Background: Undergraduate dental curricula and courses containing ergonomic principles are introduced to students from the very beginning of dental education. Still, dentists present a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders, which are a direct burden on quality of life, leading to early retirement from the profession. This study aimed to assess the state of students' knowledge and awareness regarding the role of ergonomics in dentistry and its practical implementation. Methods: a cross-sectional study using a predesigned self-administered questionnaire was conducted among fourth- and fifth-year dental students of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland (response rate of 69.2%). Results: A total of 94.6% of students declared a good, fair, or moderate level of knowledge of the subject, with a significant difference in favor of the fifth-year students (p = 0.008). Moreover, 76.1% of respondents showed a good or very good attitude toward ergonomics as a university curriculum subject. A total of 72.3% of respondents declared that the practical application of ergonomic rules in clinical dentistry is very important (five in a five-point scale). Women found dental ergonomics more important than men (p < 0.001). However, 79.3% of participants admitted not following basic ergonomic principles during clinical procedures. Conclusion: The research revealed a discrepancy between theoretical knowledge and awareness and the practical application of ergonomics in a clinical environment. Only by inculcating correct occupational standards and abiding by them from the commencement of dental education can consistency between theory and practice be achieved. Horses stay in different types of stables; especially during the cold season, they stay inside for most of the day. A stable is also a place where many people spend quite a lot of time either as employees who care for and train horses or as equine enthusiasts. Keeping horses in stables causes their constant exposure to high concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and molds in the air inside these facilities. The study was conducted in Udórz Stud Farm located in the southern region of Poland. It was carried out in two different types of stables: three runners and two box stables. The study continued for 2 years; samples were collected in each season of the year. The following devices were used: a six-stage Andersen-Graseby cascade impactor, the DustTrak™ II Aerosol Monitor 8530. The obtained results allowed for the conclusion that horses kept in box stables are exposed to lower concentrations of molds and yeasts than those kept in runners. Molds dominated in the stable air during humid periods—spring and autumn—while yeasts were more prominent during summer and winter. It was observed that cleaning stables reduces the morphotic elements of fungi in the air, even though it results in a higher level of particulate matter in the stable air. It should be noted that microclimate conditions were optimal for horses practically throughout the whole year. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that influence the image of banks in the Polish banking sector among members of Generation Z (Gen Zers) and assess the strength of their impact. Design/methodology/approach: The methods used to achieve this purpose included a literature review and a diagnostic survey with an original questionnaire. The study employed PAPI and CAWI techniques and targeted Gen Zers with accounts at commercial and/or cooperative banks in Poland. Findings: The study identified the determinants influencing the image of banks and assessed their impact on how Gen Zers perceive banks in Poland. The findings indicate that the factors with the greatest impact on the image of banks in the Polish banking sector are security, convenience and accessibility, and technologies and innovations. Research limitations/implications: Since the research part of the paper is based on a survey study, the findings are somewhat superficial. A significant limitation preventing these findings from being generalized globally is the scope of the study, which was conducted solely among customers of the Polish banking sector. Therefore, it would be beneficial to expand the research by conducting a qualitative study, and by including it customers of banks from other countries. Practical implications: By understanding the impact of the determinants influencing the perception of banks in the Polish banking sector among Gen Zers, those responsible for managing the bank's image will be better equipped to understand the needs and expectations of the youngest generation of banking service users. This, in turn, should lead to more effective management of the bank's image among a generation that currently makes up almost one-fourth of the Polish population. Originality/value: The paper is primarily aimed at individuals in managerial positions in commercial and cooperative banks within the Polish banking sector, as well as bank image specialists. The ranking of the determinants influencing the image of banks among Gen Zers, presented in the paper, partially fills the research gap by revealing the real needs and expectations of the youngest generation of bank customers. The largest European victimization survey of violence against women (VAW), has revealed an interesting paradox: countries with the highest gender equality indices had the highest VAW indices, while countries with low gender equality, also had low VAW indices. The