or another behavioral problem. Suicidal ideation (SI) was assessed using the Paykel questionnaire. Insomnia symptoms were assessed with standard diary questions in an interview format and pertained to sleep latency (SL), wake after sleep onset time (WASO), sleep quality (SQ), and habitual sleep duration (HSD). The relations between suicidal ideation and insomnia symptoms were assessed using ordinal regression analyses adjusted for socio-demographic, psychiatric and addiction-related variables., Results: Suicidal ideation was reported in 62 (39%) of the Veterans interviewed. In a multivariable model, only inadequate SQ was associated with suicidal ideation. Short sleepers were more likely to endorse suicidal ideation and have attempted suicide in the past year. In addition, older age, inadequate financial status, and the presence of a psychiatric disorder were also significantly associated with suicidal ideation in most of the adjusted models., Conclusion: Given their association with suicidal ideation, insomnia symptoms in Veterans misusing alcohol should prompt an assessment of underlying psychiatric and social factors., (Published by Elsevier Ltd.)