country with the lowest VAW rates was Poland. This article attempts to explain this paradox. First, the results of the FRA study regarding Poland and its methodological issues are described. As these explanations may prove insufficient, it is necessary to recourse to sociological theories of VAW, together with analyses of the sociocultural roles of women, and gender relations since the communist period (1945–1989). The key question is whether the Polish variant of the patriarchy is more respectful toward women than Western European gender equality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores explicit justifications for recommendations regarding patients' continuing detention in forensic psychiatric wards. We are interested in what arguments are used in recommendations for the continuing detention of involuntarily committed patients made by assessment teams for legal proceedings. Our frequency analysis shows that assessment teams refer predominantly to arguments related to the mental state of the detainee. When recommending a change of security level, the assessment teams frequently refer to behavioural factors. However, very rarely does such argumentation appear in recommendations for continuation of detention at the same security level. Additionally, our qualitative analysis shows a very high level of certainty with which pronouncements about patients' behaviour are made, typically in the absence of any social/institutional context. Our study shows that assessment teams tend to opt for safe decisions that are unlikely to be challenged by legal proceedings and that allow them full control over the patient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Keeping horses in good condition requires providing them with living conditions that meet welfare requirements. These animals should be accommodated with suitable space, access to high nutritional fodder and water, and a suitable microclimate in their shelters. When it comes to the environment in the stables, a serious problem is created by particulate matter (PM), which consists of bacteria. PM concentration may be responsible for developing multiple lower respiratory tract diseases in horses, including allergies and recurrent airway obstruction (RAO). In turn, these ailments may lead to decreasing equine physical and mental fitness. Additionally, people who spend time in the stables are exposed to the same harmful factors. The study was conducted in Udórz Stud Farm located in the southern region of Poland. The study was carried out in 2 different types of stables: 3 runners (a type of stable where horses are housed together and occasionally linked up, e.g., for feeding or grooming) and 2 box stables. The research continued for 2 years and the samples were collected in each season. The bioaerosol samples were collected using a six-stage Andersen-Graseby cascade impactor to assess size distribution and concentrations of airborne bacteria. PM concentration was analyzed using the DustTrak™ II Aerosol Monitor 8530, while microclimate parameters were measured using the Kestrel 5000 Weather Meter. There are almost no studies concerning size distribution of airborne bacteria, individual PM fractions, and the impact of everyday handling on the changes in the bioaerosol and PM concentration. This preliminary study provided basic information on this subject. We have revealed a strong correlation between high PM and bacterial aerosol concentrations. Higher contamination levels were recorded in runners, as compared to box stables. The highest bacterial aerosol level was detected in the spring. The analysis of the fractions of the bacterial aerosol in the stables indicated the highest share of ultra-fine fraction (0.65–2.1 µm), while respirable fraction (below 4.7 µm) exceeded 75%. It was established that the concentration of the bacterial aerosol inside the stables was many times higher than outside. It depended significantly on everyday activities undertaken in the stables, like feeding or cleaning. Taking the above into account, a different cleaning system should be developed (a wet cleaning system, with the use of water) and excrement should be removed more frequently. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is interesting to observe how penal populism intersects with feminism when it comes to gender-based violence, as regards both anti-rape and domestic abuse reforms. There is a vast scholarship (Bumiller, 2008; Gottschalk, 2006; Gruber, 2007) in the US explaining how feminist activism turned to state power to demand more protection and more criminalization, and little focus on the European context. This article aims to analyse the development of what might be called feminist penal populist discourse in Spain and Poland. Whereas penal populist discourse has been conspicuous in Spain, and the authorities there ally themselves with domestic feminist groups and scholars to combat gender-based violence, Poland has never embraced the feminist agenda, despite the widespread influence and effectiveness of penal populism in that country. The article attempts to answer the general question: Why are feminist demands likely to be addressed in some countries where penal populism discourse has emerged in the political and public sphere, but not in others? The analysis demonstrates that the proclivity for penal populism and selection of topics are strongly related not only to some structural factors or political culture, but also to the historical and social context of each country. In Spain, the feminist movement was incorporated and politicized by left-wing parties into mainstream politics, whereas in Poland there was no grass-roots movement for women's liberation for a long time, and the emancipatory politics during the communist era was superficial. Background: One of the objective methods of assessing the level of cardiopulmonary capacity in overweight and obese children and adolescents is cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Aims: The purpose of present study is an evaluation of aerobic capacity in high body mass index (BMI) children and adolescents by comparing them with a normal weight control group by CPET. Methods and Procedures: The subjects were recruited from participants of the Program of Treatment for Overweight and Obese Children organized by a local pediatric rehabilitation center in Poland. Based on BMI for age and gender, two validation groups were selected: (1) a group of overweight children (n = 49) and (2) a group of obese children (n = 48). The study included also 53 normal weight participants as a reference group (REF). The study consisted of two parts: anthropometric measurements and CPET. The Godfrey protocol for CPET was applied. Outcomes and Results: In this study, obese children and adolescents showed similar absolute VO2peak values in liters per minute (1.64 L/min) compared to overweight children (1.48 L/min), but significantly higher than children with normal body weight (1.39 L/min). The obese children and adolescents presented lower VO2peak in relation to body weight (25.44 ml/kg/min) compared to their peers with normal body weight (36.5 ml/kg/min), and overweight children (29.18 ml/kg/min). Conclusion and Implications: The main finding of our study was recognition of significant differences between cardiopulmonary capacity parameters in obese children in comparison not only to normal weight peers, but to overweight, too. Predation is one of the most important factors affecting biology, ecology and behaviour of the prey. We have studied predation of the common lizard (Zootoca vivipara) by the great grey shrike (Lanius excubitor) in farmland habitats in western Poland. Shrike caches were used as a source of information about preyed lizards. Shrikes hunt significantly more adult males than females, juveniles and sub-adults; the pattern was similar over all three study years. Male lizard had longer activity time than female; therefore, they seem to be under predation pressure for a longer time during breeding season. Capture and count transect data of common lizard populations living within and outside shrike territories showed significant seasonal differences: within shrike territories, there was lower proportion of males than females; moreover, in some territories, the number of males in the lizard population was negatively correlated with the number of males impaled by shrikes. Our findings suggest that in this particular predator-prey system, shrikes may be a strong selective force for lizards' population dynamics. Male-biased predation could be caused by differences in the behaviour of adult male and female lizards, namely longer activity of males and differences in space and refuge use. To counteract the decline of farmland biodiversity in Europe, it is crucial to recognize habitats that are hot spots. Old rural settlements (e.g. villages) may be such important habitats, although these presumably biodiversity-rich habitats have received little attention. Socio-economic changes in central-eastern Europe since 1989 mean that old homesteads and farmsteads are being replaced by new ones., We investigated bird species composition, richness and abundance at three spatial scales (single rural property, village and landscape) in the farmland of Poland to test: (i) their association with age (built before vs. after 1989) and type of property (farmstead vs. homestead), (ii) their relationship with the increasing share of new homesteads at the village scale and (iii) the difference in diversity between the village environment and four other environments (open fields, forest-field ecotones, forests and towns) at the landscape scale., At the single property scale, 15 out of 33 species preferred old farmsteads, while only one species preferred new homesteads. Old properties hosted a higher number of species and individuals than new ones, and farmsteads hosted a higher number of species than homesteads., At the village scale, bird species richness and abundance were markedly negatively associated with the proportion of new homesteads. At the landscape scale, species composition differed between villages and the other environments, and villages had the highest average bird abundance., Synthesis and applications. Rural villages and old farmsteads are important habitats for many farmland birds; thus, the increasing number of new homesteads not associated with farmland production will likely lead to a substantial further decline of farmland bird numbers and biodiversity. To counteract this process, we recommend (i) implementing educational programmes to develop rural residents' awareness about the importance of farmsteads and homesteads for biodiversity, (ii) including villages and farmsteads and consideration of bird-friendly habitats within these as part of EU conservation policies and (iii) compensating for changes in the structure of rural villages by increasing the amount of similar alternative habitats in the surrounding landscape. The aim of this paper was to establish the influence of loading on the values of the CBR ratio of the ash-slag mixture and the fly ash from the "Skawina" Power Plant. The CBR ratio was determined at the loading of 22 and 44 N and without loading, both for the samples directly after compaction and after 4 days of soaking in water. The investigation was conducted to determine the usability of the wastes tested for the road engineering purposes. In terms of geotechnics, the ash-slag mixture was classified as well-graded non-swelling clayey sands, and the fly ash as well-graded swelling silts. An increase in the loading of the samples directly after compaction led an the increase in the CBR ratio of the materials tested. Whereas after 4 days of soaking in water, as a result of an increase in the moisture content, a decrease in the CBR ratio occuned, but with an increase in the loading. It increased from 26 to 35% for the ash-slag mixture and from ito 11% for the fly ash. The analysis of the usability of the fuel ashes tested for road engineering purposes makes possi- ble the statement that only the ash-slag mixture meets the requirements of the pertinent standards and can be used for erecting embankments, provided that they are built in dry places or insulated from water. Earlier research has shown (Cialdini & Schroeder, 1976) that the statement "Even a penny will help" added to a standard request for charity donation considerably increases the probability of carrying it out. The present study tested the effectiveness of this technique in various contexts in a set of 3 field experiments conducted on the streets of 2 Polish cities. The results proved, first, that success can be strengthened when combined with a dialogue in which a requester is involved prior to being asked for a donation. Second, it was shown that the dialogue itself produced more compliance than did a monologue. Third, it was demonstrated that dialogue related to the content of the requested issue may or may not result in an increase in compliance, presumably depending on the in-group/out-group focus of the dialogue's content. The purpose of the study was to assess and compare short- and long-term cardiac complications of the multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) by predominant severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants throughout the pandemic. The analysis of prospectively collected data comparing cardiac complications of MIS-C during and after hospitalization across the original/alpha, delta, and omicron waves. Cardiac complications were defined as cardiac failure with systolic function impairment or hypotension or abnormalities in echocardiographic findings (decrease in LVEF, FS, valvular insufficiency, pericardial effusion, or coronary artery abnormalities). A total of 120 patients with MIS-C admitted to the Children's Hospital of Krakow between November 1, 2020, and May 5, 2023, were included in the study (74 during original/alpha dominance, 31 delta, and 15 omicron). Patients in the omicron group were found to be younger than those in the alpha and delta groups (37 vs. 75 vs. 80 months, p = 0.03). The frequency of cardiac failure with systolic function impairment or hypotension was diagnosed more frequently in the original/alpha and delta groups than in the omicron group (44.59% vs. 41.94% vs. 13.33%, p = 0.08) also echocardiographic abnormalities changed, with rates of 60.8%, 35.5%, and 13.3% (p < 0.001) accordingly. The multivariable regression revealed an older age (OR = 1.19, 95% CI = 1.07-1.33, p = 0.002) as the only independent factors of cardiac failure with systolic function impairment or hypotension. In all patients, signs of cardiac failure resolved during the hospitalization. Moreover, in 98.3% of patients, all echocardiagraphic abnormalities resolved completely during the observation period.    Conclusion: The cardiac complications of MIS-C appeared to advance less severely in younger children during the Omicron outbreak. In long-term observation, symptoms of cardiac failure resolve completely. Similarly, also echocardiographic abnormalities normalize in the vast majority of patients. What is Known: • Knowledge about the long-term cardiac complications of MIS-C is still evolving and uncertain. • The greatest concern of MIS-C is cardiac complications, including cardiac failure and coronary artery dilatation. What is New: • Long-term observations revealed complete resolution of cardiac complications in the vast majority of patients with MIS-C, irrespective of the dominant variant. • Cardiac complications of MIS-C were less common in younger children during subsequent pandemic waves in our patient population., (© 2024. The aim of this research is, what students in secondary school think of alcohol consumption, and estimating the social extent of drinking among the surveyed youth. Therefore, I used the questionnaire consisting of 9 questions. Feedback was collected by means of a sectional research on 122 secondary school students in the 1st grade (68 girls, 54 boys). The results analysis revealed unequivocally that the problem of alcohol consumption among youth exists. 83 percent of respondents claimed that they have already tried alcohol, whereas 50 percent of them admitted to drinking on recurrent basis. This fact signifies the need to undertake preventive actions which would be held in schools since the early-schooling age. They should take into account the following aspects: the family norms and attitudes towards drinking, and the level of students and their relatives' alcohol addiction.
